I bought an electric guitar from harry's and have been playing for abouta month and a half now...I got a pretty shitty set-up; I didnt want to spend too much money at first, but now I absolutley love playing. Eventually I want to get a nicer set-up but for monetary reasons thats not possible atm. for now i just want to get some new strings to try and get a better sound than the stock strings. Any suggestions for straight rock/classic rock/blues sound?

IMO Ernie Ball makes the best electric strings.

I'd probably go with Elixir for acoustic if you can afford it

yea just depends, ernie balls are solid strings for the most part. i dont use them anymore but they are plenty good enough for most sounds.

Unfortunately if you dont like the way your guitar sounds, strings are generally not close to the biggest culprit. However youre doing the right thing by not spending too much money and then quitting a few months down the road

keep at it and hopefully someone will be able to help you once youre ready for a new guitar

I really think string brand all comes down to personal preference...I like D'Addario. For a nice blues/rock sound, though, I'd go with at least .011's. I switched to them and the sound improved so much that I immediately went to .012's. That might be a bit extreme for a beginner, but you'll definitely appreciated the thickness it adds to your tone.

gah thats a REALLY nice guitar. one of the early 2000 Japan Made S Prestiges but im not a fan of the color and i guess im old fashioned but i like somewhat normal fret inlays :/ the hardware and neck on those models are sooo well made tho argh

Does anyone here have any advice or experience on quality Luthiers (sp?) in the Raleigh area? I know Yontz does all the electronic work you can think of but I dont know that he does fret dressing etc.

If I get one of these Ibanez S guitars ive been looking at for awhile im getting him to install the EMGs i normally use, but I am also going to want find someone to help me get the bridge and intonation professionally set up using the string gauge and tuning I am going to be using rather than the stock setup as well as get the frets dressed if they need to be while setting the bridge up. Possibly different fret inlays as well.

Obviously getting this done by someone who is second rate can create all kinds of quirks such as extra strain in your neck, unwanted sharps and flats on your notes, random buzzing etc. so im looking for someone who has a decent reputation.

this may be out of place. If so, I'm sorry...

Does anyone know where I could get a few lessons for fairly cheap? I was going to try to get into the group guitar lessons on campus that I've seen advertised in years past, but never saw the sandwich board this year I bought a brand new guitar (Schecter Diamond Series) & an amp (65W Crate amp) on a whim exactly one year ago... but it hasn't been touched much since. I'd love to actually learn to play it, but trying to learn the basics/scales by myself online doesn't seem to hold my attention at all. If anyone has any ideas, that would be awesome. Thanks!

finally got ahold of the 2005 Ibanez model I wanted:




personally i like the ZR bridge better than los, edges, and schallers. From the little bit ive messed around with them, they seemed to stay in tune the best and require the least resistance in hammering the bridge.

putting my preferred EMG 81/85 set in for the humbuckers of course and getting it set up hopefully within the next few weeks for my tuning and string gauge.

the thing i don't like about ibanez s's (other than the body shape) would have to be the lack of S-S-H configuration on a 22 fret guitar. I just can't see myself putting anything other than SD-Hotrails in the neck position on one. But yeah those ZR bridges are pretty sick. I still prefer the schaller on caparisons.

The previous post was part of my quest for a P-90 equipped hollowbody that I could procure...as it became obvious that I wasn't going to see a Valensi around here any time soon, I tried out a Casino. I really liked the sound (the Casino is a true thin hollowbody, there's no body block like an ES-335 has) but not enough to justify the price. I stopped by Harry's just before closing and stumbled upon a '97 Epiphone Sorrento (basically a single-cut Casino, still a true hollowbody with P-90s) with Grovers, a Bigsby, and a case for less than half the price of the Casino. I left with it ten minutes later...not really the best impulse buy, but better than the Casino would've been.

so as an early birthday present i got that 2005 Ibanez S470 i posted pics of earlier and WOW i couldnt have made a better purchase...the thing plays BEAUTIFULLY. getting my favorite active pickups installed this weekend as well as having someone adjust the bridge for the tuning and string gauge I want...and hopefully it still plays as well afterwards heh.

But I seriously cant wait to get it setup and play it through my real amp next time im in raleigh.

Guys.. bear with me here.. I am relatively a newbie to playing on electric.. in the sense that I don't know (other than it's appearance and the obvious sound output), what to look for when buying a new electric guitar. I do play acoustic pretty decently (still learning though) and was thinking of buying an electric soon. What would be your suggestion, considering I've never played electric before? From what I've looked, I've liked fender strats, but that's pretty much all I've tried.

Another newbie question. I'm just starting to play. I've got a cheap Hohner acoustic, but playing acoustic isn't really my ultimate goal with this. If I want to play electric, would it be better to go ahead and learn on one? I was thinking about biting the bullet and getting a Mexican Strat.

For example, Prince's main guitars for the past 27 years have been Hohner Telecasters that were made in Germany.
