From ESPN.com:
Quote :
"C.C. Sabathia recorded the 1,000th strikeout of his career on Monday, fanning Ichiro Suzuki to reach the milestone. Among players who debuted in the last 25 years, the only others to strike out 1,000 batters before turning 27 are Kerry Wood, Pedro Martinez, Dwight Gooden and Roger Clemens. (Sabathia turns 27 on July 21.) "

Pretty good company as long as he doesn't blow out his arm or develop a taste for cocaine.

BYRD JOINS THE SLIM SALLEE FAN CLUB
Paul Byrd's win total in Cleveland this year: four.

Paul Byrd's walk total in Cleveland this year: three.

In other words, this man has more wins than walks this year.

Now, obviously, he has a few more innings to pitch before he can say he did that for a whole season. But if he does ...

The last starting pitcher to have more wins than walks in a season in which he won in double figures was Bret Saberhagen (14 wins, 13 walks) in 1994. But that was the year the strike pulled the plug in August. So the last starter to accomplish this feat in a full season was noted strike-tossing machine Slim Sallee (21 wins, 20 walks) in 1919.

And how does Byrd explain this assault on Slim Sallee?

"I give up so many hits," he told the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes, "I'm afraid to give up walks."

he's gotta be the early Cy Young favorite

-----------------------IP W L SV K ERA WHIP
C.C. Sabathia (Cle - SP) 90.0 9 1 0 83 3.40 1.19

John Lackey is the only other 9 game winner so far, but he has 3 loses and ~68 K's

No way. He's the best pitcher on a great team that benefits from outstanding run support from argueably MLBs best offensive squad. The buck stops there.

Right now ya gotta think Beckett will get it because of who he plays for, the size of that fanbase and, that he has similar pitching stats to C.C. Face it : if you play for the Yanks or BoSox and have competitive numbers at the top, then you win the popularity contest (thats what it ends up being when its close).

If it werent a popularity show, then its Dan Haren by a long shot. He's got the best pure pitching numbers in all of baseball (close with Peavy but he's in the NL). He just lacks the run support to have as many wins as Beckett or C.C. (still only win one less at this point).

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5565
#1 in ERA(easily) and WHIP. Any baseball stat guru will tell you those two are most important by far. Haren would be an 11-12 game winner if he pitches for the tribe.

Great performance by Lee last night. If we're going to make the playoffs, we need more than just CC/Fausto to pitch well. The tigers still scare me because they can smack the crap out of the ball and will probably get rid of Todd Jones since he's been god awful and almost blew a game against the freaking Nationals last night.

We may need another piece in the bullpen too. Besides Betancourt, there really isn't anyone you can depend on. Hernandez hasn't looked that great, Borowoski has converted most saves, but still has a shitty ERA. Fultz is decent, but never gets used, Miller is coming off missing an entire year, plus Cabera hasn't bounced back like I thought he would.

Also, Gutierrez is really starting to shine. We need to do something with Nixon and let him become the regular right fielder.

I would love to see the tribe try to fix the void in the offense that is the platooning of nixolucci. If the reds are interested in trading Dunn, I'd take him if he would give us a 5 year contract with the trade.

been a while, but some good news:

Indians won last night and the Tigers lost, so that puts the tribe 0.5 games back in the central

The Tribe is up by 4 games on the Mariners in the wildcard race

and the best news, Kenny Lofton is back in an Indians uniform

well, we've now lost 7 of 9 at home, probably .5 games up on Seattle and up 2 up on the Yanks after the night's done in the WC race. good thing we resigned Wedge. We have to be the least disciplined team in the league. We've had like 78 K's in a 9 game homestead. That's awful. No one makes adjustments at the plate and everyone is trying to jack one into lake erie.

Words don't describe how pissed off I am right now.....maybe a thread bump will get us going again.

please?

Can't wait to see what Laffey can do in the metrodome today. He's been killing it in AAA and since Shapirio didnt make a deal to get a 4th starter or bullpen help we really need some of these prospects to pan out.

Haha last time the Indians were in the playoffs Ricky Vaughn was pitching and Willie Mays Hayes was leading off and stealing bases.

GG on the year though. I really like your manager Eric Wedge.

or you could try 2001

or before that the mid-to-late 90s

either way, call me a homer if you want but, I think the Tribe is gonna win it all this year. They have some crazy momentum right now with a great batting order, starting pitching, middle relief and closers

C.C. for Cy Young and Indians for 2007 World Champs

Ribs let me know if you want go get together for some playoff games, I got a couple other tribe friends in the area who I'm planning on watching a few of the games with

Id be down to watch some games as well. Hopefully we can keep up the hot streak and win the right to choose how they want to play out the divisional series...it would be really nice to have CC and Fausto each going twice in a 5 game series.

Game #1 vs. the Yankees is this Thursday, October 4th

even though the yanks had our number during the regular season, I dont think theres any way that they can stop the momentum we've got going heading into the playoffs

I'm getting really pumped up for this playoff run

We have superior pitching and we have to hope that is pays off vs the yankees. I dont agree with Westbrook getting the game 3 start over Byrd. He proved himself over the season and should be rewarded with the start over jake who was on the dl, then pitched horribly, and finally got it together right at the end of the season.

GO TRIBE
