they really looked uncoordinated in the first half, but at one point during the second half, right about the time of those two alley oops, they started looking more like a team. hopefully after a few more games they will get everything together and not look so shitty

Engin did a good job of bringing the ball up, I think he was trying to take it easy this game so that he wouldn't upset his injury

(for those who weren't there, Engin only played the first half)

This team is picked to finish dead last in the ACC. I just want them to compete and show improvement as the season goes along. Not expecting an ACC Championship or anything. And if anyone wants to hate on Lowe this year, just remember the team lost Ev, Cam, Tony, Ced, Brack and two top-100 recruits. This year is going to be ugly but it will also be key experience for our future.

The team actually looked like they were having a really good time playing basketball tonight. I havent seen that from our team in a long time...since Hodge b/c basically he didnt give a shit and had fun anyway.

Fells had another good second half. One thing he's doing that I dont like is playing D with his hands too much. It helps him steal the ball but he gets in trouble when he misses the steal. I cant help but think that costner will find his shot...and when he does...look out. He's great on the defensive boards and made some really nice passes down low. He did have some bad passes at the top though...just bad decisions.

I wouldn't expect one of Lowe's teams to compete for an ACC championship until 2008 at the earliest. You make a good point that the team lost a ton of bodies. That experience and the bodies will take time to build up.

This is getting old. I wasn't happy with the way things worked out with Herb either, but you've got to give it up. We're probably going to suck pretty bad this year...but this bitching and whining isn't going to help any. Unlike football where Amato deserves it...you've gotta give Lowe a chance....he didn't force Herb out.

However...

This is kind of scary. I doubt Neiman will turn into our Wes Miller. Engin better get his shit together by the time ACC play roles around. And we're soooo fucking thin this year. And we're not Duke....so we will get in foul trouble.

I'm not saying it's going to be a fun year...because losing a lot of games isn't fun...but it should at least be entertaining/interesting.

Ive never said anything against Lowe. I wanted Herb still here yes but Im all in favor of Lowe now that he is the man. He was the best we could get after all our choices said no. Lowe is getting started recruiting well already.

hes coming off an injury, and played his first half of basketball this year. wouldn't it make sense to wait until hes at least somewhere near 100% before saying shit like this?

I'm much more comfortable with Engin in the lineup than I am Braxton. At least Engin can bring the ball up the floor. Sometimes he makes bad passes but he's also a threat to take it to the hole and drain the 3. (not to mention he plays D)

No one mentioned Horner in the game. I know he didn't have many stats but he was lights out at the free throw line a couple of times and he's a good body to have in. He's just looks like a solid collegiate basketball player that will develop as the season goes.

That is fucking pathetic. I didn't get to go last night. But damn, I don't care if it counts or not.

Glad to see Fells get some shots to go in.

I listened to the game on the radio

And I'm pleased, we did pretty well...Grant and Fells look nice

but anyway...you can view this game as well as the Northern State game with PackPass at http://www.gopack.com

even though App State was the only football game on there, basketball season is helping me (us) get a little more of our money's worth out of that subscription

it was cold and raining pretty hard, not an ideal night to go out and watch an exhibition game

i like how the band stop doing their traveling chant after the fourth travel in the first 5 minutes.

"RALEIGH - The preseason ended Tuesday night for N.C. State and the real season will begin Friday night here in the RBC Center against Wofford.

First-year Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe says he's "ready to go." He hopes his team is.

After a 78-71 victory over Northern State last week, State conquered in-town foe and CIAA contender St. Augustine's 87-76 on Tuesday, giving the Pack a 2-0 exhibition record.

That they were victories against Division II opponents and weren't blowouts didn't matter. This young State team needed wins, a chance to improve, and experience a couple of feel-good moments before playing for keeps.

With an inclusive offense featuring four double-figure scorers and led by Gavin Grant's 24-point, eight-assist effort, Ben McCauley's 18 points and Courtney Fells' 17, the Pack looked better than it did against Northern State.

It helped to have point guard Engin Atsur play for a half before retiring for the night to rest his sore Achilles. He made a slick baseline drive and reverse layup early, and a subsequent sharp pass to McCauley (18 points). But it was obvious he's not ready to go the distance yet.

"Having him out there helps,'' said Lowe, who saw good ball movement and organization with Atsur directing the flow. "He runs the show. [But] we have to be careful. He got a little winded. We don't want him to wear down."

Grant, who scored 26 points in the first exhibition, played the point in the second half with flair after banking in a 30-foot shot to end the first half.

"Gavin looks to attack and we run plays for Gavin," Lowe said, citing the difference from Atsur. "He will definitely play some at point. We have to give Engin a blow."

Grant says he likes the "3" position but added that the point "has its perks." While he scored 18 first-half points, he had the countenance of a happy warrior with the ball, going behind his back, orchestrating and "getting other players involved" as the quarterback.

State also got another boost from its bench, with newly awarded scholarship player Bryan Nieman tossing in 11 points, a solid sequel to his 13 against Northern State.

St. Aug's, with five regulars back from last year's 19-7 team, seemed undaunted and competed to the finish, when three players dived on the floor for a loose ball.

Having no starter taller than 6 feet 7, the Falcons relied mostly on jump shooting, slashing and a mixture of defenses. They did produce the game's high scorers, sharp-shooters Antonio Fitzgerald and Nicholas King, who collected 26 points each.

The Falcons led 23-21 with seven minutes left in the first half, but then State perked up on defense and made seven straight stops to take a 34-26 lead at the break.

To start the second half, Fells -- who was 1-for-10 in the first preseason game -- was blazing hot for a spell to start the second period. He knocked down 12 points in less than five minutes, including three treys, to key a 17-9 spurt as State forged a comfortable lead.

"My role is to do whatever we need," said Fells, who is needed to score as well as play solid defense.

As for defense, that's a facet of the game Lowe wants to see his Pack tighten up before the Terriers come to town Friday.

"[Defensively], I like us in spurts, which is bad," Lowe said. "We had seven stops at the end of the first half. But in the third quarter, we need to jump on teams with more energy."

Lowe still sometimes talks in NBA time frames, quarters instead of halves.

State also will be looking to hit the boards harder. The Pack out-rebounded smaller St. Aug's 36-32 with beefy Brandon Costner snatching a game-high 11 and displaying an aggressive, wolfish growl after plucking one.

In the waning moments, the 4,838 fans got a glimpse of 7-3 Bartosz Lewandowski, who put his signature on the victory with a soft, short left-handed bucket.

Meanwhile, St. Aug's is expected to have another banner CIAA season, having been picked to win the West Division.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity to play State," St. Aug's coach Thomas Hargrove said. "It helped us get better, and our kids played to the end."

And, as Lowe said, "it's real time" for both teams from now on."
