i dont' really see blu-ray as something only hardcore videofiles want.
i really don't consider myself a hardcore videophile at all. but dvd quality really doesn't cut it these days. and the prospect of getting a next-gen dvd player + game system for ps3's price isn't too out of the question.
caveat: if blu-ray doesn't last as a format, i wouldn't really consider the ps3 (that's the main reason i probably won't buy one for a while - if at all) 10/10/2006 8:49:07 PM |

I work at Best Buy and that's not a day I'm looking foward to coming into to work. I'm predicting atleast a trampling. If I'm able to get my hands on one, it's hitting ebay with the quickness. Some european kid is gonna be willing to give his left nut to be one of the only kids is his respective country with one.
Once all is said and done I forsee the Wii coming out on top, followed by PS3 and XBOX360 with third. When all those people who couldn't/wouldn't get a PS3 start looking for a second choice, it's probably gonna be a Wii. It may not have the developer backing like the others but it's equilibrium point is gonna be considerably higher. 10/10/2006 9:08:39 PM |

I have a feeling something is going to go down on this ebay thing, like maybe Sony getting up wth ebay and telling them not to allow it or something. Could get nasty. just a feeling I have.
That said, there will be a whole lot more PS3s on Ebay than xbox 360s went on ebay because I swear over half the people that got preorders are just going to sell them. The price is going to be a lot less than they expect on ebay due to this high supply. I swear, there will be over 100,000 PS3s up on ebay come November 17th. 10/11/2006 10:31:44 AM |

^high supply? 400,000 consoles shipped...if everyone on ebay sets high reserves, then people bidding will have no choice as what to pay for them 10/11/2006 10:34:56 AM |

i think his point is that you can only skim so much of the market. if everyone prices their ps3 at 1500 bux but only 50k people want it for that much, then those other 150k (assuming half went to ebay) are SOL and have to lower their prices (not to mention eat up auction costs from the first go round).
everyone has caught on to the trend, prices will feel downward pressure because of the ebay supply, not the supply in general.
[Edited on October 11, 2006 at 10:55 AM. Reason : probably slower downward until after xmas like 360's.] 10/11/2006 10:53:00 AM |

I agree about ebay PS3 prices plummeting on the 17th
People expecting $2k+ are probably a bit out of line. I think they might sell for double, but not much more. I got an Xbox 360 (waited in front of a Target in the freezing cold for 3 hours before opening, grrr) and made $300, but didn't get the memo about the PS3 pre-order so I'm probably out of the eBay game this go-round.
Still, people figured out eBay was the hot ticket w/ the 360, thus 50%+ (I'd guess) of pre-orders will end up on eBay, DRASTICALLY dropping prices. 10/11/2006 10:19:29 PM |

Why the ? This is a good thing. You'll still be able to sell your PS3 at stupidly high markups the second you get your hands on it. They're just not allowing people to sell something that they may or may not get. All this move will do is cut down on the scammers. Anyone with a legit PS3 sale won't be affected by this in the slightest.

you'd be a fool to sell your PS3 (preorder) now anyway, considering you have to ship w/in 7 days of the auction's end to be elligible for Paypal's seller protection policy.
personally, I will probably wait until right before Christmas to unload the rest of mine. mmmmmm I can smell the desperation already!

Going by last years 360 experience here's what I would suggest. Do internet research beforehand. Last year I knew exactly how many 360 were delivered to each store about a week before they went on sale. As it turned out the Target in Cary got more units than any other store in the area. I'm not saying it will be the same this time around, but like I said, you will probably know the numbers if you check the internet/call around/make friends with a store employee. The best buy/circuit city numbers were leaked on the internet, I called around to Walmarts, and I went by and made friends with this cute girl that worked at Target and got her to spill those numbers to me. Basically just find the store that has the most units, show up at least 12 hours before they open, bring a warm coat, a rain jacket, lots of entertainment and snacks and wait it out.
If you really want one on Launch day.
edit for other tips:
I'd really recommend staying away from Best Buy, and to a lesser extent Wal-mart. That's where everyone thinks to go. Last year at the Cary BB there was a line bigger than the amount of 360s at 8pm. and that was for a 10am store opening. Whereas at Target, I got there at 10pm and was only 12th in line for a store that had 48 units and a 8am store opening. You could have shown up at Target at 7:45 and got in line and got a (core) 360. I saw it happen. I got my 360 and was out of the store before 8:30. That was 90 minutes before Best Buy opened, and I "only" had to stand in line for 10 hours. Truth be told, I could have showed up at 5am and still gotten a Premium 360, but I had no way of knowing that. Just do a little research, be smart, and try to avoid doing what the masses do. Check availability in places like BJs too. You never know. Last year they got 6 360s, and somehow I doubt they had 6 people waiting in line the night before. I'd also think about getting away from the Cary/Raleigh area. College towns are going to get more PS3s but they are also gonna have a LOT more people wanting them. Maybe a 45 minute drive to Burlington wouldn't be a horrible idea. Think outside the box and be willing to stand in line, those are my two best pieces of advice.

i stumbled across a report that had said best buy bought 200,000 of the 400,000 because theyre like trying to be the launch kings. on top of that, if every eb/gamestop got 8-10 ps3s, that leaves very little for other stores...i wouldnt be suprised if best buy did buy half the launch shipments... 10/17/2006 10:10:30 AM |

Sony shows off PlayStation 3, new games
By MAY WONG, AP Technology Writer Thu Oct 19, 9:47 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - As the countdown to its Nov. 17 U.S. launch neared, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). showed off its PlayStation 3 game console Thursday and named 22 titles that will be available at the same time.
The games at launch will run the genre gamut, from racing and war games to updated, more powerful versions of popular sports titles — "the most robust game lineup" of any new-generation game system, boasted Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Sony's own in-house developed titles, such as a first-person shooting game called "Resistance: Fall of Man" will be $59.99.
Other games that will be available for download directly onto the PS3 will be priced at $14.99 or less, Sony officials said.
Prices of certain accessories also were disclosed: $50 for an extra wireless controller; $15 for a memory card adapter; and $25 for a remote control for the system's built-in Blu-ray disc drive player.
The console is already the most expensive among the new generation of game systems with a price tag of $500 or $600, depending on the model, but analysts say Sony's dominance in the video game market still will dictate its success.
Sony has sold 106 million PlayStation systems globally, including 40 million of them in the U.S., while Nintendo Co. has sold roughly 21 million GameCubes, and Microsoft Corp. has sold about 23 million Xbox systems, said P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research.
"At the end of the day, Sony still has tremendous brand loyalty here, and they'll sell millions," he said.
Sony officials were equally optimistic.
"We've always had formidable competition," Jack Tretton, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an interview.
Introducing a product this time as a market leader seems less daunting than the challenge he faced when helping to launch the first PlayStation against the then-industry kings, Nintendo and Sega, Tretton said.

Kinda makes me wonder what those $14.99 games will be. My guess is that they will not be new games, but rather classic arcade games. Kind padding their release titles with stuff like Tetris and Frogger. I think I remember MS doing this also.

I wonder if they will go down the same path as MS. You have to have the $25 remote before the DVD player will work. They must be, because I don't know why you couldn't control the thing with a standard controller.10/20/2006 8:25:41 AM |
