State was chosen third overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 1986 draft. He was a big man who was comfortable playing small forward, power forward or center. He could bang in the paint, but he had a good shot and preferred to play use his ball handling to blow past opponents. He appeared to have the perfect combination of size, strength and agility. The first player taken in what’s been called the cursed draft of 1986 was Brad Daugherty. Next was Len Bias, who was chosen No. 2 by the Boston Celtics and then died from a cocaine overdose while celebrating his good fortune. Chris Washburn was picked third. Less than three years later he had been banned from the NBA for life. Cocaine addiction was the force that derailed Washburn’s career. But problems had started to surface long before. Washburn played varsity basketball at Hickory High as a 6 foot 9 inch tall freshman and averaged 21 points a game. As a sophomore the game started to come easy and he started averaging 26 points a game. It was about that time that his grades plummeted. He transferred to a private school in Virginia called Fork Union Military Academy. He played on the team for one year before signing his letter of intent for N.C. State. Feeling the fallout following the decision to snub the nearby University of Virginia, Washburn transferred to The Laurinburg Institute in his home state where he played his final year of high school basketball. On both teams, Washburn had played on the schools’ “post grad” basketball teams where he went up against community college teams. “When I came out, I was the No. 1 high school player in the country,” Washburn said. In his freshman year at N.C. State, Washburn pulled what he calls a practical joke. Police called it theft. He took a football player’s stereo. When his coaches and the police confronted him about it he lied, even though the stereo was in the trunk of his car. Washburn said the police caught him at the scene of the crime when he was coming out after having replaced the stereo. They were not amused. He was arrested and sentenced to 46 hours of jail time and probation. His coach, Jim Valvano, benched him for the final 10 games of his freshman season. “I was always a big kid. I wanted to be loved and liked by everybody,” Washburn said. “What I took as a joke wasn’t funny to everybody else.” Losing what he loved woke him up, temporarily. “My sophomore year I was hungry for it so I played like a wild man,” Washburn recalls. That year he averaged 17.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. When he heard that he was virtually assured to be a top five pick if he entered the NBA draft, he jumped at the chance. Philadelphia had the first pick and let him know he was their top choice. Then they traded their pick to Cleveland and Washburn went to The Golden State Warriors in Oakland, Calif. “If I had it to do over again, I would have stayed in school just a little bit longer and learned what it was like to be the leader of a team,” Washburn said. “At that point I didn’t have anybody to tell me no. I surrounded myself with nothing but yes folks and they told me yes until the money ran out.” He butted heads with his coach, George Karl and racked up big fines for being late to practice and games. “That was my first time ever being a millionaire – I didn’t know how to do it,” Washburn said. Everything was new. He didn’t know things that many people take for granted. Once, a teammate told him he’d left the lights on in his new Mercedes. “He said, ‘Didn’t you hear that dinging?’ and I said ‘Yeah, but I never had a new car before. I didn’t know what it meant,’” Washburn remembered. After his first NBA season, Washburn was traded to the Atlanta Hawks where he played with Dominique Wilkins and his N.C. State teammate Spud Webb. Washburn spent his time smoking crack and freebasing. After his third failed drug test, he was banned from the NBA for life. “I was only on the court for 2½ years because of my drug issues,” Washburn said. “After that, I went overseas for another nine years.” He played in Switzerland, Greece and Argentina before being traded to a Colombian team. Colombia was a bad fit for a man with a taste for cocaine. Washburn met the coach once and never showed up for a practice or a game. Washburn estimates that he went through rehab more than a dozen times, but he never took it seriously. Sometimes he went to rehab in lieu of jail. Other times he went because his newest basketball contract required it. “I knew when I was in there that I was just going to use again when I got out,” Washburn said. He went to prison from 1994 to 1996 for possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia. The guards knew who he was and mocked him for squandering his talents and winding up in jail. He was in Houston when he hit bottom. Washburn said early in his career, he signed over his power of attorney to his first agent who made off with about $600,000 of Washburn’s NBA contract money. His second agent saw the extent of Washburn’s money and drug problems and suggested Washburn sign over power of attorney to his mother so that he wouldn’t fritter away his fortune. He agreed and gave his mother control of his finances. He was living in Houston. Some days, Washburn would call his mother in the morning and ask her to wire him $1,000. Then he’d call her at night, asking for another $1,000. When she caught on that her son had a drug problem, she cut him off and refused to give him any more money. “She told me to put my name and address on a piece of paper in my pocket so the police could identify me when they found my dead body somewhere,” Washburn said. Without access to his money, Washburn stopped paying his bills and became homeless. “I had the money but the only person I was paying was my crack dealer and I was making him rich,” he said. “I ate out of trash cans. I panhandled. I went into stores and I boosted. I lived that way for about two years.” In 2000, at the age of 34, Washburn decided enough was enough. “I matured. I finally got older. I got tired of asking people for $5 or $10,” he said. “I was tired of being broke. It seemed like overnight I lost the taste for drugs – I lost the obsession.” He’d quit many times before, but this time it stuck. “A lot of folks forget that I made my mistakes at 20, 25, 30 years old and I’m 45 now – I’m a new man,” Washburn said. He faces up to the shame of his past and tries to use his knowledge to help others starting where he is. He coached youth leagues when he lived in Texas. Now he gives speeches to school and church groups. During the summer he goes on tour with the NBA and talks to the top 100 draft picks as part of the league’s Rookie Transition Program. He tells the newly rich young men about the dangers and temptations they’re about to face. He points to his own failures in the hope that they’ll avoid his mistakes. “I tell these kids about all these things that will try to separate them from their money,” Washburn said. He warns them about the great players on his teams who are enjoying their wealth in retirement. He tells them about the fact that he wasted his fortune and now he has to work for a living. “My NBA contract and bonus money is long gone,” he said. “But I live on my NBA retirement and pension fund.” He coaches young, gifted players and tries to keep them grounded and realistic. When Washburn sees a good player with a hard head and a big ego, he tries to reach them. “If I see a good player who’s only shooting with one hand, I’ll tell him, ‘Somebody’s out there playing with two hands while you’re sitting here playing a video game,’” he said. Basketball still has a special place in Washburn’s heart. “I’d be the first to tell you that it’s the best job you’ll ever have,” he said. “Sports only takes up one or two hours a day; it’s about what you’re going to do with the rest of that day.” "

I used to play basketball. I clearly know what I'm talking about. I didn't pay attention to what I put as the caption as I never looked at my photos that closely. It was 35 on the shot clock and 37.5 left in the game. Simple overlook as I quickly put up those pictures...................years ago. I was a student back then in 2004, and that's probably when I put up that picture.
