There's a huge difference between a fan of the opposing team and a troll. Boobs was trolling for fun, but maximus and mshaul were just spouting bullshit, both pre- and post-loss. 6/3/2006 6:09:12 PM |

If we play like we played the last two periods of game 6 and all of game 7 in the Buffalo series, we will not lose.
but
I had a dream that Cam Ward gave up an "own goal" sorta cause he cleared the puck backwards into the net and gave up another goal right after the face-off...and I was really really pissed.
dont ask why I just posted that, but its true. 6/4/2006 8:48:15 AM |

Staal's has like 3 younger brothers... all of which are pretty damn good.
Marc was drafted last year by the rangers somewhere early in the 1st round... but hasn't yet made the jump to the NHL yet. Only Staal that plays on defense. He'll end up on the Rangers roster eventually... but he probably wont ever be a star. nevermind on that. He will be a high scoring defenseman... but wont be great on the defensive end unless he bulks up. By not being a star... I meant compared to his brothers, all of which are pretty much at the top of their classes and will be top scoring line centers.
Jordan Staal is in this years draft... and a likely top 5 pick. He's definitely behind Erik Johnson, who right now is the clear number 1 player in his class... but he could go anywhere between 2 and 6. We probably will see 3 Staals in the NHL next season, as Marc will probably make the jump, and Jordan is likely to be an instant impact rookie.
Many think that the youngest of the borthers, Jared Staal, will end up being the best... but a lot can happen between now and when he's drafted... he's not even 16 yet... Will be in the OHL next year.

There's nothing out of the ordinary about a defenseman not going straight to the show. Even four to five seasons is considered normal. 6/4/2006 3:28:08 PM |

well... yes. 4-5 seasons is quite long for anybody taken top 15... but sometimes happens... especially on clubs with depth. It's a lot harder to make the transition from juniors to the NHL at defense then offense.
My point about Marc not being on the level of his brother is more on their draft status and potential... Eric was the 2nd pick in his draft... 1st skater taken... and always considered a future franchise player, Jordan is a likely top 5 pick... probably 3rd or 4th pick... not on Eric's level, but still considered one of the best in his class... and Jared is considered a future top 2 pick... maybe even the top of his class... while Marc was selected quite later then his brothers were or are predicted... (pick 12)... and many were surprised he even went that high. He definitely didn't have the hype that his brothers have.6/4/2006 3:42:01 PM |

You also need to realize that Marc was in an incredibly deep draft class. 6/4/2006 3:53:54 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Yeah, but regardless of talent, defensemen are never going to get the draft hype that forwards do. There's perhaps one defenseman in every class with the ability to jump straight to the show, and he gets all the hype that might be spread amongst 3-4 NA forwards. In previous years it was JJ and Cam Barker...in 2003 it was a muddle of Suter, Coburn, and Phaneuf, and it just so happened that Dion's got the size and composure to dominate first.
Defensemen who are taken in the top 15 are seen as projected top four guys at the very worst. Same goes for goaltenders taken in the first round and starting potential. This is an odd discussion to put in perspective because all of the Staals are so good; Marc could potentionally be the worst of the four in the league and still be an all-star way down the line. 6/4/2006 4:03:44 PM |

yes... Certainly deeper then this years... but I'd say Eric's was deeper. 2003 had kids taken in the 3rd round that would've been late 1st round picks any other year... and 4 or 5 guys that could've gone 1st overall. I'm not sure how Jared's class stacks up.... that's too far away.

you're right... being a defenseman or goalie right away puts one at a disadvantage because the transition is so much harder... thus you see many more forwards taken earlier... and in that sense it's a bit unfair for me to even make a comparison between the brothers and Marc. Eric, Jordan, and Jared will in all likelyness make their clubs NHL roster right away... be top 5 picks each... and make an impact within their first 3-4 seasons. While Marc is already held back 1 year and may still be a year or two away from even seeing skating time in the bigs as a 12th pick.
