I had to work.

What is the deal with the recruited walk-on Clayton Beard?

Barton had some small but scrappy little fuckers on their team. Their fans are very supportive. Hell, I think they were louder than the rest of the RBC center even when their team was walking off.

Yeah Barton fans didn't seem to notice the score, they cheered just as loud as the beginning when their guys made a good play, even when they were down 40....

I saw mostly good things from the team, a little sloppy and poor defensive stands occasionally though, Hickson seemed worn out all the time even though he had huge rests, though he still produced when he needed too.

And it looks like we're using the same intro as last season, which all of the fans seem still not to be able to keep the tempo to.................I mean just clap with the bouncing ball, everybody rushes like crazy and goes way too fast

that's just because they don't want to show a new one for a preseason game, adds a little extra to opening night i guess.

[Edited on November 1, 2007 at 9:47 PM. Reason : ^that seems a little low for some reason, but i guess pretty good anyway]

^^ it seemed like lowe was using the first game action for this team to play with different lineups and rotations. no offense to the kid, but harris probably won't be part of the regular rotation once we hit full swing in the season. gotta get the main 7-8 guy rotation ready first.

that said, trevor ferguson still looks like he hasn't picked up a basketball in 3 years.

As skokian, ncsumeb, and some others mentioned...we have some stuff to work on.

I wasn't too pleased with our teams effort, but I'd have a hard time getting into dominating a team that I was beating handily without trying.

I attribute a lot of the slack rebounding and bull fighting defense to just not really caring about playing Barton.

Gavin and Degand looked into it nearly the whole game, which is good that our leaders weren't slacking. I don't think Degand is necessarily going to have that certain "...." that Engin had, but his speed getting up the floor is definitely better and should give us some addition fast break options that we didn't have before.

Hickson looked uninterested, but when he did get the rock near the basket he showed that he is strong as hell. It's been since Damon Thorton that I remember someone being that strong, and Hickson looks a lot more controlled with the ball.

cj leslie ('10 commitment) and john wall (5* senior PG) were sitting behind the bench. two black guys with the white t's and diamond ear rings. wall is a stud... we need to get the commitment from him soon.

im glad barton had a bunch of fans there. this was their biggest game of the year... and it didnt even count. good fan support though.

i was content with the crowd. lower level sidelines were packed, a lot of people in the club seats, and a decent spattering of people throughout the end zones. as far as noise goes, we were quiet as mice, but it was an exhibition so that's understandable.

a lot of barton fans. they were rowdy though.

i think someone said gopack reported 8k or so. i definitely would have guess several thousand more though 11-13k at least.

and there were more than the lower level sidelines.. i would probably guess minus the people in the 200's that the lower level was completely filled minus the amount of seats in the 100's student section, give or take a few

Props to the Barton fans. Damn near the whole town of Wilson was there for their team being loud as hell the whole game.

#33 for Barton was scrappy as hell on the boards. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Degand is the shit, but Hickson needs to get his wind up. He also could stand to play straight-up D instead of going for the block every time.

Is anyone else digging that 87.5% freethrow shooting for NCSU? Keep that up, and we're winning the close games.

Sloppy passing, but I think that will work itself out. Fergie may not see much time this year once Javi gets into the mix.

We are a damn tall team that can shoot outside and run the court. That's going to cause all sorts of matchup difficulties for others.

I haven't been this excited about NCSU hoops in at least 10 years. Syd's the shit, and it's obvious that the team loves the guy.

Game Recap

Quote :
"Brandon Costner put up 17 points in the first half on his way to a game-high 22 for the evening, adding six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in just 25 minutes. He was joined in double-figures by teammates Courtney Fells (16), Gavin Grant (14), J.J. Hickson (11) and Tracy Smith (11).

After posting a 20-point halftime lead, 47-27, the Wolfpack shot a scintillating 68 percent (17-25) in the final minutes to roll to the 37-point victory. The Pack used good ball movement, pounding the ball inside repeatedly against a Barton squad that featured no player taller than 6-6. State handed out 26 assists with just 13 turnovers, while the visitors had just 10 assists to 20 turnovers. The Wolfpack wound up shooting 58.6 percent (34-58) while limiting Barton to 37.7 percent (23-61).

The Pack jumped out to a commanding 28-6 lead in front of an impressive crowd for an exhibition game. A small but vocal blue-clad contingent of Barton College supporters loudly urged on the visiting squad, but the defending champs could not deal with Costner and Smith, who knocked down all four of his first-half shots on his way to nine points. Fells had a nice all-around performance in the first 20 minutes, recording nine points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Newcomer Farnold Degand impressed in his first outing, posting five assists against a sole turnover in the opening half. The quick point guard finished up with eight points, six assists, two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal, with just two turnovers, in 28 minutes. Degand drilled all six of his free-throw attempts, in addition to showcasing impressive speed that will occasionally need to be slowed down. Coach Sidney Lowe said that Degand outran his teammates down the court at times, turning possible 4-on-1 opportunities into less-ideal one-on-one chances.

Ben McCauley played just 21 minutes, but he made the most of his time on the court, ending up with six points, four boards, five assists and a steal, hitting all three of his shot attempts. Trevor Ferguson served as Degand’s backup, notching two points, two assists and a turnover in 16 minutes of action, while Dennis Horner backed up Fells, registering four points, one rebound, three assists, a blocked shot, a steal and zero turnovers in 13 minutes.

Hickson admittedly rushed his shots in the early going. After his first attempt was resoundly swatted away by a weak-side defender, Hickson misfired on another shot before taking a transition pass from Horner and throwing down an emphatic two-handed jam while being fouled. Later on, he took an alley-oop pass from Horner and deftly laid it in on the break while falling out of bounds. The big man finished 5-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, adding five caroms and three steals in 17 minutes of action.

Following the contest, Lowe expressed concern about his team’s inability to stop dribble penetration, in addition to struggles keeping the feisty Barton team off the boards. Barton corralled 16 offensive rebounds, leading Lowe to suggest that his club would use the experience against a smaller team as a learning tool. He said that the Pack’s bigger players occasionally allowed the smaller Barton frontcourt players to simply run around their box-outs, giving them a lesson on moving their feet against shorter, quicker athletes.

After snapping Barton’s 21-game winning streak, NC State will next face UNC-Pembroke at the RBC Center on November 6 at 7 p.m.

All of those corporate LTR's really kill the sidelines for nonconference games. It is terrible game management that they don't at least let people downstairs after 10 minutes to fill empty seats. We are one of the few places boneheaded enough to have ushers strict on that, and the result is our arena looks empty on TV when the upper deck may be full.
