^guy at the game tonight said there were recruiting violations (on other players) at Iowa State that lead to their coach being fired. If your coach is fired for that reason, you're allowed to transfer anywhere without penalty. Problem is that it will be too late by the time they convict his old coach of anything.

Also, his coach was fired for that reason, and the kid red-shirted under that same coach. NCAA could potentially show sympathy since he will only get 3 years of eligibility after basically wasting his redshirt year under a shitty coach.

First scenario is more likely, but it probably wont happen in time.

I think that our basketball team will be easier for me to watch this year. I'll miss being good/decent, but for once I'll be able to sit down and watch a game without wondering, "Will our team blow a lead to an inferior squad and give another game away?" The losses won't seem as bad this year because there will be many games we are expected to lose, and fewer chances to blow games we shouldn't. Lowe expectations.

So do we have ANY realistic chance of playing past the ACC tournament play-in round?

V packpride is absolutely still infatuated with anything to do with the Valvano era. Herb was trying to ruin that according to them. So they wanted it changed. I'm not even joking.

why is it a big deal to have the names on the jerseys?

i like the names off the jerseys (and i imagine they'll still be off for the away jerseys)

its to encourge a 'team' identity rather than personal identity

I really like the new jersies......more classic looking imo, and the shorts are actually shorts, not capri pants like last year

i hate the jerseys they wore last night, the numbers were just above their ass and their names were in the middle of their back, it looked like somebody had just stretched the back of their jerseys out

Regarding Degand's situation, when is the potiential "sympathy" from the NCAA supposed to be decided?

I think those jerseys are just interim until the regular season starts, stop complaining about them...

Also, I guess costner's the next great # 33 for the wolfpack, does he jump to the nba this year or next? haha.

Its a red-white game and to me has no bearing on the season. This team won't be beaten by a lack of talent, it'll be beaten by a lack of chemistry. If everyone gells and starts to play their asses off then we'll be fine.

text from the article
Quote :
"RALEIGH - Sidney Lowe strolled onto the Reynolds Coliseum court Wednesday night, basking briefly in the same warm applause that earmarked his days as the point guard on N.C. State's 1983 national title team.

He was glad to be back in the storied arena, to see "red and white," to revel in the atmosphere. Still, though the touch of nostalgia was nice, his focus is to raise the Pack men's basketball program to that of its treasured past.

It's a steep mountain to climb, a colossal challenge. But Lowe said his team that's picked to finish last in the ACC "did a pretty good job" in its first public display before about 5,000 loyal and curious fans.

They saw Courtney Fells flash for 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and watched Ben McCauley toil hard in the paint for 20 points in a double-feature intrasquad night that also spotlighted the women's team.

Missing was guard Engin Atsur, who is sidelined with a sore Achilles tendon.

"I just wanted to rest him for a few days,'' Lowe said. "He's had [the problem] the last few years. He's very important to us. We need everybody."

The Pack exhibited a different style of play, a quicker pace, as Lowe had promised.

The uniforms had an added touch as well -- the players' names stitched on the back once again.

Lowe watched the two 20-minute halves from the scorers' table, wearing neither smile nor smirk as Fells showed some flair, as Gavin Grant (15 points) displayed creativity and McCauley flashed a few nifty post moves.

If the season opened tonight, Atsur, Fells, Grant, McCauley and Brandon Costner would likely make up the starting lineup.

Depth is an issue, but freshman Dennis Horner showed promise with an 11-point performance and court savvy.

"He's such an intelligent player, a smart player, reads plays,'' Lowe said.

Fells enthralled the crowd in the first half with a high-wire dunk on a well-aimed lob by Grant, then made an assortment of other shots.

It's what the Pack needs from the rangy wing player when the real games begin.

"I was very pleased with him and that's what I expect from him,'' Lowe said. "He has the athleticism and ability to do a lot."

McCauley provided some inside presence, and got a verbal pat on the back from Lowe for a few spin moves and deft interior passes. He also sank two pressure free throws in the second half with the score tied and time running out.

"We feel very comfortable in this offense,'' McCauley said. "I think we will surprise some people with the way we play."

Bartosz Lewandowski, the 7-3 freshman who stirs memories of former 7-5 Pack center Chuck Nevitt, created noise with back-to-back baskets in the second half. After wheeling for a left-handed shot from close range, he stepped out and drained an 18-footer.

Rookie Trevor Ferguson, his red-hair flopping, added 15 points. But he won't be eligible until next semester.

The score was 65-53, but Ferguson and several other players competed for both the Red and White teams in the 40-minute scrimmage.

"We got some good looks at the basket and knocked down some shots,'' Lowe said. "I'd still like to get it up [the court] quicker. Then we've got to be a little more patient [in the halfcourt].

"We've thrown a lot at 'em. They've done an unbelievable job of picking up [the schemes]. On one series they went through three options, then got the shot."

Then again, this was Red vs. White, State vs. State. Big tests loom in the distance. Yet it was a joyful night out for the Pack in general, and Lowe, in particular.

"It was a great feeling,'' he said. "The atmosphere was great as always."

Kay Yow, starting her 32nd season as the Pack women's coach, also unveiled an up-tempo team that pressed and pushed the ball.

Shayla Fields produced a game-high 19 points and Khadijah Whittington collected 16, plus eight rebounds, adding highlights to the all-Wolfpack night."

how awesome would it be if we went back to these jerseys, or a somewhat modernized equivalent - and put 'PACK' back on the shorts
