FUCK FUCK FUCK
I was doing okay today until I got hit with the realization that if we hadn't won a few less games down the stretch that would have been us picking #1 or #2 next month.
I dont know why this is just hitting me.

Boston and Memphis actually did sit stars in an effort to tank the end of the season
And they werent rewarded
If we had tanked we'd probably have the 5th or 6th pick
btw it hit me last night once they called out the 8th pick

hey the bobcats aren't too far away from contending for a playoff spot and if they can fill a need and improve on their current roster with the help of a new coach this team could be a #7 or a #8 next year in the East. They were only seven games out of it this year and they showed they can beat some of the better teams in the league.
I am not a huge bobcats fan but I do see a good upside for them 5/23/2007 5:13:43 PM |

yeah, for what its worth, we had the best record ever for a 3rd year expansion team
however IIRC, the magic made the nba finals their 4th season?
also its looking like Sam Vincent is gonna be the new coach

I like it though...he's young enough and freshly enough out of the league to know players, know how players are nowadays, and still know some of the coaches/refs...but he's smart enough and old enough to get their respect...also even though Dallas didnt have anything for Golden State, I love getting a Mavs assistant 5/23/2007 5:16:36 PM |

RDU, I agree on Rashard Lewis. He wont' be worth the money he's going to make. I like Wallace, but if we're going to keep Wallace we need a sweet shooting 2 with decent size. I really think we should go after an athletic player on the wing. As good as all of these bigs are coming out, I don't think any of them are an upgrade over what we had. Quote : | "CHAD FORD'S MOCK DRAFT PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Portland
Greg Oden Position: C Height: 7-0 Weight: 245 Age: 19 School: Ohio State
The skinny: Jackpot! The Blazers are a good fit for Oden. With Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy, the Blazers have an extraordinary young core and will be a playoff contender next year.
Durant might be a better fit, and GM Kevin Pritchard told me he's keeping his options open, but at this point I think Oden is just too good to pass up here.
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Seattle
Kevin Durant Position: SF Height: 6-10 Weight: 190 Age: 18 School: Texas
The skinny: Durant should give the Sonics the ability to let Rashard Lewis walk when he hits free agency this summer.
But will Durant's presence save basketball in Seattle? He should draw the fans, but given all of the Sonics' weaknesses (defense, post play), will his presence translate into wins right away?
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Atlanta
Mike Conley Position: PG Height: 6-0 Weight: 170 Age: 19 School: Ohio State
The skinny: The team might be devastated that they didn't get Greg Oden, but they score his teammate for the last six years, Conley.
After passing on Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo in the last two drafts, it's time to take a point guard, right?
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Memphis
Al Horford Position: PF Height: 6-9 Weight: 235 Age: 20 School: Florida
The skinny: With the Grizzlies falling out of the lottery, their chances of landing a superstar have faded. But they could still really use some toughness and defensive rebounding in the paint. Horford is a safe pick and one of the most NBA ready.
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Boston
Yi Jianlian Position: PF Height: 7-0 Weight: 246 Age: 19 Country: China
The skinny: This is the worst-case scenario for the Celtics. With no chance to get either Oden or Durant in the fold, the Celtics seem further away from a title than ever.
Yi is a good fit in Boston, given his size and ability to score. But is he enough to save Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers?
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Milwaukee
Julian Wright Position: SF Height: 6-9 Weight: 220 Age: 20 School: Kansas
The skinny: Wright's versatility, defense and ability to play a point forward type role will be appealing to the Bucks. They already have three good scorers in Michael Redd, Charlie Villanueva and Andrew Bogut ... so Wright should be a great fit.
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Minnesota
Brandan Wright Position: PF Height: 6-10 Weight: 210 Age: 19 School: North Carolina
The skinny: The Timberwolves' biggest need is in the frontcourt. They have to get more size and athleticism, and Wright would be a steal if he falls this far. Many GMs have him ranked as the third-best prospect in the draft. He doesn't play with the intensity of Kevin Garnett, but he has a lot of similar tools.
They also could opt for point guard Mike Conley here. But if they take him, they'll have to clean up a pretty huge logjam in their backcourt.
PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS
Charlotte
Corey Brewer Position: SG Height: 6-8 Weight: 185 Age: 21 School: Florida
The skinny: If the Bobcats weren't going to win one of the two top spots in the lottery, then this is a dream come true for them. They've needed a 2 who can play defense, get to the basket and shoot from the perimeter. Brewer can do all three." |

We all realize that losing 3 more games would have given us a much better chance but it doesn't mean all of Portland's or Seattle's balls would become ours and vice versa
It just means we would have gotten more balls and they would have gotten less
The 4 number combination that was drawn still could have been one of the combinations that those 2 teams had
We would have had a better chance, but by no means would we have the winning combination for sure 5/24/2007 4:53:02 AM |

Id love to get rid of BK in some sort of trade and pick up another guard such as Javaris Crittenton who is a big guard at 6-5
maybe see on draft night if Brewer doesnt go before say 6th, then id look to move up possibly but we'd probably have to get rid of the 22nd pick
I think Wright, JianLian, and Horford will still go before Brewer. Then Conley, Wright, and Noah are a toss up with Brewer based on team need 5/24/2007 9:31:48 AM |

I mean had we lost a few more games we'd have Portlands lotto balls and theyd have ours.
It was just dumb to catch fire the last month of the season while everyone else was tanking.
This "build through the draft" strategy is not gonna work if we keep drafting shitty/average players.
At least Oden/Durant wound up in the Western conference so a team didn't leapfrog us for a playoff spot.

SportsNation Chad Ford: That's a dream scenario for them as long as they also re-sign Gerald Wallace. Then if they can add one more vet on their front line to rebound a little (maybe someone like PJ Brown) I think you see the Bobcats in the playoffs next season as long as Okafor can stay healthy. You have no way of knowing thats how it works
Its just as likely that we would have just gotten some of the ping pong balls they ended up with in addition to our
The balls are drawn randomly--no way we get the exact same ones they did
I'm still pissed we won so much at the end of the year, but a few more losses wouldn't have gaurunteed us a top two pick5/24/2007 4:17:11 PM |

A realistic look at the playoff picture as of right now ( i realize rosters could change drastically)
Going to be better than us:
Detroit, Cleveland, Washington, Chicago
Likely to be better than us:
Toronto, Miami
That would leave two spots between Charlote, New Jersey, Orlando, Indiana, Milwaukee, Philly, New York, Boston, and Atlanta
If Vince leaves NJ they become notably weaker and may even move Kidd to start over.
Orlando has some cap space and could potentially land Vince Carter.
Indiana crippled themselves through two bad trades (artest and jackson/harrington) so im not too worried about them
Milwaukee could be much improved with a healthy Villanueva and possibly Simmons. A lot depends on if Mo Williams re-signs or they replace him with a capable PG.
Philly doesn't scare me they just dont have the weapons.
New York improved this year but i dont see them really getting any better this offseason. They are stuck with Marbury/Francis for another couple of seasons
Boston would need a healthy Szcerbiak and some of their young players to really improve to be better than us
Atlanta would have a CHANCE to be better than us if they got good PG play.
Basically I dont think we're any better than 50/50 to make the postseason as of right now so I definitely wouldn't fire a new head coach unless we totally bomb next year (less than 33-34 wins) 5/24/2007 4:21:45 PM |
jccraft1 Veteran 387 Posts user info edit post |
so in your eyes an expansion team that "makes the playoffs" after four years is successful?
I guess you could be right about how the franchise is progressing but, I still say we will suck.
"The Charlotte Bobcats posted the all-time best third year expansion team record in recent NBA expansion history after posting 33 wins during the 2006-07 season. In the last 20-plus years, no other NBA expansion team has recorded a better record and no team has won more than 26 games in their third season until the Bobcats surpassed that mark on March 28 against Atlanta. The Bobcats 33 wins, 20 home victories and 13 road wins this season are a franchise best. Charlotte’s previous highs were 26 wins overall, 17 home wins and nine road victories, all recorded during the 2005-06 season." 5/24/2007 4:30:54 PM |

Unless theyve changed the format in recent years i really dont understand what you are getting at.
We would have switched spots with Portland or Seattle, therefore we would have had their "balls" and would have been in position to make the #1 or #2 pick.
You are making this way too complicated.5/24/2007 7:25:35 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
its still a random lottery
granted the more losses you have, the more ping pong balls
still doesnt guarantee a top 3 pick...ask boston and memphis if tanking at the end of a season guarantees a top 3 pick
but regardless, we got the 8th pick...the lottery is over and portland won 5/24/2007 7:28:18 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
if we had portlands pick we'd be picking #1.
That seems really obvious, i dont know how you can argue it.
Its a random fucking lotto.... it doesnt care what team is on the ball, its gonna be the same regardless of which team is in which spot.... 5/24/2007 7:36:37 PM |
dweedle All American 77386 Posts user info edit post |
rally's point is this
for the top 3 picks, 4 numbers are taken each team is assigned several 4-digit numbers the 4 numbers that were drawn for pick #1 happened to fall within the assigned numbers that were in Portland's list. If the bobcats had the record that portland had, they would have been given the same set of numbers that portland was given. I assume the assigned numbers are NOT random, because obviously the teams all have different odds of winning.
i think everyone agrees that if the lottery were performed again, different results would obviously occur
the only thing random about the lottery is what balls pop out of the windblower/mixer thing
its just that the finishing records of the teams are what determine how many number combinations are given to a team for their list of 4-digit numbers 5/24/2007 7:45:57 PM |
Saddamizer Suspended 5294 Posts user info edit post |
The lottery combinations are assigned at random when its determined how many combinations each team gets
They don't get actual ping pong balls with thier names on them
They get 4-figure combinations that are drawn from the 14 balls in the lotto machine
If we had more losses than Portland, we would have had more combinations than them, not the exact same combinations they had
When the league randomly assigned the combinations, Charlotte would have gotten more than Portland but not the same ones Portland got---its not predetermined which combinations go to what teams
If we had the same combinations as Portland had, then no shit we'd have the top pick
Its all selected randomly---if we switched records with the Blazers, it would have been completely random which combinations were assigned to us just as it was now

Im not saying if they did the lottery over again. Im saying had we been in Portlands spot (i.e. lost more games than them) we would have gotten the #1 spot.
They didnt win because they were Portland, they won because they were assigned those combinations. Had Charlotte been assigned those combinations, we would have won too. 5/24/2007 9:29:42 PM |

I would like us to get Nick Young at 8 and Sean Williams at 22. I know Williams doesn't fit our model of "character guys" but he's a legit big man and I think he's just as good as any of the big men that we could get at the 8 spot.
Young may be the piece we're missing. We need a 2. We need a shooter, scorer and athlete on the wing.
