http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2007/02/02/a-view-from-the-cheap-seats-why-i-dont-hate-carolina/
Quote : | "I am a State fan. There is a plausible sincerity to these words, an earnestness that rings poetic.
To mention these words is to seemingly reveal your character, the very essence of your soul. It is shameless and self-affirming, an unabashed sense of pride about whom you are, perhaps a tad arrogant, however devoid of elitism. To state these words is to affirm that your loyalty is absolute and unwavering; you have laid claim to a title that commands respect because you are genuine – a flailing sense of dedication is not tolerated. There is a subtle swagger in the way you say it, a bluster that only another true State fan can ever entirely comprehend.
And still yet, as a State fan, you are not exactly teeming with bliss, but rather a desperate longing for satisfaction, appeasement. There exists within you an undeniable complexity, a dichotomy to your nature common among Wolfpack Nation. You are patient and forgiving and doggedly loyal to a fault, but you are marked by a looming forlornness of unfulfilled expectations and dashed hopes. Yet somehow you are decidedly resilient, having borne the stigma of the 90s and shunned any of its accompanying shame.
And of course, you hate Carolina; it’s inherent, a black or white issue: You cannot be a true State fan and have even the slightest inkling of any tolerance for the team O’er the Hill. That is undeniable, scientific fact.
I hate Carolina. There’s a solemn sincerity in these words as well, although they might not be quite as poetic. I hate them with such a fiery passion that I delight as much in a loss for them as I do a win for us. I so despise losing to them, that when we do, the trauma takes days off my life.
But do I even know why I hate them so much?
See, I don’t hate Carolina because the bastards are perpetual media darlings or because everyone gushes over their storied and hallowed tradition of excellence or because they had a legendary coach that unified them for decades or because they have won five (still counting as of today) national championships and 15 ACC titles.
I don’t hate the Well or the Bell or the supposed magnificent aura of the Dean E. Smith Center.
I don’t despise them for the fact that even when we are better than them they usually find a way to beat us or that Tyler Hansbrough never blinks nor fouls. I don’t wallow in the desperation of the fact that Ishua Benjamin always seems to get bumped out of bounds with less than a minute to play leading to a puzzling jump ball call or that there’s always a Jim Knight around to take points off the scoreboard at a crucial moment.
I don’t deplore them for hanging in the rafters the jersey of any player who ever plopped his sweaty ass on the bench and I could care less if they have a nationally-exposed, bitter, storied rivalry with Duke and act indifferent towards State.
I don’t hate their pseudo-elitist personas and I don’t hate the media-bias in favor of them from Manteo to Murphy.
I don’t hate that anywhere I’ve ever been I could find a Carolina hat (including, most recently, on the ski slopes of Italy) or that everyone that moves to North Carolina always cheers for them because of “how good they are.”
I don’t despise the fact that I cringe whenever someone says “Tar Heel State” and that when I’m governor someday my duties will require that I pretend to be proud and excited that they won a championship when the team visits the mansion while secretly I’d like to build a wall around Chapel Hill and fill it with water.
I don’t hate that Carolina fans have no idea what it’s like to endure true frustration because after two years of mediocrity they solved the problem.
I don’t hate them because we’ll never be close to where they are in basketball and will never consistently dominate them in football, yet we’re unwilling to ever accept that reality.
I don’t hate Carolina for any of the aforementioned trivial reasons.
Wait, that’s precisely why I hate them.

Rivalry needs prize J. Andrew Curliss, Staff Writer It has been played longer than the Backyard Brawl (Pittsburgh-West Virginia) and the Red River Shootout (Texas-Oklahoma). It's more intense than the Apple Cup (Washington-Washington State) or the Black and Blue Bowl (Memphis-Southern Mississippi).
And the universities are closer in proximity than those in the Iron Bowl (Alabama-Auburn), the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (Florida-Georgia), or the Duel in the Desert (Arizona-Arizona State).
But the North Carolina-N.C. State football game has no name -- and no trophy.
Athletics officials at both schools say they are unaware of any moniker for the rivalry or any type of trophy for the winner.
Duke-Carolina has the Victory Bell, as do numerous other rivalries; Michigan and Minnesota has the Little Brown Jug; Indiana and Purdue play for the Old Oaken Bucket -- even Cincinnati and Lousiville play for a Keg of Nails.
The Kansas-Kansas State Sunflower Showdown is one of many played for a governor's cup. (A spokesman for Gov. Mike Easley, Seth Effron, agreed there's no gubernatorial trophy for the champ here.)
Indeed, dozens of games across the nation rise to enough of a rivalry to involve some kind of special title and trophy. Teams all over are in battles, wars, brawls and showdowns not just to hoist jugs, buckets and bells but also boots, shoes, pipes, cups and all sorts of other hardware.
North Carolina, of course, is a part of the Oldest Rivalry in the South (with Virginia) already, though don't confuse it with the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (Auburn-Georgia).
And N.C. State plays the Textile Bowl with Clemson, a nod to the schools' similar missions, complete with a Textile Bowl trophy.
Given the state's status as a barbecue mecca and a major pork producer, one trophy that might fit the State-Carolina meeting is a "Slab of Bacon" for the team that best brings it home. But that's been done: Minnesota and Wisconsin used to play for it as part of their "Border Battle." When that trophy was lost in the early 1940s, the schools started playing for Paul Bunyan's Axe, now held high by the winning team each year.
It might seem obvious to call this Carolina Clash the I-40 Feud.
But there are plenty of other highway games out there -- the Battle of I-25 (New Mexico-New Mexico State), the Battle of I-75 (Toledo-Bowling Green) and the War on I-4 (Central Florida-South Florida) among them. 11/7/2007 1:49:21 PM |

Quote : | "Perhaps the Gameday crew will mention it in passing Saturday morning. Otherwise, I expect the most coverage The Biggest Game of the Year will garner nationally will be when its score scrolls across the bottom of other games. After all, it’s just a little backyard rivalry that will certainly never matter like the Red Sox-Yankees or Ohio State-Michigan, and it could never possibly register on the scale of Colts-Patriots.
C’mon, let’s be honest: it doesn’t even matter to the ACC race. The undeniable fact is that an overwhelming majority of Americans won’t know this game is even being played and wouldn’t care if they did.
But that’s fine; I understand completely.
Because the truth is, I couldn’t give a rat’s hindquarters what the overwhelming majority of Americans think about this game, and I won’t waste my time arguing its merits as an intense, important rivalry because I couldn’t care less to whom else it’s important.
See, for those of us who were born in little places called Moravian Falls or grew up in Iron Station or Elm City, and for those of us that have lived in Asheville or Wilmington or anywhere in between, and for those of us that draw battle lines depending upon whether real barbeque is Lexington-style or Eastern-style – just so we’re clear: I’m a born and bred Westerner but I can assure you when The Great Pork War breaks out I’m siding with Wilber’s because Eastern-style is the only true pig fit for pickin’ – and especially for those of that have had our classes in Mann or Riddick Hall interrupted by the rumbling by of a passing train, we know precisely what this game means.
It’s so much bigger than any other game ESPN could possibly shove down our throats any given Saturday. Sure, in a few weeks I’ll watch Ohio State play Michigan and Auburn play Alabama, because I’m a fan of college football (particularly SEC football) and I enjoy watching good games. But I have no vestment in which of those teams wins, because I’m a State fan, which invariably means I hate Carolina.
Let me elaborate: I despise Carolina with every last ounce of passion I can muster; actually, I hate the whole principle of Carolina. In fact, it’s probably sinful how much I wholly detest them.
But without Carolina to hate, what’s the point? At the most basic level, that’s really what it’s all about to a State fan, right?
Every hero requires a villain and every rivalry must be fueled off some common ground, so no matter how much we might loathe them, we can’t deny they’re a part of our lives. We’ve sat at the Thanksgiving dinner table with them, in the pew beside them, in the office next to them. We’ve developed lifelong friendships with them and even been in their weddings. And for every one of us that has introduced a friend and quickly annotated it with “He’s a Carolina fan – but he’s still an ok guy,” we’ll be battling Saturday for the coveted opportunity to make that post-game gloating phone call; most likely we’ll get their voicemail, which is actually all that much sweeter, because it’s like an extra turn of the dagger.
And that really is what it’s all about, right? We all know it’s much more fun to make that call than it is to receive it; it’s an unadulterated, blissful moment. And until you’ve either made that call or suffered through it, how can you ever truly understand what this game means?
So ESPN can have Ohio State-Michigan – I could care less who wins that game.
Because I’m a State fan and it really is this simple: Go to hell Carolina!" |
