im offended that this thread would even THINK to suggest that Soulja Boy is not the premier rap lyricist.

digging in the crates dosen't equate to backpack music, at least not in my dictionary

just saying its a different era of hip hop history. i'd say the same if you said dj premier was spinning at the club

all im saying is that i dont like or dislike music based on if its popular or not, i hope you wouldnt think i did, it just so happens that a lot of popular shit is garbage so i dont really have much reason to listen to the shit they play on (non satellite) radio or at the trendy shit clubs

like i said though agree to disagree ftw

i just dont like when people think i ONLY like some kind of rare snobbish shit and hate stuff BECAUSE its popular...cause i know that type too and thats not me

^ agreed. I'm gonna have to go with Jay-Z winning this battle. Maybe i'll listen to some old school Nas and give him a little more credit later today.

seriously, this is what, the 18th thread on this topic over the past 6-7 years? J_hova and twista always take a side, and the rest of us fall in line. it's like an annual event. as soon as nas releases his next album, this will come up again.

personally, i'd take unk and that "tea bag" song over both of 'em, but that's just me...

hahaha, look back at the other 17 threads, i've contributed on this topic many times before.

both are great. personally, i'd take jay-z over nas, but that's just one man's opinion. blueprint's one of my favorite rap albums of the decade, and nas has been too inconsistent since illmatic. although...i did like "hip hop is dead" 10X more than "kingdom come". word.

All I got to say is Ether....after that dropped it was game set and match to Nas. I don't care what Jay-Z has done before and since then but when I heard ether it was game over. Jay has done some hot shit over the years but I pick Nas anyday of the week.

ether was hot, but it was full of bullshit. Rockerfeller didn't die of AIDS... that shit wasn't even around then. "gay-z?" good one! How bout the fact that jay didn't have to resort to shit like that to tear Nas a new asshole.

yeah everybody says Nas won that battle...Ether may have been a hotter song. But for the better "lyricist" to resort to calling somebody a "fag" and shouting false bullshit really detracts from it for me. Jay talked about real shit. Considering Jay is now Nasir's boss, the argument is kinda moot.

Illmatic is better than any Jay Z album but Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint and the Black Album are all much better than anything Nas has done since. Stillmatic and it was written were decent albums but they aren't fucking with the Blueprint. Since this is art, it's pretty subjective and there's not going to be a winner in this argument. Personally I like Jay Z better, though I recognize this may be because his beats are far superior. (but shouldn't that be at least a small factor when comparing the two as artists...they do have a choice in this). If Rappers were judged the same way we would judge sports figures, Jay would win this hands down.

When Nas is on his game, he's far better than jay. But those times are rare. I think Nas gets too much credit for being "lyrical and deep" when sometimes he just uses words that young (or stupid)rap fans just don't understand while not actually saying shit.

While success isn't how I would judge music, it's hard to ignore the fact that Jay Z ran shit for about 8 straight years while Nas had years where he wasn't even relevant.

hey i happened on a copy of blueprint again today and took it as fate so i gave it another spin and was reminded of how jays work went to pure garbage after the big pimpin timeframe.

theres an artist who fits into rap culture and a rapper who tries to be an artist. nas and jay-z, there you have it.

yea i think this may be one of the great debates of hip-hop for some time to come. one thing is certain is that the fans win . i enjoyed the beef A LOT and the fact that no one died makes it even better.

all i will add today is

Quote :
"I think Nas gets too much credit for being "lyrical and deep" "

I think Jay gets too much credit for "hiring producers that makes chicks dance"

Quote :
"When Nas is on his game, he's far better than jay"

^^^^ are you saying the blueprint is garbage? 'cause that was two albums after big pimpin'. i think after the blueprint jay has fallen off, but that album was sick - and it had no dance hits or neptunes beats on it.

I can enjoy Nas' catalouge, you just make it seem like you can't enjoy Jay-Zs

and I don't think in any of my shit i've ever said which one is better or worse, but I could be wrong seeing as we've been through this numerous times

but seriously, at least Jehovah and Nastradamus and Rocafella are plays on words

The Blueprint is just biting

i'm with hova. it's the same argument w/ big and pac, i enjoy both but I enjoy big more. u always run into those assholes who say big n pac shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence like their opinion is fact. and we all know ...you shouldn't argue with fools cause from a distance people can't tell who is who.

see i disagree that the nas/jay thing is the same...I too enjoy both Big and Pac...I do enjoy Nas and I don't enjoy Jay, but hey thats just me

i wish you'd see the difference in doing plays on words and straight biting from another hip hop album...kinda like what your boy Jay does with Big's rhymes

you aint saying nothing anyone doesn't know, hence the beating the dead horse

how many MCs bite jay-zs swagger, style, flow, and shit his rhymes too?

take away bigs lines and tell me he still doesn't put out dope shit, Biggies lyrics never made a jay-z song

"im not a biter ima writer for myself and others

well thats another problem...seems like the whole mainstream game doesnt give a fuck about originality...thats why they put out the same cookie cutter shit...lots of times its not that they're trying to get their own shit out there on the map...they're trying to follow a formula for hip pop

and Jay bit half his style and his flow too, doesnt mean the shit should just keep going on...and you wonder why i dont keep up with a lot of the new mainstream shit...its not because its mainstream...its because its recycled trash
