I'm going to be cross-training indoors today because of the weather, hopefully all this will clear up by the weekend and we can get back outside 8/31/2006 1:43:34 PM |

Quick question for other runners. I have to get my long run in tomorrow, but it's probably going to rain. Any tips for running in the rain? 8/31/2006 2:47:36 PM |

No I mean... would putting some kind of plastic between my socks and the shoes be a good idea to prevent blisters or would that be bad because your sweat couldn't evaporate? Is it better to try and run with some kind of jacket on or just get soaked? I've run shorter distances in the rain, but I think I need more planning for this type of thing. 8/31/2006 3:03:17 PM |

my best advice is to get another pair of shoes to do rainy runs. You will ruin shoes quick in wet conditions. Also get good non-cotton running socks, otherwise you will destroy your skin with a quickness.
Definitely wear a wind breaker esque jacket to keep yourself as dry as possible up top, and a hat and clear sunglasses if you have em

Don't do anything with plastic. I just go with my normal socks and tennis shoes, although Noen's advice is probably the best answer.
I just kind of run through it, unless it's really pouring down and/or there's lightning (in which case I'll just find something else to do). A drizzle is actually quite nice at times.

Oh yeah, cotton shirts can sometimes cause some chafing and bleeding in the rain, so you might want to try polyester. Other than that, running in a drizzle or light shower in the summer is really nice. 8/31/2006 3:16:23 PM |

^yea definitely use some bodyglide on the nipples or they are gonna get bloody after 7-8 miles 8/31/2006 3:17:45 PM |

^^^ I'm doing a 19 mile run, so I've already taken your advice.
Yeah I have socks that wick away moisture, same for the shirt. I guess thats the best I can do. Bodyglide doesn't seem to hold up too well after the 2.5 hour mark from what I've seen.

yea, you can always carry the little stick with you, or put some shavings in a little baggy to reapply when you start to feel the chaffing set back in 8/31/2006 3:32:41 PM |

Ok, I am going to be in Caryfor the weekend visiting my parents. I have to do a 21 mile run for my marathon training. Does anyone know of a good long distance course? I trained for a half marathon around Lake Johnson, but 4 laps was pretty repetative (the route I did was about 3 miles, I don't think I want to do 7 laps). Is there a bigger route around Lake Johnson, maybe in the 7-8 mile range? I think 3 laps wouldn't get too boring. 9/6/2006 2:11:46 PM |

You could do Godbold Park --> Black Creek --> Upmstead --> Reedy Creek --> Museum/Meredith
It's about 14 miles (one way), so turn around and you'll be done around Lake Crabtree when Black Creek meets Upmstead. 9/6/2006 7:51:39 PM |
