OEP: forests and deserts? food for the journey?
Dude its a ONE DAY trip by FOOT. And Lebanon may be pretty hot, but it's no hotter than the deep south here (which is much more humid), and most of souther lebanon is freaking farmland. There is no shortage of water to be found, scavenged or whatever else.
All a person NEEDS to walk from one end of the country to the other alive is a satchel of food and a few gallons of drinking water. I'm not saying it's easy, but you'd seriously have to be a fool to not leave. Bombs wizzing overhead? Dude the israelis have been doing targeted air strikes.
And I garaun-fucking-tee you, if they spotted a herd of people walking the other way, they would not be dropping ordinance anywhere near them.

look. there comes a point when each family in the danger area has to make their own risk assessment. are they going to feel safer hunkering down in their home and praying that hezbollah doesnt set up a rocket launcher next to their home or that israel doesn't accidentally bomb them.
or are they going to feel safer strapping whatever it is they can carry on their backs and fleeing on foot, exposed, through the war zone for who knows how long.
it's a difficult decision to make to be sure. and it's unfortunate that in this case, these people's choice turned out to be a poor one.
but if a group of refugees trying to walk to safety was blown up by an arandt israeli missile, each and every one of you would be asking "WHY WERE THOSE DUMBASSES WALKING AROUND IN A WARZONE?!"

No I wouldn't. I would say "that sucks, they were trying to evacuate"
And now that I find out that these kids were handicapped, I withdraw my "why didn't they GTFO" approach. They were awaiting evacuation (it should have happened sooner, but what are you gonna do?)
Now, I feel bad that they died in a terrible accident. I don't blame Israel though, because I'm not a wacko that thinks they were aiming at the children. They should investigate why the bombs missed, and in the future, they should try to improve bombing accuracy. The actual blame should be placed on Hezbollah, because they are using civilian targets as rocket-launching sites for the sheer fact that every time Israel tries to stop them, there is collateral damage and hippies all over the world lament at Israel's "genocide."
And for those of you still talking about the UN observers...they were 10 fucking feet away from the rocket-launchers. Why the fuck didn't they move out of the way? You know that's the target, MOVE!
Even some of our best precision-bombs aren't accurate under 10 feet.7/31/2006 7:56:42 AM |

teh j00-controlled media has released teh cover-up story --
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3283816,00.html
Quote : | "IDF: Qana building fell hours after strike Hanan Greenberg
VIDEO - An IDF investigation has found that the building in Qana struck by the Air Force fell around eight hours after being hit by the IDF. "The attack on the structure in the Qana village took place between midnight and one in the morning. The gap between the timing of the collapse of the building and the time of the strike on it is unclear," Brigadier General Amir Eshel, Head of the Air Force Headquarters told journalists at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv, following the incidents at Qana. Eshel and the head of the IDF's Operational Branch, Major General Gadi Eisnkot said the structure was not being attacked when it collapsed, at around 8:00 in the morning.
The IDF believes that Hizbullah explosives in the building were behind the explosion that caused the collapse. Another possibility is that the rickety building remained standing for a few hours, but eventually collapsed. "It could be that inside the building, things that could eventually cause an explosion were being housed, things that we could not blow up in the attack, and maybe remained there, Brigadier General Eshel said.
"I'm saying this very carefully, because at this time I don't have a clue as to what the explanation could be for this gap," he added. Meanwhile in Lebanon it is being reported that the number of those killed in the collapse of the structure climbed to 60.
All targets struck accurately Eshel said that an additional attack took place at 7:30 in the morning, but added that other buildings were targeted. "This was an attack on three buildings 460 meters away from the structure we are talking about. Four bombs were dropped and all of them are documented by the planes' cameras. They all struck their targets. In addition, we carried out a filming sortie that photographed the village during the afternoon showing that the three targeted buildings we struck. We have verification of strikes on the building and that the bombs reached their targets," Eshel said.
"An attack that took place at two in the morning struck two targets, both of them 400 meters away from the building (that collapsed). They were also destroyed. The attack between 12 and 1 a.m. struck the area of the affected house, and there were accurate strikes on the target. We are asking the question – what happened between 1 in the morning and 8 in the morning… we understand this building was attacked between 12 and 1 in the morning, seven hours before it was seriously damaged," he said. Brigadier General Eshel explained that "since the start of fighting in Lebanon 150 rockets from a very high number of rocket launchers have been fired from the village and its surrounding areas, at a number of sites in the State of Israel. Within the village itself we have located a diverse range of activities connected to firing of rockets, beginning from forces commanding this operation – because such an operation needs ongoing command to direct it – and logistical sites that serve this end." "From this village rockets are fired almost every day across Israel. The operation carried out overnight is an extension of operations that didn't start last night but before, and during this night we struck a number of targets in the village. All of the targets are being meticulously sifted," Eshel added." |

My eyes are very open thanks.
1) How many, when and where? 2) How many, when and where? 3) How many, when and where?
I'm not saying they didn't happen, and yes I have been listening to the BBC and watching non-US television (because that's the only coverage there is of the actual events it seems). But I take all the BBC and Arab video with a BIG grain of salt. There's as much a war of propaganda as there is on the ground. I mean, we already have REAL reports coming out showing fake ambulance runs, faked burn victims, faked deaths, tons of bogus death reports among others.
And if you take the time to piece together where the strikes have hit, it's hardly "rockets whizzing overhead". The destruction has been very largely localized and VERY targeted.

1) Bullshit. I ran a marathon, and I am hardly in peak physical condition. Any non-obese, non-elderly person can walk 30-40 miles in a day, especially under duress. With kids it would be more difficult, but again there are plenty of means of manual transport.
2) You walk to northeastern Lebanon, outside of the strike zones. people forget that nearly half the country is not being targeted at all.7/31/2006 10:29:53 AM |

July 30, 2006 12:00am
THIS is the picture that damns Hezbollah. It is one of several, smuggled from behind Lebanon's battle lines, showing that Hezbollah is waging war amid suburbia.
The images, obtained exclusively by the Sunday Herald Sun, show Hezbollah using high-density residential areas as launch pads for rockets and heavy-calibre weapons.
Dressed in civilian clothing so they can quickly disappear, the militants carrying automatic assault rifles and ride in on trucks mounted with cannon.
The photographs, from the Christian area of Wadi Chahrour in the east of Beirut, were taken by a visiting journalist and smuggled out by a friend.
They emerged as:
US President George Bush called for an international force to be sent to Lebanon.
ISRAEL called up another 30,000 reserve troops.
THE UN's humanitarian chief Jan Egeland called for a three-day truce to evacuate civilians and transport food and water into cut-off areas.
US SECRETARY of State Condoleezza Rice returned to the Middle East to push a UN resolution aimed at ending the 18-day war, and:
A PALESTINIAN militant group said it had kidnapped, killed and burned an Israeli settler in the West Bank.
The images include one of a group of men and youths preparing to fire an anti-aircraft gun metres from an apartment block with sheets hanging out on a balcony to dry.
Others show a militant with AK47 rifle guarding no-go zones after Israeli blitzes.
Another depicts the remnants of a Hezbollah Katyusha rocket in the middle of a residential block blown up in an Israeli air attack.
The Melbourne man who smuggled the shots out of Beirut and did not wish to be named said he was less than 400m from the block when it was obliterated.
"Hezbollah came in to launch their rockets, then within minutes the area was blasted by Israeli jets," he said.
"Until the Hezbollah fighters arrived, it had not been touched by the Israelis. Then it was totally devastated.
"It was carnage. Two innocent people died in that incident, but it was so lucky it was not more."
The release of the images comes as Hezbollah faces criticism for allegedly using innocent civilians as "human shields".
Mr Egeland blasted Hezbollah as "cowards" for operating among civilians.
"When I was in Lebanon, in the Hezbollah heartland, I said Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending in among women and children," he said." | 7/31/2006 10:50:24 AM |

i've done 15 (or was it 20? i don't remember) miles in a day at a brisk pace with a 100 lb ruck and a machine gun, up and down hills, and with a little asian female Marine who was struggling hanging onto my pack for several of those miles (so i could help her up the hills).
in terms of time, we would've easily had time to go 30 miles in a day. it would've sucked, but even with all of that gear, i could've done it (and so could all but a few of us, i'm sure).
if it was necessary to preserve the safety of my family and me, i would've even think twice about it (although I probably wouldn't carry so much stuff if i knew i had to go 30 miles).

i'm just saying that walking 30 miles in a day isn't as colossal of a task as some of you seem to think. your body can do some incredible things--much more than you'd ever imagine if you've never physically pushed yourself...not to mention that it's amazing what you can do when you have to.
i mean, i've seen a 97 pound, 4'11" girl go 15-20 miles with prob 75 lbs of gear (a few of the rest of us carried some of her stuff for her) and a rifle, and at a pretty brisk pace. she was hurting by the end, but she could've gone 30 miles no prob if we'd stopped and taken a break for a couple of hours (which we easily could've done if we'd had all day to go 30 miles). AND THAT WAS CARRYING NEARLY HER OWN BODYWEIGHT...AND NOT UNDER THE THREAT OF POTENTIAL DEATH IF SHE DIDN'T MAKE IT.
yes, taking kids that far would be tougher, but you'd better believe that we'd have blistered feet before i let my family get blown up.

^^^well, i mean, i've pushed and tested my body in a number of different ways. you've done a marathon (and an eating contest, and i don't know what else...haha).
if you've never proved to yourself how far you can push your body, 30 miles sounds like a long-ass way. it sounds like an insurmountable obstacle. if you know better, then it's not. i wouldn't really look forward to a 30 mile hike, but i would step off having zero doubts of my ability to get it done, and that makes all the difference in the world.
physical conditioning is a player, for sure, but by far the bigger factor governing the ability to walk 30 miles is in your mind (and like i said, it's amazing what you can do when you have to).

For those of you who say these people should immediately leave their homes because they saw a newspaper article saying Isreal was bombing military targets in their part of the country, please consider:
Consider the possibility (and by possibility, I mean actual reality for a majority of the world's population), that its not a matter of the physical task of leaving. Its a matter of deserting your home, your livelyhood, things that hold nearly as much worth to you as your own life (a concept foreign to the safe and wealthy people of America). Maybe to these people, the risk to their lives without their homes is equal to or greater than the risk they take by staying to protect them from soldiers/looters/warfare/etc.
Furthermore, realize that such people rarely ever stray far from their hometown. 30 miles might be the farthest they've ever traveled in their lives.
Do you still think they are entirely absurd for staying? 7/31/2006 2:25:07 PM |

The end result here is choosing to live or choosing to die. I'm rather material but if raleigh was about to be nuked tomorrow, I'd grab a coat, some water in a container, whatever small foods I could back in a backpack and maybe some extra clothes. Being the material person I am I might even take my laptop with me. All in all I would be taking a back pack worth of stuff with me. Encumbered as such, most people should be able to manage at least 2 miles an hour walking. 30 miles means 15 hours.
