"Just because it's a more socially acceptable word doesn't make it okay. The bumper sticker analogy is the same as Black poeple calling each other "nigga" colloquially."

Not really. The people with those bumper stickers likely wouldn't be offended at other non-rednecks calling them rednecks. THey would likely own up to it. A black person generally WOULD be offended for random other non-niggers* to call them nigger or nigga.

"You hear people saying "that's gay" and "faggot" all the time but it never gets the same backlash as slurs against Blacks. Why is that? How is that fair to Gay people? What about all the Gay jokes that happen in movies, tv, that are just "okay" to heterosexual people? Blades of Glory is a good example."

I haven't seen Blades of Glory, but gays do get very offended for being called faggot, or hearing the word "gay" used derogatorily. The only reason a bigger deal is not made is because mainstream society, black/white/asian/jew doesn't care about the plight of gays too much.

I agree, you shouldn't use redneck as a slur, but there are plenty of real-world situations where you can use redneck as not-a-slur. The same is not true for kike, nigger, spick, chink (i've heard that fags sometimes call each other fag, but I don't know), etc.

I asked ^ to bump this so everyone could see how naive I was back then. I see much of this same attitude from all of you right now, and it's pretty sickening. I was the same naive White middle-class idiot that I see in you and in everyone else arguing for the "rights of the White man."

I learned a lot about the struggle of minorities in the past 4 years. And I learned about how I shouldn't take for granted all the benefits I get simply for being born into a "preferred" class of the White male in America. And yeah, I regret all the stupid arguments I made. I was in a shell, and I wasn't exposed to all the shit that was happening around me. I woke up. Hopefully you will some day as well.

On my way back from a road trip to Asheville, NC & Nashville, TN with a group of people as we stopped for gas on the side of Knoxville closer to the mountains (anti-abortion/pro-jesus bill boards freaking everywhere in TN, but serious excess of them in Knoxville).

The store attendant made small talk with my husband (reposting his recollection of what he said) when he heard we were on our way back to our home in NC:
Quote :
"is that near Rallay? You got nice people there, even the blacks are nice. Not like here, they a bunch o' horse's asses. My son, he used t' live in Rallay, now he's in Atlanta, the blacks are horse's asses there too.""

I was quite happy to get back across state lines into a liberal haven like North Carolina. They just assumed that b/c he's white and in TN I guess, that racist talk was common place enough to be small talk.

Aww snaps, I was holding it down against the word "redneck" way back in the day.

GG me!

^It's unbelievable how quickly things change once you cross state lines (particularly into Tennessee and Alabama). Stop at a regular-looking gas station, and they'll have racist figurines for sale...feels like you've traveled halfway round the world.

And now you want to call out the people who have been close friends with minorities for 20+ years

Very telling

I'm not trying to tell you that learning about the struggles of minorities is wrong, in fact I'd say the opposite

However I was on TWW saying the opposite in 2001, so don't act like you're on some newfound profound knowledge that no one else is privy to. I should post FroshKiller's post from like 8 years ago about the n00b who got religious insight at college, when everybody else had learned that shit through their own experiences beforehand

oh my, how the wolfweb never changes. only on the wolf web could al sharpton and jesse jackson be the biggest racists in the world.

there has got to be some sort of name similar to Godwin's law were anytime race is brought up, some knuckle-dragging mouth-breather will come in to enlighten everyone that jackson and sharpton are the true racists holding this country back.

Kudos for educating yourself and "waking up," but trading ignorant for self-righteous is not particularly endearing.

I'd kick ronald mcdonald to the curb too.

The ironic thing is that smoking is no longer sexy and socially acceptable. If anything it was trading one form of slavery for another.
