Hopefully we all remember what happened the last time that they did this.

Arabs crashed planes into the world trade center.

i would think its gross. i cant imagine why the government would give money to someone who makes enough to still have 75k after all the deductions out there

but this is so silly i guess it could be either

God damnit, I'm gonna get screwed for being a dependent last year.

My parents better cough up the 300 they are gonna make off of me.

last year i got the $1000 my parents would have gotten off claiming me as a dependent.

my mom wanted to claim it was theirs, but since it was going towards my HONEYMOON she decided to call it a "gift." if she was joking (which she probably was), i wasn't laughing. i was working 2 jobs in graduate school for that.

Yeah I've been working for like 6 years now, and the first time I ever got money back was last year. Something like 12 dollars. Since my parents have investments in my name, I think I lose any refund to capital gains offsets.

Oh well, I guess a free college education and rent is an okay trade off.

this is why affiliating yourself with a party makes you look like an idiot

people who didnt work arent getting them. actually, if i heard right, the democrats actually folded and gave up what they wanted (more food stamps and longer unemployment benefts) in order to get something passed.

a tax rebate for everyone to pay off their debt that came from living outside their means. the people who could use money for things like.... electricity... arent getting shit

thats why i feel guilty about getting something. plus the government is about to burn off 150 billion bucks after the republicans just blasted hillary and obamas incentive plans because of the 100+ billion price tags

shit is stupid.

My folks and I duked it out last year. Technically, they shouldn't have claimed me as a dependent, because I wasn't even living at home for any part of the year, but they did, and we went back and forth over it for several weeks. I think there was $600 at stake? We were both coming out about the same amount ahead, so I let them claim me, and give me $300.

I called up my mom last week to make sure they had no such delusions this year.

They should do Visa/MC debit cards with the persons name on them. Then you'd have to use them like they hope you would.

i say during those years of transition from being a dependent to becoming independent when your parents are trying to claim you, you should let them.

seriously. bitching with your parents over 300 bucks after they've spent thousands and thousands and thousands on you over the years? because you had some part time job one year and you want your 300 bucks.

kids these days!

That's actually not a bad idea. They couldn't possibly give that much business to any one company, but don't they have electronic cards for the WIC program? They could figure something out.

Except $300k a year. Meaning in the top 2% of income in the US. Yeah, he gets nothing

I'm sure people who actually make that much are crying on the lapels of their Armani suits right now because they won't get a government check that would maybe pay for an oil change for their Mercedes.

hahahaha...In the years they could, I did let them claim me. The first year that they couldn't legally claim me, I had no reason to think they would try to claim me. For us, it's not at all muddy where that line is.

ambrosia, didnt you say somewhere that you made like 6k that year? and [i'm assuming here] paying tuition? which probably took up most of that 6k?

did you live anywhere? did you eat?

you must have been someones dependent...

^nothing wrong with being a brat if you admit it, really. but acting like someone owes you something. just the years of diaper changes and asswiping alone has got to be enough for the parents to win the argument. ahah

I live with my bf. He can't claim me because I'm not his child; otherwise, he would. The are three rules to be met to claim someone over 18 as your dependent: they must receive at least half of their support from you for the year, they must be your child, and I never paid attention to the third because one of these two has been in the way.

Quote :
"just the years of diaper changes and asswiping alone has got to be enough for the parents to win the argument."

Nah...it wasn't quite like that. It went more like
"Uh...yall claimed me when you shouldn't have. I was kinda looking forward to that money"
"Oops. Well, you know how your dad is about doing shit in a timely manner"
"So..."
"We'll split it with you, how's that"

the back-and-forth was them not believing me when I told them they couldn't legally claim me.

smart. this is probably the best thing most Americans could do, use it to pay down debt. They won't though.

yeah, i didn't mind them claiming me as a dependent when i was an undergrad and they were footing the bill to cover tuition and rent.

but when i was out of school and covering my own graduate school/medical/etc bills AND getting married, it was time for me to reap any of the small benefits i could.

Not really. It'd be more tempting, sure, but if a $600 debit card showed up in my mailbox rather than a $600 check, all I'd do is throw $600 more from that month's paycheck directly to the credit card bill, and pay some bills/day-to-day living expenses off that debit card until it was spent.

I thought this was funny, from page 1:

"right into my savings account

fuck you economy"

Putting it into a savings account increases a bank's assets, which increases the money supply (thanks to the voodoo magic of fractional reserve banking) and increases the amount it can lend. If you want to fuck the economy, keep the hard cash at home like I do.

Why should it matter how much someone makes or not? Someone who makes $300k can spend their $300 refund just as easy as some guy who makes $10k a year.

And sure, the people who make that much probably won't miss $300, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. Not only are wealthy people taxed a larger percentage of their income, the government won't let them participate in this "stimulus program"? Bull. Shit.

I'll be in for $1500 since my wife and I had our daughter last year (I think). It may be only $1200 since my daughter was not on my 2006 tax return. Either way, I am happy and this $$ will be going to pay down more on my wife's car loan.
