^^ the CC companies OBVIOUSLY don't care enough to check.

in other words, i wouldn't worry about it. I don't think it will ever exist anywhere but in the CC issuer's database. So your secret is safe, until someone inevitably leaks all of that CC company's database via a stolen laptop or something.

I'm beginning to think that what I might do is sign up for a card that doesn't offer rewards (or at least not good ones), but gives me a gracious period of no interest so I can buy a few things and pay them off with no rush. Then I will probably get a BP card to get my gas rebates and pay that one off everymonth.

I jumped on this American Airlines Mastercard a couple months ago that gave me 25K free miles after spending $250. I thought cool, I can just get some more miles and fly to europe for free.

Then I realized how hard it is to get miles. So you get 1 mile per dollar spent, and to get to Europe I need 40k-60k miles (depending on low or high season). Thats a bunch of damn money i have to spend on that card to get that ticket.

i guess its still cool since i have a free ticket, and theres no annual fee for a year...but i had got my hopes up on flying to europe soon for free

^easy solution:

close the card, wait a couple weeks, then re-apply!

I know, you'll get hit with an annual fee. But if you call them up and bitch, they will usually waive it. Or you can always just cancel the card again when the miles hit your accoutn.

I'm up to 125,000 free United miles this way.

OMG EVERY PIECE OF INFORMATION RELATED TO CREDIT CARDS AND CREDIT IN GENERAL IS CONTAINED IN THAT MAGICAL LINK!!!

or i could just say that the conversation you link to concentrates on airline credit cards, not credit cards in general.

i prefer the first response tho

ntm, i dont think digging through a 12 page conversation that I wasn't a part of to be the best way for me to learn about this complicated topic.

'best card' for me is the Starwood AmEx.

great bonuses for sign up (up to 10,000 free points), incredible flexibility for rewards (you can get gift cards, airline miles on ANY airline, free nights @ hotels, even cash I believe), Domestic airline ticket is only 20,000 points (they throw in 5,000 free points whenever you transfer 20k to an airline)...

plus, the card has warranty extension, theft + loss insurance, and BVG (price-matching for 90 days) built in.

only drawback: $30 annual fee. I usually don't go for cards with fees, but to me this one is well worth it. As a side note, I've had the card for 2 years and have yet to be charged the annual fee. So you might be able to slip through the cracks too. Also, if you do get charged, people sometimes call in + bitch and either get the fee waived or get bonus points.

and AmEx is one of the better CC companies out there.

I've been told to get a card for business use. What card to most of you have for business purchases only? (That includes any charge on a customer visit aka food, gas, hotel, airline, etc)

right now I have a personal citi platinum select...basically the first card I got just so I could build some credit. I only use it for online purchases right now.

Well, my green card if off of my dad's account, but it is paid on time, and since the card is in my name, it improves my credit. they sent me an offer in the mail that was like "since you have been a faithful AmEx customer for 3 years blah blah blah please accept our invitation", so I signed up for it...I guess it was pre-approved since they sent me the form and everything in the mail, and it's the first AmEx offer I've gotten...tons of Visa and MC ones though. Does it hurt your credit if you apply and are rejected?

"just so you know, Dividend card is going away.

If you apply now, you will probably get the letter telling you so a week after you receive your card. They have been sending these letters to card owners starting about a week ago. It says the new benefits will begin 2nd week in Oct.

They are moving it to 2% for "everyday" purchases, but are adding utilities + some other category to try and make up for it.

Makes the card pretty worthless, imho."

I really liked my Dividend Select card until they announced the change to 2%. I wrote them a few emails telling them my dismay at them changing the rules, but they gave me the typical "we added more categories" bullshit. Needless to say I will be cancelling it at the end of October and looking into a new rewards card. Fuck Citi Cards.

Crap.... I love the Citicard. But really it is'nt that much difference in money. If they keep the $300 cash back limit per year, that means you would have to spend $15,000 a year on your credit card to make the grand total. Before you only had to spend $6000.

That sucks (especially if you are still a student and don't spend that much money) but, I think I'll still end up getting the maximum amount back at the end of the year.

I just got a discover platinum gas card, 5% cash back on gas purchases seems like a great idea now that gas costs $texas, $8K credit limit, and 0% for 12months on purchases and balance transfers, plus a 10.99% rate after 12-months

The Citi mtvU is an awesome card, that basicaly offers you 5% back (in the form of ThankYou points, which can be redeemed for gift cards, miles, or a REFUND on your tuition bill) on restaurants (this includes bars), movies + rentals, BOOKSTORES (includes Amazon.com), and record stores. I've had the card for about a year and have already gotten over $200 worth of gift certificates.

The requirements to get accepted are pretty lax, considering it's a card for students (I don't think they even ask about income on the application). Some extra details:

• 0.0% APR on Cash Advances for 6 mos.

• Earn up to 2,000 ThankYouSM Points twice a year for having a good GPA

• 25 points per month when you pay on time and don’t go over your credit limit

• 5 points per dollar spent at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters, and video rental stores*

• 1 point for every dollar you spend on all other purchases

• Earn up to 75,000 ThankYou Points® per calendar year

• Redeem for gift cards, merchandise, travel and more with ThankYou Redemptions Network®

• 10% discount at mtvshop.mtv.com and the MTV Store in New York City

if you are interested in applying for it (you should!), please PM me with your e-mail address. I am trying to get referrals for even more gift cards. Thanks!

^^ Let me rephrase, I meant they suggest I get one so I separate my business and personal use.

How belivable are the reviews on creditcard.com ? They have a comparison between all types of cards, and the top reward card seems to be "Citi Diamond Preferred", but I haven't heard anyone mention that one

Due to changes in circumstances, I estimate I'm going to put 60k-70k miles on my car in the next two years. Thats roughly 600 miles per week, or 1.5 fillups per week. I would like a gas card that I can get rewards off of and will pay off every month. Haven't look especially hard ... but immediate thoughts / suggestions?

^BP was doing a 10% trial period which then switches to 5% at the end of the trial period.

Plus, free gas cards the first time you use the card and then one after a few months (70 dollars in all)

Chase Freedom is pretty good. 3% on gas, groceries (covers ALL purchases at some Wal-Mart Supercenters), and fast food, and 1% on everything else. Let your cash back build up to $200, and get $250 back. Plus, everywhere takes Visa.

The wachovia visa has a relatively low limit that I use everyday in leu of a Check Card for security reasons.

The Amex Platinum gives me reward points and access to American Express travel benefits and a card that has no effective limit. Now, I can't buy a yacht with it, obviously, but if I buy a TV, Fridge and furniture in one weekend I'm not going to have my card immediately shut off or rejected.

They also offer pay-over-time options for big purchases but the APR on that isn't optimal.

It just goes well with my overall purchasing scheme: Keep big stuff on one card, small stuff on another. That way I don't get completely beasted by having a specialty card for every store with their own rules and temptations.

Delta AmEx Platinum - besides the redic miles I can rack up, I also get no-blackout, no restriction companion tickets.

The only cash I use is to charge up my card for the Home Depot cafeteria or for parking when going out. Figure I get anywhere between 2500 and 4000 miles a month easy just from purchases.

it is safe to say that most people reading this won't get the benefit of a frequent flyer card due to needing 25,000+ points/miles for a typical domestic round trip flight - unless you either spend everything on your credit card or get reimbursed for purchases most people won't put enough purchases in a year on a card to even get 2 round trip tickets

I do recommend one though instead of a cash back type card if you spend over 2500/mo on a credit card due to there usually not being a low limit to the miles earned but for that purpose the starwood card is better than any other airline's card

I rarely pass 1K on my card each month. I'm looking to make a one time large purchase, hence why I want cash back.
