About Barnes....

Quote :
"He'd have to REALLY REALLY want to coach in the ACC and have another shot at UNC on a consistent basis. I just don't see it happening."

im pretty sure he does REALLY REALLY want to coach in the ACC and in particular NC State. I mean the guy apparently has a clause in his contract that says NC State and UNC would not have to buy out his contract if he was ever offered a job here or there.

it seems like there would be a REASON for having a clause like that in his contract...

so he's got to be at least SOMEWHAT interested...

i've heard a lot of people throw it around lately

but i'd like to see how the fuck you people know what's in rick barnes contract

edit: i didn't realize you said UNC

you lose all credibility

POINT: Barnes would never say he wants to stay at or leave Texas until he has heard all offers. It's just smart negotiation.

POINT: Texas is not a better program than NC State. They have money, but State has higher attendance figures, better fan support, better facilities, better tradition, better conference etc. Remember Rick Barnes IS Texas. Texas is nothing without him.

rick barnes has an ego. To feed that huge ego of his, he could come to Raleigh and become a legend, if he can bring back the NC State glory. If the money is right, why would he not want to do it? He grew up a State fan, his wife is from here, he is from Hickory, apparently he has a house in Wrightsville Beach.....just makes too much sense to me. I hope kruk is right. This would be MONUMENTAL for our program if we can get this guy.

Some history about Barnes and UNC for the people who dont know/remember:

Quote :
"
Clemson's Foul Ball

January 29, 1998

As you’ve already heard, Rick Barnes’ Clemson squad came into the Dean Dome Wednesday and fouled everything in site, losing 88-79. A record 41 fouls were called on Clemson players, fouling out Miller, Jamison, Iterbe, Woni, Wideman, Allensbach, and Buckner. That left Clemson with only four eligible players to play against Carolina’s five, what the NHL commonly calls a "power-play".

With 59 foul shots one has to wonder why this wasn’t a blow out. Most might think it was the Tar Heels’ inefficiency at the charity stripe, but UNC ended the night with 69% free throw shooting, only 2 percentage points less than their season average. No, the real reason this wasn’t a blow out of the 20-point variety was rebounding. Clemson outrebounded UNC 33-28, a small raw margin, but they got 12 more possessions in the game than the Heels did; a stark reminder of these Heels’ rebounding inabilities.

Clemson did a good job of attacking UNC’s defense. Several times they spread UNC’s overplay man-to-man defense out and took players like Ademola Okulaja and Ed Cota one-on-one. When UNC went to a 2-3 zone, however, in the second half, all that stopped and the Tigers were left to bad three-point attempts.

Oddly, Barnes reiterated his case that he didn’t prepare his team differently. While he truly sounded sincere, I still have a hard time believing that. Why was it that, all of a sudden in the season, every time Antawn Jamison touched the ball in the first half he got fouled? Why was nearly every easy UNC shot opportunity was met with a wincing blow from Clemson. Nope, I just don’t believe him. Every season the Tigers go into at least one game with Carolina and make uncharacteristically hard and numerous fouls. If anyone needs to be talking to anyone in Greensboro, it should be Barnes about why his team consistently plays rough-tough against the Heels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dick Vitale said it last night, and I’ll second him: this kind of play is not good for basketball. It isn’t good for the ACC, either, and we should all think about that one a little longer.

UNC WINS CLEMSON CONFRONTATION THE GAME FEATURED THREE TECHNICALS AND AN ARGUMENT BETWEEN COACHES.
The hard feelings evident early in North Carolina's first-round ACC tournament game with Clemson on Friday boiled over into a confrontation between coaches that generated more sparks than any of the night's basketball.

Elbows, shoves and bodies on the floor were prevalent, as in the previous two games between the teams, during North Carolina's ponderous 78-62 victory over the outmanned, undersized Tigers. But with 3:10 left to play and the Tar Heels ahead, 69-53, Dean Smith and Clemson's Rick Barnes went nose-to-nose in front of the scorer's table in a heated verbal altercation.

At issue was a foul delivered against North Carolina's Jerry Stackhouse by Iker Iturbe as Stackhouse drove for a layup, and Smith's reaction to the foul.

Though the harshness of foul did not appear much out of the ordinary, Smith rose from the bench and pointed repeatedly at Iturbe while saying something to him. Barnes, angry that Smith would address one of his players, called timeout and asked referee Frank Scagliotta to bring Smith to the scorer's table.

Smith walked toward Clemson's bench and Barnes met him halfway, barking all the while at Smith. Smith answered and the exchange grew more heated as Barnes, like a manager arguing with an umpire, tried to inch around Scagliotta to get closer to Smith.

Scagliotta finally separated the coaches - Barnes was hit with a technical, Smith was not - but order was hardly restored. Stackhouse was slapped with a technical with 1:44 to play for pushing Bill Harder into North Carolina's bench during a scrap for a rebound. And at the buzzer, as Donald Williams missed an alley-oop dunk, Harder bumped Williams' legs and was accosted by North Carolina's Pat Sullivan and Shammond Williams.

No punches were thrown. But later Friday, it was learned that ACC commissioner Gene Corrigan and supervisor of officials Fred Barakat were reviewing tapes of the incident and that it was possible an unidentified Tar Heel would be suspended for today's semifinal against Maryland. ``I don't know what Dean wants us to do,'' said Barnes, who also met with Corrigan and Barakat after the game but would not comment about their conversation. ``(Stackhouse) is going in for a layup, our help side was right where it needed to be. In that situation, you either step in and take a charge or try to block it, and Iturbe did that. Once he did that, I looked down and Dean's pointing at him, talking to him. I don't think that should happen.''

When he met Smith at halfcourt, ``I simply said to him, `You coach your team, I'll coach my team. You don't have the right to talk to my players,' '' said Barnes, who was ejected from the first meeting between the teams.

In his interview session, Smith, who has been troubled all season by Clemson's physical play, apologized for addressing Iturbe.

``I'm sorry these things occur,'' Smith said. ``Where I was wrong was to yell at Iturbe, point my finger at him. I've done that on three occasions in my coaching career, and I'm never happy about it. But in each case, it's always (because) I don't want one of my players to be hurt needlessly.''

Smith admitted he expects physical play from Iturbe, a Spaniard. But he stopped short of calling Iturbe a dirty player, saying only that Iturbe ``does things much the same as they do in European basketball,'' which is known for rough play.

``I didn't (call Iturbe dirty) and you're not going to get me to say it,'' Smith said.

What about his 1-11 record vs UNC?

I don't want a coach who wants to fight UNC, I want a coach who can beat UNC.. If Barnes can do that then so be it, if not... well....

What coaches that we actually want DO have a good record against Roy and K? Are there any?

I dont think so.

There is a reason Carolina and Duke are elite schools- because they rarely lose.

He was at Clemson then. Clemson is a different beast than NC State. He will do better here than at Clemson, and possibly better than Texas with a little time.

how the hell do you figure that? thats completely opossite of what he said on both points. he said that he didnt want to come to the acc, was mad at our fans for attacking herb, and would not consider a move to state.
