Two campus opportunities:

Quote :
"Pi Beta Phi
Our national philanthropy is aimed at improving literacy nationally and in our local communities and the NC Delta chapter is holding a book drive this week to distribute among local partners that are making great strides in improving literacy here in the area.

Any and all donations are welcome and will be accepted at the Pi Beta Phi house on Greek Court after this weekend's holiday break. (I'll be glad to pick up any donations from anyone in the area and deliver them, if needed!)

FIJI
The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta are holding a first-year event, Fiji's "Kill the Chill" clothing drive" to benefit local homeless shelters. The event will take place Tuesday, December 2nd, in the Brickyard.

Again, I'll be glad to drop any donations by for anyone who can't make it but would like to contribute."

Two easy opportunities to pick up some donations while your visiting your folks or extended family over the holiday break and bring them back to Raleigh with you!

the Durham Rescue Mission estimated that we donated about $700 worth of food to them.

My cash donor was a no show this year which would have bumped us up to about a 1,000 if they matched last years donations so i didnt get to my goal. I am still happy that other companies on our block stepped up and helped out.

anyways...the holidays are just beginning and there still is a lot that can be done to help.

kudos to everyone in this thread for getting our there and giving your time and or donations.

Seems like everyone likes to donate to the homeless people. I prefer women's shelters, food banks, and other ways to help people that are trying to help themselves.

http://www.interactofwake.org/

If you have twin sheets and towels around you don't need, they need those for the shelter. I need to find mine from when I was living in the dorms on campus, don't want to own a twin bed and was wondering what to do with the sheets. I already dropped by an assortment of personal care type stuff.

what is wrong with helping homeless people??? a lot of homeless shelters are FULL. people get turned away. and a large portion of the homeless population DOES have some sort of mental impairment. geez louise. not every homeless person isn't trying to help themselves. its a little hard to just "get a job" when you have no car, no clothes, no phone, no place of residence, no where to shower, no family, no friends, no education, no skills, substance abuse problems, mental impairments, etc etc.

i don't get what is wrong with giving people a warm meal and clothes so they don't freeze to death. even if they DON'T deserve it (which i don't get how we are really in a position to judge what other people do or don't deserve since we don't know the specific plight of every individual in a bad situation, and even if we did, who are we to really judge) they are still human beings who i think should be afforded at least ONE iota of decency-- be it FOOD or CLOTHES (or heaven forbid both).

anyway...it is good that you are donating/helping but a comment like that just begs a response (i mean, there is really no other reason to make it). just because a person is homeless doesn't mean they aren't trying to help themselves. and just because someone is in a women's shelter or gets food from a food bank doesn't mean they ARE trying to help themselves.

back to the giving and good will now...

Think about it. EVERYONE talks about giving to the homeless shelters. Seems to be the charity of choice. I'm just saying the love should be spread around more, you hardly ever hear about giving to women's shelters or food banks so I wanted to mention them and post a link. I'd never heard of interact before, in fact it took me a while to find their site but I kept on looking because some of the homeless shelters get so many donations they are way too damn picky about what they will take. Only travel size toothpaste and shampoo, etc. Interact was happy to get what I dropped off, and they need twin sheet sets and I know most people reading this forum probably have a couple sets they are not using from when they were in the dorms.

If I have stuff to donate, I might as well give it to where it's needed the most and that isn't the places that get all the press like durham rescue mission. I need to email Impact and see what the need most right now in terms of personal care stuff so I can drop more off.

Donate to the national organization for rare diseases (NORD). A great non-profit organization that helps people with less than desirable insurance coverage (that don't have medicaid) apply for funding to pay for their medical bills and medications!

Charity auction (^7) is tomorrow night... it's a free event. Would love to see some of you there... bring a few friends!

PS - My family is also helping out again this year with the dinner for the homeless or otherwise down on their luck folks in Downtown this Sunday at 2pm. If you'd like to whip something up to share (little cost - great impact), I'd be glad to pick anything up! Volunteers are also welcome, too!

Just give me a shout!

Holiday Drive for the Animals
I'm an advisor for a high school club and we are collecting food, treats, toys and other supplies for shelter animals.
Items collected will be donated to the Orange County Animal Shelter.

Wish List:
Puppy food (dry & canned)
Dog food (canned and small bite dry)
Cat Litter
Blankets
Towels
Crates
Balls
Dog & Cat toys
Rawhide bones
Soft dog treats
Adjustable snap collars
Small Animal Bedding (pine or aspen)
Timothy Hay (bagged)
Guinea Pig & Rabbit Food
Peanut Butter
Latex Cleaning Gloves
Bleach
Disinfectant Hand Soap
Small Animal Cages
Small Animal Water Bottles

If you would like to donate items send me a pm and I can pick up in the Raleigh/Cary/Durham area. I live close to NCSU and can meet you around there as well.

I'm also collecting items for a 11 year old girl through an angel tree (sponsored by another club I advise) so if you'd like to contribute to that as well let me know. We're trying to put together an amazing collection of toys, clothes and accessories for the girl. I've been impressed with the generosity of my students so far.

Our department has also been collecting gifts for a homeless 15 year old male student at our school.

I try and donate equal amounts money/gifts towards charitable groups as I do on my own family... It's too easy to get caught up in the commercialism of the holidays. I feel better about buying gifts for someone who really is in need rather than my family and friends who are well off.
