heck if they came in and just gave us an ACC Championship or strong NCAA run, then bolted to the NBA, i wouldn't care. anything to get more recognition to NC State. heck it'd probably say something about Lowe on his recruiting and coaching to make them NBA ready in say 2 years. i'd hope they would come back and eventually get their degree though, as that is the primary goal of this university. it would probably do a great deal of good for the State bball program, and we'd probably end up with some great players to come here in the years after.7/8/2006 2:55:37 AM |

Was about to post the same thing.
Leaving in a few years is a good thing. It'll prove that we have a coach that can develop talent and put lots of players in the league. (Which is what recruits usually want).7/8/2006 11:17:39 AM |

i read an article in the paper about how North Carolina was losing homegrown basketball talent and other places were putting out more talent. Chris Paul was the last N.C All-American, which is pretty recent, but think of the other names that were from N.C...
Tommy Burleson David Thompson Michael Jordan Phil Ford...

N.C. holds its own against the highly populated NY and Cali just fine. i'd say we're one of the best especially considering the population disadvantage to those two. 7/8/2006 6:50:34 PM |

N&O Article on the Nike Camp
Quote : | "Having the staff in place even before Lowe officially started earning a paycheck helped State land small forward Johnny Thomas just weeks after Thomas put on a breakout all-tournament performance at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in the Triangle over the Memorial Day weekend.
Lowe, like the rest of the NCAA Division I men's basketball coaches, wasn't allowed to comment on Thomas or any other players State has been recruiting this weekend.
But State is in the mix for several other high-profile players from of the Class of 2007. One key figure State hoped to land this weekend at the Reebok ABCD Camp in Teaneck, N.J., was Anthony McClain, a highly regarded center.
Before that, at Nike, Lowe had a chance to watch both of the point guards State has been pursuing -- Chris Wright, who originally had chosen State then changed his mind when Sendek left, and Jamelle McMillan, son of former Pack star and current NBA coach Nate McMillan.
At one point on Friday, Lowe sat along the baseline conferring with Harris, Sendek's former assistant, while Sendek stood 20 feet away along the sideline of the same court watching the same group of players.
Recruiting is a competitive business and that's why Lowe is scheduled to spend 22 of 31 days this month on the road flagging the players he thinks will fit into his system.
"My feeling is that it's an even playing field," Lowe said about recruiting. "You watch and take the good and utilize it yourself. But, if you want a kid, you have to get in there and battle. You have to work harder than they work. My thing is I'm going to do what I have to do to get a kid, bottom line short of doing something illegal. You've got to hustle. And if the kid has to see your face every time he looks up, then I'll be right there."" |

he may be the new kid on the block, but he's at least getting his name out there, and in good fashion too. in a perfect world i would have ESPN cover the first game in UVA's John Paul Jones Arena, and Lowe's first game as head coach. the games would both have a good story, and even if both UVA and NCSU were drubbing some weak teams, it would be good to cover just b/c of how excited the fans in the arenas would be. i want Dick Vitale to come here, not b/c i particulary like him, but b/c it would most likely mean a nationally televised primetime game, and it would be that much sweeter for all the world to hear Dicky V finally slob someone's knob besides K and Roy. 7/10/2006 5:43:50 PM |

I think the wright to state news is bogus. He recently updated his profile and put Pittsburg at number 2 on his list which bumps us down to 5. Also, he said he was still planning on visiting more schools so it doesn't make sense that he would have committed already. Hope he does come to state but I'm not getting my hopes up yet. 7/10/2006 7:15:40 PM |

^ If you're referring to the schools he's listing, we are #5. They are in alphabetical order by interest level. (We're the 3rd in Alphabetical order with "Medium" interest).
Those "interest levels" are completely bogus for the most part. They're rarely updated and aren't usually correct unless the guy comes out and proclaims he has a clear leader.

sendek vs lowe for McMillan
http://www.newsobserver.com/122/story/459422.html
Quote : | "Recruit in midst of Pack NCSU, old coach vie for McMillan
INDIANAPOLIS - Jamelle McMillan is stuck in the middle of a basketball recruiting battle that has Wolfpack written all over it.
McMillan, son of former N.C. State great and current Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, is being recruited by both the Pack and Herb Sendek's new school, Arizona State.
Insert wicked cackle here.
McMillan, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of O'Dea High in Seattle, represents the first major recruiting fight between State's new coach, Sidney Lowe, and its old one. Sendek left State after 10 years in April.
If that weren't entertaining enough, McMillan's recruiting story took on another twist when his father was mentioned as a candidate to replace Sendek before Lowe was hired.
McMillan, who participated in the Nike All-America camp last week, said his father never seriously considered the idea of coaching at his alma mater because he never completed his degree at State. The college job required a college degree.
McMillan, who said his dad planned to finish his diploma once his NBA coaching career was over, admitted that the situation entertained the family for a few weeks this spring.
"It was basically laughs," Jamelle MacMillan said about hearing from family back in North Carolina about the State coaching search. "We got a big kick out of it. It was definitely an interesting situation."
At that time McMillan had already received a scholarship offer from State. When Sendek left, State athletics director Lee Fowler called Nate McMillan to tell him the scholarship offer was still good regardless of who would become the next coach.
Lowe has been in contact with Jamelle McMillan since officially taking over at State.
After Sendek arrived in Tempe, Ariz., he offered McMillan a scholarship to play for the Sun Devils. McMillan also has received scholarship offers from Stanford, Clemson and Georgia Tech.
Need another wrinkle? Lowe and Sendek have a history with State's other point guard target, Chris Wright of St. John's College High in Washington D.C.
Wright, the 18th-best prospect in the 2007 class as ranked by Scout.com, had committed to play at N.C. State before Sendek left for Arizona State. Lowe is still pursuing Wright for the Wolfpack.
With disappointment lingering over Wright's rejection of State and Wright's interest in Georgetown growing, Wolfpack fans are doing what they can to convince McMillan to choose their school.
McMillan said he has been hearing from State fans -- he isn't sure how they got his e-mail address -- for months. They all want to know if he's still interested in State. His answer is yes. In fact, when McMillan saw Lowe watching him at the Nike camp, it eased his mind.
"They definitely kept their promise so it's pretty exciting," said McMillan, who is ranked 98th by Scout.com.
McMillan, who averaged 13 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists as a junior at O'Dea, said he would be a good fit at either school, playing a controlled offense like Sendek's, or the up-tempo game Lowe has promised at State.
McMillan knows both. He plays a ball-control style at O'Dea for former NBA player Phil Lumpkin. He also plays a wide-open style with the West coast powerhouse AAU club Friends of Hoop coached by Jim Marsh, another former NBA player.
Sendek would seem to have an edge, even after changing jobs, since McMillan has attended camps at State since kindergarten, most with Sendek in charge.
McMillan speaks warmly of Sendek, but the McMillan family has a house near the State campus. McMillan knows the area, the school and the atmosphere at State as well as anyone.
Whoever snags McMillan will get a kid with a firm grasp on reality. Asked what he thought his weaknesses are as a player, McMillan launched into a succinct summary about creating his own shot off the dribble and not settling only for 3-pointers, about being a soft-spoken person who needed to be more vocal while playing the point.
McMillan said he also must finish with more authority off the fast break and even offered that he had been blocked eight or nine times on the break by strong, athletic types at Nike camp.
"I'm doing more," McMillan said of his play at Nike. "Hopefully everyone sees that here."
He knows which college coaches are watching." |

yeah definitely. the kid's a legacy here. pluses for us: father played here, family has house here, the McMillans have family here, has been to a ton of bball camps since he was a kid, nate and sid are friends, plenty of playing time, etc. negatives for us: he currently lives in Seattle and might like to go to school at UDub with some of his hs classmates, it is Sid's first year so he might want to be coached by someone more established in the college game, etc.
isn't Nate's jersey honored in the rafters?

For some reason I feel very very good about right.
Name a bigtime program in a top conference that you have absolutely no competition at your position. NC State is about the only program who could say that.
McMillan is being recruited as a SG as I understand it. Wright would start from day 1 and play a whole heckuvalot if he lives up to half of his billing.7/13/2006 6:56:14 PM |
