NYC PIZZA CANNOT BE MADE OUTSIDE OF NYC

they have like 10,000 places. and maybe 100 good ones?

^^ you can get close taste-wise... and like I said, New Haven has better pizza. Pepes is the best pizza in the entire country.

^ seconded on both. Randy's in RTP was good for lunch and I used to get Bella Italia in Wake Forest back when my parents lived in Wakefield...

yall missed the boat on pizza in raleigh. it aint mellow, ruckus, amedeos, randys, cinellis, i love ny, sylvias, lillys, milanos, wildflour, miltons, rudinos, capital creations, pizza hut. i've tried em all. i like all of em cause i like pizza.

but, nobody in raleigh/cary/wake county can touch:

franks pizza - in the hood across from enloe, been there for 30 yrs (take a gun).

grande street pizza - in the hood next to walmart in knightdale, been there 7 yrs (take a knife).

those 2 are the best. it's tough eating at the other places once you eat at those 2

i can't lie

the only places where i've been disappointed in the pizza were Wildflour and Amedeo's.

I pretty much like every other pizza spot in Raleigh.

Wildflour cannot be more overrated.

I wonder if people will ever realize that the name of the chain is in fact "New York Pizza," and the "I Heart" portion is merely the chain slogan.

there is some great fucking pizza in raleigh, but i'd put it at "tier 3". there isn't enough gourmet pizza, or truly unique style/toppings. also, i can't think of a good place to get a good chicago deep dish.

but who wants 'unique' toppings?

the furthest i want to go for a unique topping would be adding ricotta to a hawaiian pizza. and that's not that out there.

^^I agree. While Raleigh has good pizza, it is by no means a great pizza town. Those who think so either have no taste for great pizza, or have really never ventured out of the southeast. My money is on the latter. Way to many people seem to find themselves perfectly content with their surroundings and dont realize there is a lot more out there that America has to offer.

it's like going to the movies. some people want to know what's going to happen and enjoy going to see a predictable movie. others want to be wowed and to not be able to predict the ending. thus, i believe that it is a matter of taste, not necessarily a matter of whether or not the person is well traveled or open minded.

whatever. fried chicken pizza and scrambled eggs pizza pork chop pizza all that unique shit is not pizza. just because raleigh doesnt have good not pizza doesn't mean its not a great pizza town. anything without tomato sauce is not pizza(with the few exceptions of alfredo/nywhite). any toppings that are previously seasoned are not pizza toppings.

i think grande street is pretty bad. theres a pizza place in the new knightdale shopping center thats on point. "slice of new york" the owener is straight out of queens.

franks i heard was once good but it definately has an old mildewy aftertaste. grande street is definately not "the hood"

When I came home to the States I made sure to eat at Lilly's. I love their pizza.

I also like that place on Harrison Ave. in Cary. I don't remember what it's called but they have these spinach pizza wraps things that are tasty. I used to get those sometimes when I worked near there.

Schiano's Pizza in NW Raleigh used to have kick ass calzones, but then they got bought out and started sucking

believe it or not, the pizzas they sell at subway, the ones that come prepackaged and they just rip the plastic off of them are fucking AMAZING. you put whatever you want on them and they cook in about 90 seconds and the crust is crispy and everyhing. get a pepperoni with mushrooms and green peppers and have them cover it with slices of tomato... and then have them add another layer of cheese before they toss it in there.

Take her to Sylvia's, use all the condiments on the table. Red round flakes as well. (I'm only citing my grandfather, used to embarass my dad by asking for reinforcement red pepper in the NY pizza joints.) Be sure you can get your hands on some garlic and onion pepper - if you can't, ask the owner (he's Sicilian, he'll understand, we are spice addicts).

I would say we are not specifically a pizza town, when I hear pizza I think New York City or Chicago (those are great pizza town's, raleigh has many good pizza places that put us pretty high on the list).

I would have to rate us higher than most "other" major cities for pizza (raleigh being a tier 2 rating in my opinion).

NYC has an insane amount of shitty pizza. Also the majority of the "famous" pizza places are hated by locals because their touristy pieces of shit. Grimaldi's is good but many people hate it because 90% of the people inside are from the midwest. Also, Lombardi's is soggy shit.

The whole concept of a certain area having better "blank" because of a historical concept is completely retarded. Theres a pizza place in a strip mall in concord, NC thats run by Italians who moved from the Bronx a couple years ago. The pizza is awesome and far better than all of the shitty pizza places in NYC run by mexicans.

Mellow Mushroom >> Lilly's

I went to Lilly's a couple of months ago and the yuppies had to be there to be seen because it sure as hell wasn't because the pizza is good. And having a bunch of dusty junk/memorabilia tossed around the place does not make it hip--it just makes it cluttered and hard to clean.

BTW, an employee at Lilly's that night was yelling like 20 times for some fucker named "CHUCK!" to come get his pizza--he never did. That was fucking annoying and the place is ridiculously loud anyway.

I know several people who live in Five Points that won't even eat at Lilly's--and it's a block away. What does that tell you?

town? no. city.

and i havent found any place that "wows" me that much more than some chains ive been to. if you cant beat the collective force of pizza hut, dominos and papa johns, then you arent much to speak of. sure ive had better pizza, but i havent had anything that really stood out as being that much better than a chain.

Jeno's is better than everything else, and I've been to every pizza restaurant in a 100 mile radius of raleigh.

you just can't beat 5 pizzas for four dollar bucks.
