Quote : | "It was real sad driving through Arizona/New Mexico/Texas along I40 (old Route 66). There are towns every 30-50 miles that were built up by Route 66, but I40 was paved bypassing the city, and they are all old and decrepit." |
Heh. For every town that has a bypass, there are two or three that are back to being just railroad depots.
I only drove 1/4 of 66, from Phillipsburg, MO to Conway, TX (~600 miles). Took me most of 2 days.
I didn't even begin to document it properly.
Only 90 pictures! Starting with:

But it's a strech of road I'll never forget. I found my "home" on the road, so to speak. Someday I'm gonna do the whole trip. Take out a week and half for that.]9/27/2008 10:05:01 AM |

me an BigBlueRam did this about 6 months ago- rode out to denver, bought a 73 newport and came back the long way. you're right about all the route 66 towns, and places through new mexico, texas, oklahoma, they're all dead. message_topic.aspx?topic=523478 thats the trip thread. 11/6/2008 3:46:08 PM |

very nice, very nice.
i'm jealous - wish i had the old car to go along with my trips.
i once plotted out 66 on google maps
following the old route and allowing for some sight-seeing time, it would take about 8 days at ~9.5-10.5 hours a day of driving (of course, you could do less driving and see more off the road)
Chicago - St. Louis - Springfield - OK City - Tucumcari - Gallup - Seligman - Barstow - Santa Monica http://tinyurl.com/6ncfbx, http://tinyurl.com/5pdbsh, http://tinyurl.com/6n2xnd, http://tinyurl.com/6xzqf2, http://tinyurl.com/6gqvc8

So I'm planning a road trip for Summer 2009, is there any particular website that you've used that is good for planning a road trip? I've already used Google Maps to plan the route but that's about it. I didn't know if there is a specialized site for something like this, its a pretty long trip, 7000+ miles... ideas? 12/26/2008 1:59:23 AM |
chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
not really
your best bet is to just research as much as possible about the routes you're taking, the places you'll pass through and stay, and what's going on during the time you'll be on the road.
if you don't mind me asking, could you go into a little more detail 12/26/2008 9:14:27 AM |

It's a post-graduation trip that a friend and I are taking, we're giving ourselves about 6 weeks, middle of May til the end of June. We've got friends in several of the stops, and plan on either camping or getting hotels in the other places depending on how we're feeling. This week I'm going to start looking at what kind of events are going on in the cities at the approximate times we'll be there, suggestions are appreciated! 12/26/2008 11:40:26 AM |

chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
Shit, I had planned to do a similar trip in the space of about 2 1/2 weeks.
I don't even know where to begin with suggestions for you.
With only 100-odd miles to do on average a day, even keeping to the old highways, which you should do always on a trip like this, you'll be free to experience most everything along the way. 12/27/2008 5:08:51 PM |
xmikemasonx Veteran 339 Posts user info edit post |
yeah I'm really excited that we were able to get 6 weeks for the trip, we'll probably spend a good amount of time in Denver and southern California. I went to San Clemente last year and I plan on spending at least 3-5 days there if the surf is good at the time. Although I've been to California before, I've never actually driven any farther west than the Mississippi. I just bought a Canon XSi and I fully intend on creating a photo website/blog to document our adventure. Only 4 1/2 more months! 12/27/2008 11:19:22 PM |

I wish I could have six weeks in the car
This year's roadtrip: July 9 - arrive in chicago july 11 - pocahontas, IA (with lunch in grand rapids with my uncle) from there, we'll go through the badlands and visit rushmore on the way to grand teton, and then hit up yellowstone, and then glacier, and turn towards home.
The route home is undecided. The only two certainties are that we'll go to wahkon, MN, and be back by 7/26 5/14/2009 1:08:15 PM |

this is a rough one-- i did it in feb
from houston - el paso is 12 hours, halfway OY!! but west texas at night with the sky full of stars is incredible
the best part was once you cross into california and are getting close to san diego, you drive through this boulder-like mountain thing that is so alien seeming, i could stare at it for hours
also watching people cruise on the sand dunes! i wanted to get out and try it
have fun and more power to you. haters will hate, do whatever the fuck you want
btw breaking on msn... planning a summer road trip
