Quote :
""Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment in the blockbuster film franchise about boy wizard Harry, is moving from its planned Nov. 21 release to July 17, 2009, distributor Warner Bros. said Thursday.

The move was made to take advantage of an open weekend in Hollywood's busy summer season, said Alan Horn, Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer. The film had been on schedule, and the change was not due to any production snags, he said.

"The picture is completely, absolutely, 100 percent on schedule, on time. There were no delays," Horn told The Associated Press. "I've seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November."

The switch will mean a two-year lag between the film adaptations of books five and six in J.K. Rowling's fantasy series. But it will shorten fans' wait between "Half-Blood Prince" and the final two installments, which are being shot simultaneously next year.

Based on book seven, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last two movies are due out in close order, in November 2010 and summer 2011. Horn said the later release of "Half-Blood Prince" will not affect the schedule for the final two movies.

Horn said the studio has had success with past summer "Harry Potter" releases, including the fifth movie, which was released in 2007 and became the second-highest grossing in the franchise.

The recent Writers Guild of America strike also had affected Hollywood's lineup in next summer, leaving a key date open for Warner to slot in "Half-Blood Prince," Horn said.

The July 17 release will be over the same weekend that Warner debuted this year's blockbuster "The Dark Knight," which had a record-breaking opening weekend and is on its way to $500 million domestically and the No. 2 spot on the all-time box-office charts behind "Titanic."

"Half-Blood Prince" finds Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) returning to his wizard classes with a clandestine assignment to root out dark secrets about the early years of his archenemy, the dark Lord Voldemort.

The film is directed by David Yates, who made the fifth movie and also is shooting the final two.

Last February, another big Hollywood film, Paramount's "Star Trek," was bumped from a December release to May 8, 2009. Paramount executives said that move also was intended to take advantage of an open weekend in the summer lineup."

**Real reason why it got bumped.**

That's not much of a reason. The real story? Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will be right in the middle of his sensational, highly publicized run on Broadway in the play, "Equus." Radcliffe appears naked in the play, on stage, and has sex in it as well. That's not the image Warner Bros. wants associated with bespectacled Harry, who remains chaste and virginal.

Indeed, posters for Equus are up all over New York, of Radcliffe's naked torso superimposed on a horse's head. This is not the sort of thing that's taught at Hogwarts. For the movie to open on Nov. 21, Radcliffe would have to do publicity entailing answering questions about blinding horses and having sex with them vs. flying around and making potions.

Warner Bros. does not want this scenario. By the time "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" debuts, "Equus" will either have concluded its run or Radcliffe will have completed his contract. And there will be little mention of any horsing around.

It's updated to reflect the new movie. The trailer, synopsis and photo gallery are up so far. Yay!

Oh, and official message on moving the movie date:
Quote :
"Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between "Half-Blood Prince" and the much-anticipated first part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for "Half-Blood Prince," the wait from that film until "Deathly Hallows" will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

Alan Horn
President, Chief Operating Officer
Warner Bros."

Translation. We'll make more money by moving it later and all you idiots that are writing us letters will go see it then anyway.

Oh, and pushing the date will make it so you won't have to wait as long on the next movie... unless we push the date back on that one too.

Meh. I didn't think that the HBP was that good of a book anyway.

Oh yeah...That trailer is nice....The last 30 mins or so...should be awesome. This has got me so hyped again. The extra was a pretty stupid move. Hope they do not cut too much...they need to stretch the scenes and hit everything.

Are the characters of Rufus Scrimgeour, the Dursleys, Bill Weasley, Fleur Delacour and the Gaunts in this movie?
Quote :
"Rufus Scrimgeour, Bill Weasley, Fleur Delacour, the Gaunts, and the Dursleys are confirmed to have been omitted. Of course, with the omission of new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, comes the omission of the book's opening. This has been replaced in the movie by an attack on the Millennium Bridge by Death Eaters. An attack on a bridge was mentioned in the first chapter of the book, an attack ordered by Lord Voldemort as punishment for Cornelius Fudge's refusal to submit to blackmail."

Why is Katie Bell in the class when she is meant to be in the year above Harry, and why is Romilda Vane there when she is meant to be TWO YEARS below him?
Quote :
"As we all know, certain aspects of a story are subject to change when a story is adapted for the big screen. As we have not yet met the character of Katie Bell as portrayed by Georgina Leonidas (the character had previously been portrayed, if unnoticeably, by Emily Dale in the first two films) or her friend Leanne in the films, it appears the filmmakers saw fit to bring her into Harry's classes so we get to know her better before Katie is cursed by the opal necklace. It is the same situation for Romilda Vane Anna Shaffer, who is two years below Harry but who becomes important when she tries to slip Harry a love potion via chocolates which Ron accidentally eats."

Is it true that the fight scene at the end of the book has been cut from the film?
Quote :
"This is true to an extent. The fighting that goes on between the teachers, Dumbledore's Army, the Order and the Death Eaters in the background has been cut, however, virtually everything else that happens in those chapters in the book happens in the movie. "

Which flashbacks to Voldemort's past will be in the movie?
Quote :
"It has been revealed that only two memories (three, if you count the tampered and untampered memories as separate) will be shown in the film. The first one of a young Tom Riddle learning that he is a wizard, the second being the tampered memory of Horace Slughorn, and the third being the memory Slughorn provides Harry with, which has not been tampered with. The Gaunts, Hepzibah Smith and Tom Riddle's Defence Against the Dark Arts teaching post request are all confirmed to have been omitted. "

What the...

That was one of the better parts of this book, really. I'd rather them have left it all in there.

Seriously, you can't cut that from the movie. That was an important part. And it's not like it adds length, because it's in the background!

If they can't figure out how to do the final battle in this movie, how do they expect to do the final battle in The Deathly Hallows?

^They probably cut the fight scene in this one because they didn't want any battles in the Deathly Hallows to come across as old hat, thus giving them more of a wow factor instead of creating a "big deal, seen it" feeling. I'm sure it's not because they couldn't figure it out.

They've also split up the last movie into two. So, they'll have a lot more time/money to spread out between the scenes. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire "second" Deathly Hallows movie is the Battle at Hogwarts.

David Yates doesn't exactly inspire much confidence but I do like that Kloves is back at writing the screenplay so I can withhold final judgment until I see it.

totally agreed. we were already wow'ed by the awesomeness that was the final battle in OotP. nothing really groundbreaking came out of the "final battle" in HBP, the main focus was on malfoy/snape/dumbledore/harry.

That's what I was thinking. More along the lines of how is it that we are getting 'new' information on this movie when people have been sitting on the completed product for months now. Seems like info on every aspect of the movie would already be available someplace.

sigh... After the reading the 7th book the movies don't disappoint me as much. I reached a limit where I just don't care anymore. The crappy ending of the book series makes the terrible screenplays meaningless.

Well, with these movies, I hated the first few because I kept comparing them to the books. "That's not the correct line." Or "It wasn't that character who did that." I mean, the whole having Seamus act like an idiot in the movies really got to me. So, I've realized that no movie will EVER be as good as the book, and just see if it's a good movie. At least with the Harry Potter movies, you get so much more out of them if you've read the book, I mean, there are so many little details in some of the movies that I can't imagine non-readers even picking up on their significance. I do hope this one is close though.

I am debating whether or not to see this one in IMAX this time. I did it for OOTP, but the 3D section gave me such a headache, I doubt I want to do that for this one.
