amedeo's food was ok, but not wonderful, especially for the price. the booths and tables were very crowded and you can get better italian food other places for less. not a good combination to stay in business. 1/19/2008 2:43:42 PM |

bella monica is the best italian in raleigh imo. their lasagna is the best i've had by leaps and bounds.
amadeo's is good. it's not bad, it's not great, but good. it's the papa lou's of italian. it's not going to blow you away, it's not going to rip you off, it's just going to be mediocre. mediocre doesn't cut it when there are tons of other dining options. 1/19/2008 4:21:36 PM |

Amedeo's was never that impressive to me, maybe as good as Olive Garden on a good day.
If you want killer Italian and don't mind driving a little ways try
http://www.carlocasalinga.net/
Its up Capitol Blvd a little ways, service is awesome, food is amazing.
I've been there 3 or 4 times, never a disappointment. 1/19/2008 6:02:41 PM |

always went there a couple of times each semester, including having big get-togethers for different organizations i was in. always loved the food, and of course all the ncsu stuff on the walls. will be sad if its closed the next time i make it back to raleigh 1/20/2008 7:00:57 AM |

I second Bella Monica
but really, Amedeo's is a completely different level of restaurant. I agree that the quality of food and service is mediocre, but for about $8 a head, it ain't bad. 1/20/2008 10:21:59 AM |

I don't care if it is a 'landmark' or whatever. If you want to have a successful business on a college campus, you have to cater to the clientèle, which in this case, are mostly young students without a ton of money to spend on some overpriced wannabe Italian food. It amazes me that the place made it this long. Lower prices to a more reasonable $6-8 *tops* rather than bare minimum, and they might see some improvement, but for now they will only have the few dedicated consumers that hang on for the nostalgic value.1/21/2008 4:11:33 PM |

Yeah, I have a good handful of friends who recreationally use blow...but they are sorta levelheaded about it. But the things I've heard from folks in the know suggest that John D and company might have a little bit more of an issue with it.
Seems the legacies are the ones that always fuck it all up and lose it all. Seems I heard my dad in a screaming rant telling me that I was running his business into the fucking ground about 8 years ago when I was a friggin' drunk sportfuckin' ass-off.
Quote : | "I blame the management. How else do you run a place with regular clientele and decent prices into the ground? I bet if you looked at their books they are a mess." |
See above reasons.
BTW, the one in North Raleigh is run by another brother and isn't tied to the one on Western.

sad but doesn't surprise me. I had a feeling this would happen when John D's brother opened up the North Raleigh Amedeos. The brothers are very different!
I've always liked Amedeos but more for the atmosphere and because I knew a lot of the staff. The lasagna and ravioli and some other items are great. It's certainly not the best Italian I've had but good. (I married into a huge Italian family)
John D had cleaned up his act last time I saw him but it's been a while. He's a really nice guy but does party a lot though.
shrug. I really hope they don't close. It would be a shame and a lot of people would be disappointed. 2/6/2008 3:10:37 PM |

Honestly, I don't think the food was that great. And as many other people have said, it's overpriced. Given that a lot of italian food is overpriced.....most of the time the food makes up for it. 2/11/2008 9:19:57 AM |

I may get shit for mentioning this, but the Rathskeller in Chapel Hill shut down a couple months ago. For good this time.
Supposedly a few dudes bought up a lot of the memorabilia and whatnot on the hopes that they may reopen it one day.
I was into their lasagna. House dressing was delicious.
I stopped going there a while ago cause it was getting too depressing.

I haven't eaten there in quite some time. When I saw this thread I decided I would give it another chance. I brought my roommate who has never been there. I told him it was an NC State institution, and he had to eat there at least once.
I WAS WRONG! The service was awful. People that were seated long after us were being served. appetizers took forever to come out(~35 min). Main course came out shortly thereafter. The food was mediocre at best. Took forever to get the bill. I just wanted to get the hell out.
Good Riddance, replace that hole with a Kinko's or Starbucks. 2/12/2008 10:52:29 AM |

Has it gotten that bad in the past 2.5 years??
I went there fairly often during my last couple years at state ('05 grad) and usually got adequate service and adequate food. I never went in there expecting the best Italian food or 5-star service...but I definitely never left disappointed. And their food was usually pretty good.
Pizza was also pretty awesome, and the little pub on the side was a great place to watch a State game. 2/12/2008 12:36:27 PM |

Screw Amedeo's. Seriously, $15 for their chicken parm? It's not like Amedeo's is a classy Italian restaurant. It's a dump with NCSU pictures on the walls bordering the Western Blvd ghetto. If I wanted to sit in a dumpy restaurant I'd rather go to 2 Guys for 1/2 the price.
For the same money I'd rather sit in a nicer restaurant like Piccola Italia or 518. (Not that 518 is great Italian, but the atmosphere beats the shit out of Amedeo's) 2/12/2008 12:42:14 PM |

I've been there once. We waited half an hour for drinks, and 45 minutes for food after we ordered. It was the worst spagetti I have ever had. How do you screw that up? I complained about how awful it was, then she handed me the check and walked away. I had barely eaten half if that.
Never went back. 2/13/2008 8:31:52 AM |
