I like your plan - it's close to what I was gonna say Also sounds like he might need to downgrade to a smaller place. If it's just the two of them, he can make a go of it in a studio or 1br apartment. It'll suck for a while, but it's doable and kids are troopers

I also think it's a good plan.

For the kids sake, I would keep in touch with this guy and make sure he stays on the up and up. Love or not, when there's a kid involved they should get the attention they deserve.
