Great movie.

Question with a SPOILER ALERT

For those who saw it already, did several people in the theatre cheer like they did in mine when the servant broke free and fileted the Captain?

nah nobody cheered in my theater, which was surprising because they were making a huge amount of noise before the movie started.

Great movie, I didn't really know much about it going in other than I thought it was some sort of fantasy film. Really liked it though, sad ending.

I saw it tonight, and it was different than I expected, but much much better. I loved the mix of reality and fantasy and Mercedes is totally the (wo)man.

Saw it Saturday. Thought it was good, but wasn't what I expected. I thought there'd be more fantasy.

Oh, and I had no idea it was in subtitles beforehand

i do think it was a bit misleading on their part to not advertise it as a subtitled movie. im sure that would bother a lot of people.

It was kinda funny b/c before me and one of my roommates picked a movie I said I wanted to see "Volver". He was like, eh I don't feel like reading subtitles today.

I dont know that i saw any advertisment at all but in theater previews. It was nominated for best foreign film so i took that as a hint that it was in spanish.

That annoys the crap out of me. For some reason, dubbed versions loose something in the language that actually contributes to the movie.

i've never seen a foreign film that was released in the states and advertised as a foreign film. the only one i can remember seeing dubbed in theater was spirited away, and that was because it was a re-release.

It's a good movie, but it's a tad overrated I think.

I liked the story though, and it made me wonder what other freaky cool fairy tales are out there that we don't ever hear about.

^^ it wasn't real, she was imagining everything.

^ She had to climb down to get into the monster's lair. I guess she thought she had to go back up to get to her room.

the magic world was real. pan needed a child and impregnated the mother with the root under her bed. the only fake world was at the very end where she imagined she got to meet her "real" parents. she was just a real girl doing the tasks for the evil pan.

DUH!

so i watched it all with the directors/writers commentary and....

the "imaginary" world is all real. all of it. even the ending.
according to Del Toro, and his word is basically final.

^ That may be his word, but the fact is, there's nothing in the story that anchors it to the fantasy world. All the fantasy elements can be interpreted as the girl's imagination without affecting the real-world plot.

Of course, you could also argue that all the "real-world" elements are a dream or part of her imagination and the fantasy is 100% real. We're really not given any information to confirm that one world (fantasy or real) trumps the other, except for the fact that the vast majority of the movie takes place in the "real" world.

^that's exactly how I enterpreted it while watching...

but he says that, for example, at the end of the movie the tree (that used to be dead because of the giant frog monster in it) begins to bloom again, and that to him, is evidence to suggest that it only happened because she actually did rid the tree of said frog monster...

I for one thought there was more evidence to suggest that all the fantasy stuff was exactly that, her fantasy, whether she was sleeping or daydreaming, or just had an over active imagination

His words were that since she escaped from her room and had the chalk (where the heck did she get it from) it was real, especially since the captain saw it and picked it up. When she's talking to Pan he doesn't see it but it's explained as not being in his head.

Also, I love the part where del Toro starts going all horsehater.blogspot.com out of nowhere in the commentary.

or when he called that actor that played the doctor some fucked up shit because he looked at the camera...

something like, "then this god damn motherfucker fucked up the shot and looked at the camera as he walked away"

one of the best movies I've seen in a while, interpret it however you wish but the
images and acting were outstanding. There is just something powerful about a sad
ending, like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or compare to Stranger Than Fiction. I mean I liked the
ending to Stranger Than Fiction but I bet it could have been better if it took the more tragic route.
