^It's pretty fun. It's just as challenging as fantasy football. You have to constantly monitor your lineup. Also makes you more aware of what's going on around the league.

Yeah, I saw. I'm glad I got credit last night, except for Carpenter's stats which were not Cy Young-esque, but it's all good.

^^^ Fantasy baseball can be challenging if you get too deep into all of the statistics. Honestly if you just focus on OPS for hitters and WHIP for pitchers you'll be able to make decisions on players much quicker. The higher the OPS and the lower the WHIP the better.

I never touch players with less than an 800 OPS unless they have a ton of speed and SBs. I usually avoid pitchers with WHIP greater than 1.4. It depends on what your league scoring system is, but if nothing else, OPS and WHIP provide a simple one stat ways to scan the FA lists.

our league is fairly simple for scoring...head to head...AVG, HR, RBI, SB, R...and ERA, W, SV, K, WHIP

Tom Gordon and Mike Gonzalez each had 1 scoreless inning with 2 Ks a piece for relievers today...Sabathia had 6 innings and a 4.50 ERA but he did get the win...I have Johan and Bedard both tonight haha should get 1 win...Turnbow didnt play...I have Mussina and Lilly later this week...but my dumbass also had John Patterson and his 14.73 ERA

btw we play 9 pitchers at a time haha

^ Almost all of the leagues I play in, we start between 7-9 pitchers. It can get excessive, but when young pitchers come out of nowhere kind of like Dontrelle a few years back or Johan or Liraino last year, it can make a big impact because the FA list is so shallow.

I like having guys like Scot Shields, Zumaya, Mike Gonzalez on my team because even though they may not get a bunch of save opps, they will have good ERAs, awesome K/9, great WHIPs, and will pick up a win here and there. They don't really hurt your team unless you are playing them over a decent starting pitcher.

yeah im gonna probably sit on my pitchers and see how it goes, but im wondering if i should go apeshit on the waiver wire to get Wins, Saves and Strikeouts at the expense of ERA and WHIP, since its a week-to-week head-to-head league...we'll see

^ saves are hard to get off the waiver waire unless someone gets hurt. Also that strategy normally does not work well because the guys with shitty WHIPs and ERAs aren't getting wins and are not picking up many SOs either. I tried that once coming down the stretch and picked up shit holes like Kip Wells and Kyle Lohse in order to pad the wins and SOs and innings cats and all it relly did wa ruin my WHIP, K/9 and ERA.

in my opinion threads like this are generally useless

without knowing the full context of the league and the teams involved, most commentary and advice isn't good for shit

that being said

maglio, prince fielder, and carlos zambrano for david ortiz in a standard 5x5 roto league

your thoughts?

Combined, Ordonez and Fielder should offset Ortiz. Especially if Mags say healthy. I'd go with the trade, if you can afford clearing some room. It's like getting Zambrano for free

I take that trade in a heartbeat if I was giving up Ortiz. The only thing I don't like is that you'll have to dump two other players for roster space and that could be a problem.

I'm off to one of the worst starts ever. My 2 best pitchers, Carpenter and Kazmir, both gave up 5 ER in their openers, Carp is going to miss his next start, and Ramon Hernandez hasn't swung a bat yet

Got this trade offer:

I'll be getting:
Dan Uggla
Scott Rolen
Moisés Alou
Jason Schmidt
Anibal Sánchez

I'll be giving up:
Paul Konerko
Álex Rodríguez
Robinson Canó
Tim Hudson

Personally, I'm leaning towards rejecting it, but I wanted to see what you all thought first.

are you fucking serious

that is a HORRIBLE trade

no way would i even consider that

--

uggla is a second-year player (for the MARLINS), scott rolen might play 100 games, alou will be a fourth outfielder by the all-star break, and anibal sanchez is mediocre at best

and you'd be giving up a-rod (one of the top 2-3 offensive producers in baseball), konerko (a better offensive option than any of the guys you'd receive, cano (who will score a lot of runs if nothing else), and hudson (who was lights out last night and should have a huge turn around from last year)

reject that shit

what do you guys think of the strategy for pitchers of essentially dropping all but the few best every day just to get starters...aka you should hypothetically get more strikeouts and wins, but probably at the expense of era and whip...depends on your opponent that week?

so you're saying just throw in a bunch of shitty starters every day to rack up wins and Ks?

sounds stupid, shitty starters usually won't last past five innings, if they even make it that far

you can't get a win if you don't get pitch five innings

they probably aren't going to be racking up strikeouts either

look man

you can stick a bunch of scrubs in there who might win a combined average of 12 or 13 all season

or you stick with a stud who will win you 19 or 20 and have better peripherals

your theory just sounds stupid

Twista. I know what you are talking about. I won my fantasy basketball league by doing exactly what you are talking about. I saved a few spots near the end of the NBA season, (1 1/2 months) to just plug and play.

Just make sure you dont have a max games played limit for positions.

Ernie, quit being a dick.

i wasn't being a dick

i was explaining why i thought it was a bad idea

treetwista is an admitted novice at fantasy baseball -- i have a lot of experience

i gave valid points, he was an ass, and his only counter was, "well i know a guy"

i still think it's dumb

look i'm not trying to be an ass

but it's pretty apparent that you can't carry out a legitimate conversation without resorting to name calling and sarcasm

i do not like your friend's theory

i have seen others try it, i have tried it myself

sure it can work -- in the long run, though, you will lose

i am no expert, but i have played fantasy baseball for a long time

you have not

you take my advice or you can leave, i don't care

this isn't a contest -- you asked for advice, i gave you something you didn't want to hear, you acted like a twat

i'm sorry i do not agree with your friend

yeah Ortiz, Howard, Pujols, Hafner, and many more top hitters are all struggling so far this season

could be a good time to try and work a trade to acquire one of the top tier players for some second or third tier players who are starting the season off on fire

i mean who would that include right now? sizemore maybe? although i heard on baseball tonight that he's a potential mvp candidate

plus my highest rated offensive player is russell martin around 30th or so, so i don't think that strategy will work too well for me
