not really: http://kenpom.com/sked.php?y=2006&team=Arizona%20St.&t=p
they're 6-16 after 22 games this year. they were 9-13 at that point last year. they finished last year ahead of two teams in the PAC-10, this year they are dead last.

02/8 at No. 9 Oregon 02/10 at Oregon State 02/15 No. 5 UCLA 02/18 USC 02/25 No. 22 Arizona 03/1 at Stanford 03/3 at California
i would say USC is their best shot since it is home, but they just knocked off oregon and are looking good.

Yeah, they've missed a lot of chances for a conference win and they don't have a good shot left.

herb did huge things for NCSU getting us back on the map and a trip to the sweet 16

You're right. Wow, one sweet 16, a handful of early exits, and a better performance than Les. Fucking huge. Almost as huge as 0-6 against Roy Williams and having like 2 players that sometimes get NBA playing time. If the man could do huge things for our program, he'd still be here. The end. He wasn't good enough. We got someone better. I don't hate the man, but I'm not going to pretend he was worth keeping in our program. 2/5/2007 4:19:41 PM |

Lowe has proven he can beat Roy Williams
I was never one of the vocal "Fire Herb" guys...ever...I appreciated the improvement of our program from the gloomy days of the mid 90s...and I never blamed Herb when good recruits like Josh Powell and Ced Simmons decided to leave school early
But look at Sendek...he has ZERO CONFERENCE WINS this season...he is clearly not having a good year at all...I think Herb helped our program but got us about as far as he could...I mean I wish him the best but he sucks ass this year...Sid is coming off back-to-back ranked wins...Sid actually got our players motivated to play UNC competitively and come away with a win.
Has Sid made a bunch of tournaments like Herb? No of course not...but at least he gives a shit about the UNC game(s) 2/5/2007 4:27:43 PM |

Its really moot because our team was loaded as hell last year and we've had alot of talent come through but herb never did much at all with it. last year was pathetic. herb is an average coach and would be good at an academic or midmajor program because thats the only time his offense might do the program some good but he will NEVER have a top notch team with that offense. 2/5/2007 4:42:40 PM |

So NC State, a school with countless NCAA apperances and 2 Nat'l Championships is the same level as Arizona State who has never won anything?
Also, we have McDonald's AAs and top 100 recruits, they have Jeff Pendergraph. Wow.

oh historically we are leaps and bounds above arizona state
but history doesnt mean a lot if you've seen state over the past 20 years when we sucked more often than not
and history doesnt have anything to do with writers picking us to finish last in the ACC...oh and we have dennis horner this year...herb took the other recruits
point is, sid and herb are both in SIMILAR situations...first year at a new school...somebody elses players...tough conference..."lowe" expectations...but Sid has beaten a couple ranked teams back to back...Herb cant win a conference game
and honestly...do you think we would've had a prayer on Saturday with Herb coaching? 2/5/2007 5:06:55 PM |

No they aren't. Some of you are arguing and don't know shit. Herb has nothing. Nieman would be a starter for Herb this year. Other than Pendergraph this team is so shitty. The old coach was fired, not run off. You should actually watch some games. BTW Herb's teams are losing by less now. Some of you are arguing that Sidney shouldn't be judged by this year, that we should give him a few years and then you come right back to these Herb hating threads and talk about how shitty Herb is doing in his first year.

Huh? Do you have any idea where the program was when Les Robinson took over? We had shitty facilities (don't act like kids in South Central or the South Bronx give a shit about the history of Reynolds b/c they flat out don't), we had one of our most beloved and famous coaches (who happened to be one of the most high profile in bball) removed in shame, we had our program being trashed in every media outlet in the world, and we had new academic standards that we were being held to. NC State is a "name program" but without the right people there to help build it back up we aren't where we are today, period.
I have had no problem and will never have any problem with fans expecting the very best. If that means they didn't think Herb was the man to do the job then so be it. It's just really old to try and belittle the good work he DID do here by saying shit like this.
Stick to sucking off Coack K and his merry band of future assistant coaches (smackoff line) and don't try and talk about State...

^ Polk was actually recruited by us a bit early on. He is a BCS conference caliber player but that means they have TWO players that are worth a damn. I watch their games from time to time since I'm in Pac-10 country and just shake my head at the lack of talent. It's astounding... They do play harder, more consistently than our Pack does this year though..

you want a real actual comparison of Herb vs. Sid, in his first full year of recruiting here Sid has the 11th best recruiting class in the nation coming in, with the same facilities, same guy in charge of recruiting (Larry Harris), and no, I repeat NO college head coaching experience. Also in six tries against a Roy coached UNX team Herb lost, and last year he had more talent and the longer bench.
I don't hate Herb, in fact I'm glad he was here. But he had a horrible record against Duke and UNC and didn't tie in our tradition to our players (and yes I think having guys around that won national championships here talking with the players does help). I can't thank him enough for getting us this far, but that was all he could do. In ten years no ACC basketball coach has failed to win an ACC championship or a National Title except Herb. Herb thanks for coming by but I think that we're both better off. 2/11/2007 5:14:09 PM |

^ I agree with you for the most part..
but to be fair to Herb the 2005 class was the 11th best in the nation. This year Sid has the 19th best class (both via Scout.com) but he did it in a very small timeframe, which is awesome.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Sid has in store for us longterm though... 2/11/2007 5:19:15 PM |

^^ sorry old source, but I guess that scout.com doesn't take into account Marques Johnson, the UTenn transfer, he didn't play a whole season this year and is now taking classes at NCSU [Herb couldn't get him here by the way]
and I'm guessing that he's the reason why Sid didn't go after a pt guard harder for this class, he had a spot

Okay so now recruiting rankings = the better coach?
I have never compared Herb to Lowe. Why are you implying that? I am defending Herb in saying that he has shit to work with. Lowe is in a MUCH better situation. It was said that both coaches were in similar situations, when really they are not similar at all.
Herb's recruiting class for 2007 is ranked top 25 by much of the experts....its really on the same level ours is. 2/11/2007 5:29:58 PM |
