This is purely a single player RPG... I don't think there's any form of MP.

I nearly threw my controller through the wall after about 10 minutes of playing.

I'm sure it's a good game, but the lack of jumping along with the NPC "Oh, I'll lead you there" and then not moving isn't going to endear me to it. It also suffers from the Final Fantasy "cutscene, walk around for 20 seconds, cutscene" syndrome, but a lot of people don't seem to mind that.

Why would you need to jump?

You have never been able to jump in any Bioware RPG's, it has never bothered me.

Because walking from point A to point B is monotonous and the only way you can run is when you're in "Combat Mode" at which point the running is a lot like Gears of War, which is arguably the worst game to steal movement habits from when running is concerned.

Also, I must've gotten cornered by the NPCs at least 3 times and was unable to get around them due to a box that was a foot tall sitting on the ground.

Instead of asking me why I want to jump , why dont you answer why I cant?

I've been jumping in video games since the nintendo.

WTF

I loved how Gears of War did walking/running.

You'd rather your epic RPG allowed constant sprinting and bunny-hopping?

Ok, lets look at this from the RPG perspective.

If I'm dropped off on a planet with the sole mission of extracting something as quickly as possible, I don't think my main mode of transportation should be "casual stroll". I don't think I should have to walk around rock formations that I could easily jump over and shave about "30 seconds of hold analog stick forward" off my game time.

plenty of RPGs don't let you jump

although the running thing i can see as being annoying, if all you can do is walk around at a snails pace

a lot of games limit your navigation around the environment. Guild Wars is the worst. The only games I've seen in the RPG sense that allow you to navigate any where you can physically get to (i.e. jump etc) is MMORPG's like SWG or WOW.

^ and half the time those didn't work either

these "free reign" type games will always have areas where you will get hung up on, and not including jump makes it much easier on programmers

I'll take a leisurely stroll over perpetual sprinting and circle strafing any day.

That crap always keeps me from getting into the game. That, combined with the 1st person perspective, is why I could never get into Oblivion.

I don't have any problems with the no jumping thing. It's just not that type of game. Sure, it's not gonna be for everyone, but what this game tries to do, it does very well. I'm about 3-4 hours in and the story is just getting started. So far it's living up to all the hype.

If the biggest complaint people have is "I don't like the walking speed" and "you can't jump" then:

1) They thought they were buying stealing an action game so I don't think I'll listen to them anyways.
2) If that's the worst they can complain about, that's pretty good.

You do know that you can go to 3rd person in Oblivion don't you?

EDIT: At least on the PC version I know you can.

I had no delusions about what the game is; however, regardless of game type, if you're going to have me walking all over the place, it'd be nice if I could run without the camera tilting or if I could jump over small rock formations. I don't think that's terribly outlandish. For an "RPG" there are no less than 3 buttons that throw you in to "combat mode" aka "third-person shooter mode", I don't think mapping one to "jump" would be asking too much considering the gameplay type you're trying to emulate.

The biggest problem with the game, from my brief 20 minutes of playtime, was that the AI was atrocious and if you walk into a small room, they're going to block your exit. You have to try ordering them all over the place to try and get them out of your way, since -- like I said, you can't just jump over the one foot high box sitting on the ground. The best example of this was when I was trying to leave a room in a camp and couldn't because an NPC on my team was in the way and then says "Looks like it's blocked."

Like I said, I'm sure it's a good game, but it's certainly nowhere near flawless in my opinion.

Considering they'd have to make sure that jumping wouldn't do things like get you stuck, make you fall through clipping planes, etc. just to add something that would add absolutely nothing to the gameplay except something purely visual...

If you played WoW during the early stages or RPG's like Ultima IX and others you should know all about that.

Does this describe any game? ever??

There are always issues, and what you may consider a 9.9/10, I may hate.

Sure there are issues, but with the detail and depth that games are expected to have these days, there is no way there will not be issues, or shortcuts taken. Obviously with the 360 failure rate, consumers have come to expect glitches in the video game industry. Same with computers.

There will never, and I repeat, never be a perfect game.

In the grand scheme of things, when I think desired in-game features I would rather "jump" than have a "cover system" especially if this is supposed to be (at least in part) a shooter. It's not like this is an engine they built from scratch here, and somehow I get the feeling when Unreal made the engine, they didn't make jumping this overly difficult piece to add in.

There's a difference between having a door blocked and not being able to move through a room because of some little aesthetic touch on the ground that you can't maneuver around or over. In COD4 you could just jump over the object. In Mass Effect, you have to back up, order your troops elsewhere -- hope they actually go there, which doesn't always happen because then you're in the way -- then go back through the opening.

Yes, but if I say someone's new holy grail of gaming is mediocre, it's just going to turn into some giant shitfest. I understand how the game could be good, but the aspects of it that I've experienced have been non-impressive and frustrating. The story seemed like it could be cool down the line though.

Jeez, you mean you really give this much of a crap about jumping?

Jumping to avoid an obstacle really isn't realistic.

I wonder how often a SWAT team implements jumping when they're breaching a building? And you know, I've never once seen a video of our soldiers in Iraq jumping over wooden crates to avoid them.

And I'm sure the design team was fully aware that the objects you're describing weren't jumpable. Clearly their intent in placing them in the room was something other than "aesthetic."

Seriously, why are you guys giving Stein so much shit about his opinion on this game? I'll admit, I usually don't agree with him on a single thing gaming related, but I also play the game myself first before disagreeing with him. No one else in this thread has even played the game, and there is a very limited number of reviews so far. At least wait for the fucking thing to come out.

^^If you're going to go that route...

I wonder how often SWAT teams don't jump when they face an obstacle that could easily be jumped over? I'll bet that under the pressure of battle the leader of the squad orders each individual, one by one, to walk 10 feet to their left so he can then walk around the obstacle.

It's a game. You can walk through bushes instead of following a narrow trail in real life as well.

Generally you would use "jump" in lieu of "step over" since in video games they function about the same. I would accept a "step over" button as well. I mean, I doubt SWAT teams try to bump one another out of the way while trying to walk down a hallway because a trash can has been knocked over blocking a portion of it.

Look, I just like to be able to not have my way impeded by a tiny box or a rock that's about six inches tall. You'll understand when you play the game just how annoying it is.

The game's awesome.

The person complaining about running/jumping is on crack.

The only significant problem so far is with frequent graphics hiccuping/loading.

Back to playing now.
