How is it nonsense. I like how you resorted to calling me a faggot. That's real mature. The ACC nearly had a team into the Final Four if Roy Williams and the rest of the team hadn't gone catatonic for the final few minutes and overtime. Give Georgetown credit though for one of the best comebacks I've seen in awhile. Had Carolina made it to the Final Four and perhaps even the championship game, would you be singing a different tune. The George Mason and USC arguments are good arguments. One team doesn't make a conference. The ACC was collectively stronger than most of the conferences last year. The SEC seemed pretty tough last year, with many capable teams. Most conferences do well if one team makes it to the Final Four and two make it to the Sweet Sixteen. So the ACC laid a giant egg in the tournament, that still doesn't account for how tough most of the teams were during the regular season. You say that having the most teams ranked in the top 20-40 doesn't make us the best basketball conference but it does make us one of the deepest, which therein lies why most people considered the ACC one of the better conferences last year. To win the regular season in such a conference means that the champ would have a tough road to go through. Most teams in the sweet sixteen and on are the best teams from the best conferences, so it's not surprising when a No. 1 seed doesn't make it to the Final Four. I really don't think that the ACC was the toughest conference last year, but a remark such as the ACC was the weakest is absurd.

^ agreed

not to mention the fact that the majority of the incoming freshmen who leave for the nba after one or two seasons come to the acc to hone their skills and go on to the pros. While this may not say much about the character of the acc players, it's obvious they come to the acc because they know the competition top to bottom is the best year in and year out. them leaving after one or two years makes it hard for their teams to have any sort of continuity for the next year and to go deep in the tournament. you can't tell me you wouldn't pick the acc to be tops this coming season if the likes of wright, crittendon, young, mcroberts, etc. etc. (from years before) hadn't stuck around. And even losing players of this caliber each year, the acc still puts up a good fight in a given year. Basing you're assessment of them being the weakest conference on one or two years of not dominating in the tourney is tantamount to saying that the sec isn't the best football conference because they had an inordinate amount of losses in a given bowl season. And I seriously doubt you're going to convince an average fan (who isn't blinded by conference loyalties) that the sec isn't the best football conference in the country.

Things that would improve the RBC Center and increase revenue:

- do not install seats on the sidelines and leave out the fold out chairs in the end court seating. this would turn them into riser sections, therefore putting more students on the sidelines and in the end court. this would make it possible to either sell off the student seating in the upper deck as season tickets, or take some of the student seating in the upper portion of the student section that is behind the band, and sell them as part of a season ticket package to alumni that want to stand and be raucous like they had never left the student section. also some of the aisles in the upper deck have seats at the top of them and some don't. why not put in seats in the top of those aisles too. place some kind of seats over the two tunnels that are not used by the two teams. these changes would surely take us over 20k, perhaps even bring us to 21k, and increase revenue, which would easily pay for the any new seats and their installation in the first season and then some.

- place a NC State Basketball Hall Of Fame beside the arena. this would educate our fans and opposing fans on our tradition and be a place of pride for our fans. also it might be a safer place to store the two National Championship trophies then what we currently have.

- place statues of Case, Sloan, and Valvano in the front entrance with plaques at the base telling about them, and their contributions to the State basketball program and basketball in general.

- have Mr. and Ms. Wuf go around and get the old farts out of their chairs.

- sellout often and early.

- most importantly win. selling out will become more commonplace, and students won't complain about getting upper deck tickets. they will be happy just to be there. maybe then we will get the recognition that we deserve for being one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. i always am disturbed that i never see us in any toughest places to play discussions, especially when places like Florida's O'Connell Center aka "The O-Dome" and UNC's Dean Dome are mentioned. we have one of the best student section setups in the nation, one of the loudest arenas, and are continually overlooked nationally. i think Lowe will take us to national prominence and continue to build on the stable foundation that Herb rebuilt for us.

They are currently located in a glass enclosure along with a bunch of other trophies on the 100-level concourse. It looks like it could be broken into pretty easily. Someone could just hide somewhere in the arena, and once they close it up, go over break into it and walk on out with them. I think some of the other trophies are Southern Conference Championships, some ACC Championships, and some Dixie Classic Tournament Championships. There also might be some trophies from some other tournaments in there.

story on Costner and why he didn't make the Pan-Am team (minor knee ligament injury), and also a little bit on the upcoming season.

Quote :
"Before a weight-room workout Thursday, Costner said the high expectations for the 2007-08 season are justified.

"I can't wait to get going. None of us can," he said. "I think the sky's going to be the limit for us, I really do."

The only nagging offseason question is at point guard, where departed senior Engin Atsur's leadership and ball-handling will have to be replaced. For now, that problem bothers Costner less than it does many of the team's fans.

"The new guys are going to help a lot," he said. "I've played with them a lot this summer, and I think they're going make a difference. [Point-guard recruit] Javi Gonzalez is the real thing. He's definitely going to help."

Costner says his knee is back to 100 percent and that he's counting the days until his next official practice session.

"I wish it would be tomorrow," he said. "

What are the greatest college basketball games ever played. I submit the 1974 ACC Tournament Final pitting No. 1 North Carolina State vs. No. 5 (No. 4 in another poll) Maryland.

http://home.carolina.rr.com/mcguires/greatest_college_basketball_game.htm

This is what sticks out about that game to me.

Quote :
"Perhaps one statistic sums up the quality of game it was. In 40 minutes of up tempo basketball, there was not one turnover, not one. The only turnovers of the game came in overtime and turned out to be critical. There was such offensive excellence, the losing team shot 62 percent."

If you ever get to watch it on ESPN Classic, you may want to tape it.

The national title that wasn't
http://sectionsix.blogspot.com/2007/07/national-title-that-wasnt.html

Quote :
"Red Brown, the coach at West Virginia, was a good coach and a great guy, but my first choice was North Carolina State. I liked coach Everett Case, and along with Kentucky they were the best thing in the South. I could tell Coach Case knew a lot about basketball and they had a lot of talent in their program. I went there for a couple of visits and they treated me well. He had invited me down there illegally for a tryout my sophomore year in high school. That summer they put me in a basketball camp and got me a job as a lifeguard at pool on the NC State campus, even though I couldn't swim. I was assigned to the wading pool, but mostly I got paid for laying in the sun. It was like Grand Central Station the way they had kids coming in from everywhere in the country. I've never seen anything like it. They put me up in a dorm and I spent my days lying by the pool and spent my nights driving a fancy Olds and wearing the fancy duds they gave me. I was loving it. Like I said, they treated me well.

A little too well, maybe. The Atlantic Coast Conference declared 14 of North Carolina State's players ineligible because they were brought in for tryouts as high school students, which was against the rules, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association was starting to investigate the school's recruiting practices as well. The NCAA was looking for even harsher penalties for both the school and individuals, and my name got mentioned. NC State wasn't doing anything other schools weren't doing. They just got caught. But I was one of the ones they brought in for illegal tryouts and I was scared. If I went there now, would I be jeopardizing my career?"

Quote :
"During the three-hour dinner, Scheer posed a question: How would things have turned out if the story had not been written, the NCAA had not intervened and had he remained at North Carolina State?

“In my junior year,’’ said Hot Rod, “we would have won a national championship.’’"

Asshole Carolina fans in the media ratting us out. Stingray your cool with me though. I mean I know cheating is bad and everything, but the stuff Case was doing wasn't any worse than what all the other schools did. The 1950s were some of the most corrupt times in college basketball. Frank McGuire was proof of that as well.

I think the key word there is help. Perhaps he means help out running the point. I'm still not sold on him being the starter right off. I think Degand has the edge b/c he had more time to learn the offense and more experience running it in practice than Johnson and Gonzalez. Personally I hope all three contribute significantly. If we can keep them all fresh, then that means they are less likely to commit errors due to fatigue. A lazy pass here, a mental error due to fatigue there.

All-Rolls Royce
By Dick Vitale

ACC Notables
Quote :
"
First Team
F: Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina: Hansbrough is simply as tough as they come and he will anchor what could be a tough North Carolina frontcourt next season.

SECOND TEAM
G: Sean Singletary, Virginia: Singletary is going to have a super season for the Cavaliers this season as they could surprise some teams behind the guard from Philadelphia.

FIFTH TEAM
F: Brandon Costner, NC State: Costner should have a big season and could be dancing with the Wolfpack!

G: Ty Lawson, North Carolina: Lawson will be even more special with a year's experience under his belt."

Also these are notable as we are playing Michigan State
Quote :
"
First Team
G: Drew Neitzel, Michigan State: This is a special backcourt with Tom Izzo's version of Mr. Clutch in Neitzel. Drew has had a fabulous career in East Lansing and I'm sure he'd love to cap it cutting down the nets at the end of the season.

Fourth Team
F: Raymar Morgan, Michigan State: He had a good season last year, but Morgan is going to step it up even more for Izzo's squad."

So "Ballin' at the Old Barn" will be on Friday Oct. 19th at 9:00 pm in Reynolds Coliseum, then the Red and White game will be on Oct. 27th at the RBC Center. More than likely the R&W game will be scheduled to be sometime before the Virginia game so the most Pack fans can come to the game. It'd be nice if they increased the tailgating time for that day so that people couldn't complain about wanting to go to the R&W game, but not have enough tailgating time.

ACC Predictions for regular season

1. UNC
2. State
3. Duke
4. CU
5. GT
6. UMD
7. UVA
8. BC
9. VT
10. FSU
11. UM
12. WF (next year could be tough on Dino and the team due to the loss of Skip so close to the season)
