"There's speculation that Cowher could succeed N.C. State coach Chuck Amato if he's fired after this year, or that Cowher might sit out a year and start coaching the Wolfpack in 2008.

Like Cowher, Amato is a former N.C. State star. In his first four years with current San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers running the offense, Amato's teams went 8-4, 7-5, 11-3 and 8-5. But since Rivers left, N.C. State has gone 5-6, 7-5 and 3-5 so far this season."

jeez. I hate it when I see shit like this, because it brings hope to the fanbase. Just like "RICK BARNES IS ON THE WAY" and shit like that. It just seems like such a pipe dream to me.

But hell, if Cowher's up for it, give Chuck one more year, then make him Head Recruiter.

Well honestly, as much as I think Chuck is a fuckup, I'd rather him stay another year if Cowher decided to come here in 2008. I can just see him leaving after this season and Cowher not ready to come yet and we get stuck with some nobody (eg. NCSU Basketball).

^exactly. and its not like we would hire someone for one year. But I disagree with the basketball analogy.

^ My intention was not to hate on Lowe so much as to point out how we obviously didn't get the top guys on our list.

Your analogy was spot on.

Lowe is a College Basketball nobody. Sweet deal that he won a championship before the current student body was born but coaching wise? Nothing.

"Chow down for N.C. St. job?

Tennessee: Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow is another assistant whose name is being churned in the rumor mill. Word is, if North Carolina State fires coach Chuck Amato, Chow could be in line to become the next coach of the Wolfpack. Chow was the offensive coordinator when the school was flying high a few years ago with Rivers as is prize pupil.

Chow would give the Wolfpack instant credibility. Trouble is, those who know Chow think he is the type of coach who listens, but is reluctant to take a head coaching job. His personality may make him more comfortable as an assistant.

Still the Titans coaching situation could get messy, prompting a move by Chow. The heated relationship between head coach Jeff Fisher and general manger Floyd Reese could come to a head. If Fisher goes, Chow also could move on.

There has been rampant speculation that Fisher and Chow wanted to draft quarterback Matt Leinart - whom Chow coached at USC - instead of Young, whom the Titans took at No. 3. But owner Bud Adams and Reese were in favor of Young. "

Do you want NC State to be on probation?

Here is NC State's problem unless our coach is a alumni of NC State they will only use this job as a stepping stone. Thats a big problem alot of our coach's assistant's and head coach's have come have sucess and left. Norm Chow will not be our head coach. He is great friends with Chuck and would not take his friends old job. Cowher will not leave the steelers. Why coach something less worthy than you are right now. By that I mean how many coach's go to the NFL do well and say nope I think I am going to go back to college coaching. If we fire chuck we should be ready for another long search for a coach.

The stepping stone argument works.....some of the time.

Some coaches are only concerned about money and fame...

Some actually care about doing a good job, raising a family, being a part of a good community etc.

To say that every coach would use any school as a stepping stone is just not correct. Some would, some won't.

yeah, cowher may be tired of the city of Pittsburgh, who knows? he already has accomplished more than 99.9% of coaches could ever dream. Unless he feels he can be a Lombardi, why not take on a new challenge? I know he likes golf and Pinehurst is only an hour from Raleigh...

I think we should go ahead and fire him, then promote someone for a year, (if that's the time we need), with the understanding with that individual that they are only the interim head coach.

^

That just leads to more problems...

1) What if Cowher backs out?
2) What if the interim coach does extremely well?
3) Who wants to be a one year HC?

Trust me, I want Chuck gone as much as anyone, but I don't think thats the way to handle it.

^ I meant to imply if Cowher says yes, I'll come in '08. There are plenty who would want the opportunity to head coach--could improve their stock for a better hire elsewhere, as Cowher would want to find his own assistants.

I really think Chuck Amato isn't going anywhere, but I'll probably be wrong when it's all said and done. Lose to ECU, and I think he's about 85-90% out. Win, about 40%. Support him while he's still there for the time being.

THANK YOU, i thought i was the only person on here that even considered that as possible motivation. it's not so crazy to the point that anyone who implies that could be a motivating factor for a coaching job should be banned, it is, in fact, possible.

I've heard the rumors about Donnan burning bridges but does anyone have anything more then speculation on this?

Coaches who are being mentioned that maybe have SOME chance: (IMO)
Cowher
Chow
Mike Price
Paul Johnson
Skip Holtz
Jerry Kill (So. Ill coach. His resume is worth looking up if you haven't seen it.)
Jimbo Fischer
Doc Holliday
Gene Chizik (not high on either of these last 3 b/c I don't know much about them and they have 0 HC experience)
