I have to say I despise THE Ohio State more than the Patriots or Yankees. Regardless of Bill Belichick being a cheating cocky SOB, randy moss a money grubbing cry baby, and the yankees padding up their bullpen to prevent other teams from having the top stars; at least both of these teams have to work hard through the post season in order to make it to the legitimate championship game.
the Ohio State just sucks lots of cock, gets a favorable number vomited out of some retarded computer program (that can be tweaked allowing easy biasing) and some favorable voting by the AP poll. 12/3/2007 2:25:36 PM |

I dont really understand what you are trying to get at here, I think that the parity in the NCAA is why the BCS looks so bad, any team can lose to another on any given day. If anything I would say that there is more parity in the NCAA than in the NFL. In college, players only play for a school for a limited amount of time, if a school has a bad recruiting season or loses a lot of players to the NFL or graduation they can EASILY go from a top team to a bottom feeder.
Whereas in the NFL there is less room for parity since players sign long term contracts with a particular team and can build a dynasty.
Just because a college team is better at recruiting and can successfully field great players year in and year out (OSU, USC, LSU, etc.), it doesnt mean that the BCS isnt working.
^and that post is just fucking stupid. Ohio State plays just as many games during the season as anyone else, and they do it without taking multiple bye weeks off like most other major programs. It isnt their fault that the Big Ten doesnt have a championship game, they won the games they were supposed to and put themselves in a position to play in the national championship. They were #3 last week in all the polls (with only ONE loss), so when the #1 and #2 teams lose it makes a little bit of sense that they would move up.
quit being a crybaby about it, WVU and Mizzou shouldnt have lost this past weekend.

I honestly don't get the Ohio State hate. It's not their fault the Big 10 hasn't been very good recently. Tressell seems like he is a classy guy, other than Clarett they haven't had any assholes playing for them and their fanbase is really cool... I've never been treated as well at a road game as I was in Columbus..
They were far, far better than the trash at VTech...
V Ohio State is one of a select few top level programs that will actually go on the road to play elites (SC, Auburn and Texas are a few others). They played at Texas last year, will play at SC next year. The shitty OOC schedule this year was just an abberation.

Their OOC this year was abysmal, but it certainly isn't that way every year. The previous two years they had home and away's with Texas and the next two years they will do the same thing with USC, both almost yearly top ten teams recently. In the recent past Washington would have been a respectable OOC team, and while that doesn't do anything for them this year it's not like they knew washington would be bad this year when they were scheduled.12/3/2007 4:32:47 PM |

maybe next year the NFL will have a NFL SuperBowl Championship Series. How FUN and EXCITING! A computer geek paid by ESPN would create a program that would input the SOS, record, and other various factor to determine the "Official" ranking of every NFL team.
Tournaments are drawn out and boring! You never know when your team could be favored then because of a rainy day blow the entire season with an upset in the 1st round of the post season. Good news with the new system they'll automatically be in the championship game, no post-season upsets to worry about! As an added bonus those of us from america's favorite cities i.e NYC, Chicago, NO may benefit from the voting biases as done in the NCAA as to who "deserves" to be in the super bowl Championship game 12/3/2007 4:34:09 PM |

unless something changes, the OOC schedule for tOSU over the next 5 years is a fucking joke. They don't leave Ohio for most of it, and play nobody legitimate.
The hate comes from the fact that they play a shit schedule, and then ruin the championship game when they come out and get their asses kicked by UF.
They better give LSU a fucking game after their schedule this year and backing into the NC. 12/3/2007 5:13:46 PM |

yes, i grasp this. but the nfl is not the same at all as the ncaa, you can't hypothetically apply the bcs to the nfl as evidence that the bcs needs changing.

I didn't read much of this, but I skimmed it to find if people were mentioning SOS you did. I think this is the key that is breaking the BCS these days, de-emphasizing it. Surely they can look at the past 5 years...hell, as far back as they really want to go, and come up with a model that has a 90%, 95%, 98%...whatever...confidence metric that the best 2 teams are the ones that get to play in the NC.
And yes, there may very well be some situations where there are 3 teams that could be picked, but at least then the BCS folks can say look...the model is pretty damn good over the past 30-50 years and it's just tough that your team is the one that got screwed. 12/3/2007 5:21:13 PM |

the big ten is typically a pretty strong conference (not as good as sec obviously, but pretty strong). plus factor in that OOC schedules are made several years in advance, so its hard to foresee your conference foes sucking. plus, at the rate parity is infecting college football, a pansy like akron could turn into a bcs buster almost overnight (see rutgers, usf, louisville, cincinnati, uconn). i can't really fault them for scheduling cupcakes.
that said, i still hate them 12/3/2007 7:17:24 PM |

To be fair to whoever said that, UConn is a unique situation. Their athletic program basically redefined the entire school. UConn2000 along with the latest redevelopment plan was made possible nearly solely by the athletic program. The UConn basketball teams have made the entire university better. It is now the #1 public university in New England and the #64 university in the entire country (where previously it was never in the Top 100) via US News & World Reports.
Because of this and the wealth of the Connecticut based alums, the state has not been reluctant to dump loads of $$$$ into the athletic, and more specifically, the football program. The state paid for all the infrastructure and the actual stadium itself in E. Hartford... The new football complex/athletic studies building was paid entirely by CT based donors.
Most schools wouldn't be able to do that in such a short time. There simply isn't a) a big enough donor pool at a lot of private universities to make that happen; and b) a state willing spend so much on behalf of the athletic department.
Quote : | "Those won't stay like that, they never do." |
I'm sort of interested in why you would say that? There haven't been, to my knowledge, any instances of the absolute elite programs backing out of marquee games. Yeah, Louisville got out of us and we got out of a game with... I think UConn... but that was under special circumstances (conference realignment)...

Don't say "I'm getting picky". I haven't followed this thread closely and was the one trying to make a point about their OOC schedule being weak. I was just pointing out that tOSU isn't going to be dumb and schedule a real team late in the year to interfere with their well rehearsed plan (and others may have mentioned it) which is to usually play a soft OOC (one "big" power still doesn't mean it isn't soft), beat the only team they need to (usually UM), thwart the current year Big Ten team doing slightly better than the others (from MSU, IU, WU, PSU, etc) if they have to play them at all, and avoid a conference championship game which could ruin everything (ask Mizzou how they feel about that?).
The flip side of that is, in a year like this where they don't look like the clear cut deserving team, beating a final year top 5/10 early in the year (and convincingly) would make the decision more clear. But under the current BCS, it's just better to leave that game unplayed, or worst case not have it hurt you so much if you lose it.
