"bullshit. Those two at-large slots would ALWAYS go to BCS schools. Once again, you'd guarantee that only BCS schools get a shot at the chance, and you again say that the other conferences are worthless"

It'll never happen, but here's my "perfect world" idea I came up with.

-The current conferences for purposes of football are abolished.
-4 regional conferences are setup: East, South, Midwest, and West. Every team is assigned to one of these four conferences based purely on geography. This has about 30 teams in each conference.
-Setup three 9-team or 10-team divisions in each conference. There will be the top (or first) tier, middle (or second) tier, and bottom (or third) tier.
-You will play every team in your division or tier.
-How the system works is that the teams in the top tier will compete for the national championship. The champions of the first tier in the East, South, Midwest, and West will go into a 4-team playoff to compete for the national championship.
-At the end of the season, the champions of the second tier will be promoted to the first tier, and the bottom-finishing team of the first tier will be demoted to the second tier. Same sort of team transfer will happen between the second tier and third tier. Who is promoted and based entirely on record in the tier. This is how most sports leagues across the world are setup, most notably European soccer.
-There will be enough games leftover that if schools want to play rivalry games either inter-tier or inter-geographic conference, they still can.

^ I understand most people would not. But I am 100% confident in saying that under this current system, NC State will never win a national championship in football, nor be allowed to try. This system that we are currently in is setup to give the greatest advantage to about 10 teams to try and let only one of them win every year.

Can you come up with a better system? I'd just assume go back to the old "set bowl system" with no national title game and the Mythical National Championship than this s*** now. At least it would not be claiming it's something it's not.

Two things shouldn't happen.

1) A team who didn't even win their own division in their conference should NOT play for a NC.

2) A team who lost by 41 points to a team with the same record should not be selected over them. You can whine all you want about Va Tech being a different team now but this wasn't just a loss, it was a complete and utter annihilation over 60 minutes.

Obviously, Kansas and Hawaii shouldn't be selected, so that leaves LSU and Ohio State... and that is a good game.

*** or you can go the route of OU and say w/o no Bradford injury they are 12-1 right now and would be in...

^ It also leaves Southern Cal and Oklahoma.

This really shows one of the flaws of college football. The best teams don't play each other. VT is being automatically eliminated (by me) cause they got killed by LSU. Imagine if they never played, this would be even more of a quagmire. The NCAA allowed them to play a 12th regular season game, grow a pair and schedule hard opponents for once. Who's the better team between Oklahoma and LSU? I don't know.

I just wish there was an objective system where you could put all the numbers in and two teams come out. If it's completely objective it will be incredibly hard to complain that one team got shafted and we won't have to listen to coaches bitch and moan for their chance to play in the championship game, last year Urban Meyer this year Bob Stoops.

According to one of the computer rankings, Sagarin, Virginia Tech is its #1.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt07.htm (BCS ranking is on far right, its different from the listed ranking)

the first paragraph, is grossly incorrect. if nc state was undefeated this season, they would play for the mnc. mizzou or kansas or south florida are no bigger football powers than state, and they all would've gotten the chance had they not blown it.

i agree w/ the second paragraph. i dislike the mnc and would much prefer just having prestigious bowls. and only prestigious bowls. no fucking car care or boise or any of that.

^, ^^ This year is an anomoly. It's a once-every-blue moon phenomenon. And NC State going undefeated is looking like it will be a once-every-Halley's Comet phenomenon. So I don't like the odds of those ever coinciding.

If LSU or some big school like them went 12-1 this year, and Kansas or South Florida went undefeated this year, you'd think LSU would not leapfrog them? It's solely cause Kansas and South Florida are not established powers and sportswriters and coaches would hum and haw about "do we really want Kansas in the title game?" I'm a big State fan, but I understand others' impressions of our position in the college football universe, and we'd get treated the same way.

if you throw away the PC "winning margin doesn't count" bullshit, it's:

1 Oklahoma
2 Florida
3 tOSU
4 WVU

and any result which screws tOSU is a result I can get behind

^ Looking at it, Georgia only got just barely passed by Oklahoma.

My point is that NC State will be looked down upon because they're NC State, even if they do well, and will get passed over because of it. If we finish with an 0, an instance like this season where there would be only one other BCS team with 1 loss or less pre-bowls has no precedent at all and I would not think it would be a common recurrence.

Virginia Tech vs. OSU for national title

va tech beat a higher ranked team for their conference championship than LSU did.

it doesn't matter that LSU beat VT earlier in the year...that was too early

well the bcs voters say they like to look at how a team ended instead of how it started
in that respect, VT ended better

i'd rather see an ACC team than SEC team

im not reading this whole thread but you should have to win your conference to get to the national championship game in the BCS system

now a playoff, take the conference champions from the power conferences and 6 at large teams

1-4 get a bye the first week and then you have 4 weeks of playoffs total

fill up the month off that they have

why? i think Va Tech is good and could compete in the NC, but other than them I don't care to watch a shitty ACC team play in any bowl game really. it would be a travesty to not have the SEC represented in the title game. OSU vs. LSU

How about the SEC champ automatically goes to the championship game and we set up a playoff where everyone has to fight for the honor of playing the SEC team. Even then there is no point in playing the game other than to see the SEC full of really really fast people whip up on the slow dumb guys on the other team who don't even know how to play football.

^^^^there's reason why the SEC gets so much hype...BECAUSE THEY ARE CLEARLY THE MOST TALENTED CONFERENCE from top to bottom. they beat everyone outside of conference then beat up on each other during the in-conference schedule. i don't know how anyone who watches college football week-to-week can dispute the quality of play in the SEC

i think once the old guard of Directors and fans start losing their pull we'll see a playoff system put into effect soon there after.

i am still finding it hard to believe you put tOSU in there against LSU after the BCS shot their load on Georgia and now will have them jumped by a conference foe?

and what about VT? they won their title game, why cant they leap a idle tOSU?

tonight is going to be the highest rated show on Fox since they killed Ma Flanders.

The big ten thing was just a joke, and I was not meaning to suggest that they are the best conference by any means. I agree with everyone else in the world that the SEC is probably the best conference, but they are not some unstoppable completely dominant force. They have a .500 record against ooc BCS opponents. I just don't think it will be a "travesty" if an SEC team doesn't play for the NC, there are good football teams outside that conference.

Just imagine if Michigan had beaten Wiscy and ohio thtate. They would be in the talk.

Of course, they'd have no business being in the NC, but under this system they'd still certainly be in the discussion.
