I don't know if I like where this new season's story arc is heading. With all the whispers of this being Braff's last season it definitely seems like they're setting up for it. I mean now we're going to go through probably several episodes of drama concerning whether or not JD will move to Washington..

^^ no, they are showing the episode from last season (the best IMO) "My Lunch". its the one when doctor cox loses all 3 of his transplant patients and then quits.

she accepted a private practice job. why she's still hanging around sacred heart i do not know. obviously the real reason is they didn't want to get rid of her character

private practice docs can still have admitting priviledges. my only thought is that she is there for when a patient from her practice has to go have something more serious done at the hospital and they want their own doctor

it bothers me that JD acts like a selfish asshole

like before he was screwing up and making innocent mistakes and it was funny

but now he's just an asshole

only real complaint for this season

I used smarmy once while making a peanut butter-marshmellow sandwich.

Back to Scrubs...I do think JD's character has gotten a little off. However the new episode is def. one of the better ones of the new season.

maybe they are intentionally changing JD's character so that people won't see it as a big loss if or when he leaves the show at the end of the season

Best episode of the season by far. When JD is on the back of the Mercedes and runs back, that was classic.

I've been trying to pinpoint why this season seems different than all previous ones and I think, like has posted before, they seem to be distancing JD from being the focal point of the show. To me, one of the most fundamental elements of the show has been his relationship w/ Cox but they haven't progressed it at all this season. In addition, I always enjoyed his feuds w/ Janitor, who seems to have pursued other people to torment. Cox and Kelso rarely interact, which was very important early on. And, does JD still narrate the show? I haven't gone back through to check but it seems like it's just taking a fly-on-the-wall approach instead of how the story used to be told (through JD and ,occasionally, through the other main characters). Also, what was the point of Cox and JD having new kids? Turk and Carla made sense, Cox maybe (doesn't really add anything), but it's just really wierd for JD to be in this situation. I fear the show may be winding down, which is tough as it's been my favorite.

meh, not so sure. it was ok - i could have used some more variety in the songs. There were too many ensemble broadway showtunes. The Turk & Carla one was great though.

i hate to be that guy who makes somewhat arbitrary comparisons to other similar but nonrelated topics.... but I can't see a TV musical without comparing it to Buffy's Once More With Feeling. That's the pinnacle of musical TV shows right there, and making comparisons, this Scrubs just didn't hold a candle to Once More. Granted, Buffy was an hour long show, which they extended to 52 minutes of air-time just for tihs episode (instead of the normal 42 for hour shows), so they had a lot more to work with. But it made much better use of its characters and their strengths and really got a huge variety of music and dance. Also, since Buffy is purely fanciful anyway, they had a lot more leeway in how/why people where singing and dancing, while Scrubs had to make sure the sick woman was in the area each time they broke into song.

And WTF - it wasn't in HD? that's bullshit - musicals are one of the formats that should be making the most out of widescreen formats (once again, see Buffy - that single episode of the entire 7 seasons was filmed in widescreen and shown letterboxed)

Id agree that OMWF was better, but I think it was mostly that it was longer...they wanted to do so much with this musical but only had 22 minutes to do it in...the ratio of song to not-song was way out of whack. Spread this episode over an hour and give it more dialogue scenes and its much better. That being said, "Everything Comes Down to Poo" and "Guy Love" were some great Scrubs moments .

^This show has always been SD, save for last seasons finale, which was an "experiment" according to the producers, and they didnt like the results (no idea why, but thats whats been said). The last 4 seasons of Buffy were shot wide, so it wasnt a big change other than deciding not to go 4:3 safe for the musical.

^^ oh, yeah. now that i look back at last week's episode on DVR, it was in SD. I guess it just really stood out here, but my wife tells me I complain about that every week.

And on my dvd sets, buffy isn't in widescreen except for OMWF. Angel is, starting with season 2 (or 3?)

^ yeah, the Simpsons one's are usually pretty good. Or maybe i'm just thinking about the Monorail one, which was spectacular, of course. It helps that I was in The Music Man play as a kid, which the vast majority of people who continuously quote that episode don't realize it was a direct parody of.

the songs were pretty weak until Dr. Cox's big song, then they got a little better, but as others have said, as far as musical episodes go, Buffy puts everything else to shame.

They were shot wide, but they were framed for 4:3. I have the R2 DVD box and they are indeed anamorphic widescreen, but occasionally you see mics and what not you shouldnt see, but Im usually engrossed in the show enough to not notice. I have no idea if they ever aired wide in the US or not.

Did The Simpsons ever do a fullout musical? I thought they just did musical numbers on occasion, which is pretty much a staple of any animated show (Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad are all full of them), but never an episode that was mostly song and dance.

yeah they did, the mary poppins episode, the evita episode and the one where it was more of a clip show and they went back and reviewed all the songs they'd done on the show before. it was the episode where bart and homer rented that movie "paint the wagon red" with clint eastwood remember?
