I would not date someone who was homophobic. Since a lot of republicans and religions are against this concept, that rules out a lot of people that I would date. 1/6/2007 1:48:52 PM |

If people can choose to not date each other over things like looks, sizes and shapes... I don't see why excluding a wide swath of political views is that bad. I will not date someone who is homophobic, racist, or believes in spending huge amounts of money they don't have. 1/6/2007 1:53:27 PM |

it all depends on the issues, the people involved, and their upbringing. you can't decide for others. you can only speak for yourself.
guys look, we are not robots, ok? everybody is different. no two human brains are alike, so can we generalize in such a specific situation?
for me, i would never be with anybody who was:
pro-israel pro-abortion pro-US pro-war
etc
and i am not.
grumpy, you think politics doesn't matter? you are naive to think that? for most people, it does seem to matter. and look, we are talking about big issues here, like i listed, or like other people listed, such as racism, homophobia, etc. no one is saying they would have a problem with someone if they differed on issues such as taxes, immigration, etc [but again, as i said myself, people are different, so someone might, and you can't really blame them]1/6/2007 4:51:20 PM |

I think the big problem here is that I don't equate "Republican" with "homophobic racist," and that's why we're not understanding each other properly. A very large portion of the country is registered as Republican, and not all of those people hate gays, blacks, Mexicans, whatever.
So, in short, I see a difference between "I will not date a Republican/someone who voted for Bush/etc." and "I will not date a racist." One makes sense and the other seems like a heavy-handed, inane, prejudiced exclusion of damn near half of the pool of dateable females for no good reason. 1/6/2007 5:44:30 PM |

Not what I said - just saying, I WON'T DATE A FUCKING RACIST. And I've seen plenty of liberal racists, one being a Moroccan who told me to stay away from Nigerians because they're "dirty." 1/6/2007 7:07:06 PM |

Pretty much everyone who was arguing with me about it. I was saying that it was stupid to discriminate against possible dating partners based on their politics, you (and others) were saying that I was wrong because it is perfectly acceptable to discriminate against people who are racist, homophobic, what have you.
My original point was directed at 3 of 11, who said he'd never date a Republican. Now, had he said, "I'd never date a racist," I wouldn't have had a problem with it. I suppose you can lump that in with politics if you want, but to me that's kind of a stretch. Like cddweller pointed out while idiotically responding to something that was not directed at her, racists come in all sorts of political stripes. There are racists in every political party, and in every corner of the political spectrum however you want to describe it.
The point is, he didn't say "racist" or "homophobe" or "warmonger," he said "Republican."1/6/2007 11:30:47 PM |

well, if you're views on nearly everything are diametrically opposed then it wouldn't make much sense to date that person would it? I mean that whole "opposites attract" thing really only works for so long, eventually in order to have any kind of meaningful relationship you need commonality or at the very least a bit of common ground, some fundamental agreement on the most basic principles.
Based on this, I would never date a communist. 1/6/2007 11:54:23 PM |

But the odds that anyone you meet is "diametrically opposed" in their beliefs to your own are virtually nonexistant. There's always some common ground. Even a communist would agree with you on a lot more things than you might think.
Kris is a commie and I think Communism is about as dumb as political beliefs go, but we actually agree on a great many things. It's a pity that relationship never worked out -- not because of politics, but because neither of us, to my knowledge, are gay. Still, you get the idea.1/7/2007 12:04:40 AM |

Right, but why would you knowingly seek out someone who you violently disagree with on say, 70% of all philisophical questions. I mean, if you're a left wing nutjob why would you even want to try dating a right wing wacko? Politics can be a deal breaker for some folks, just like some people won't date a drinker, drug user, jew, Jeff Gordon fan, etc. 1/7/2007 1:03:50 AM |

Well of course it can be a deal breaker, I'm saying that it's kind of stupid that it would be.
You can be a Nazi, but I'll call you stupid for doing so.

Frankly, I think being "violently" opposed to that many things is pretty stupid. That would be symptomatic of total closemindedness. Really, any sane and normal person should not be so adamantly opposed to that many things.
I believe pretty strongly in a lot of the things I believe, but not enough so that I'm willing to write off people that disagree to some plane that I won't get near.1/7/2007 1:38:42 AM |

My fiance is episcopal and I'm baptist and we both hold pretty strong to our beliefs. We had been alternating which church we go to each week, but just recently decided to try going to the early morning service at one church, and then to the later service at the other church. We've been together for over 4 years, are getting married in July and it's worked out great for us. Sure we have our differences, but we respect what each other believes. 1/7/2007 5:46:40 PM |
