How about you guys stop gaying up the thread?

You only wish we were half the team that UT is or that Sid was half the coach Pearl is.....

Quote :
"it's more like nobody gives a flying fuck about tennessee here"

That's funny because there was a thread on here not too long ago and a bunch of people on here put UT as their #2 school.

You are crazy if you don't think this UT team can compete with Duke/UNC/Kansas/Memphis. Hell if they got a little more help from the officials last year they would have beat tOSU and possibly been in the championship game. Also the SEC is nearly as good as the ACC this year be honest. Plus the SEC has the last two national champs while the ACC hasn't had a Final Four team in those two years.

Both are solid teams, even if Memphis sets the term student-athlete back about 5 notches.

I said nearly. The ACC might be a little better at the top with 2 good teams but the SEC overall is nearly as good as this year's ACC. Vandy, Arkansas, MSU, Miss, Florida are right there with Clemson, Maryland, Wake, VT, NCSU.

Tennessee reminds me of Texas a couple of seasons back. (got thumped by Duke by 30 points in their own house). then there was '04- '05 Illinois (whose fans had HUGE heads at the time) ....lost to Carolina in the big dance

both very good teams but also VERY overhyped and failed to go on to bigger and better things after an exit in the tourney & loss of players to the draft. Yes Memphis is good too but CUSA is too soft. I see neither team advancing past the elite eight

How is Tennessee anything like that Texas or Illinois team? Texas and Illinois were teams built with multiple PGs and a big front line. Heck, Illinois made it to the National Championship game. Tennessee, much like Duke, is vulnerable against teams that can match up on the perimeter and beat them inside. If anything, you just gave the type of teams that will BEAT Tennessee.

I assumed he meant expectations/results, not playing style.

Although I would argue that both Texas and Illinois had higher preseason expectations than Tennessee did this year

^^^^ correct

Tennessee is pretty good this year but in college basketball a regular season record means squat once post season begins. Program success is largely measured in trips to the final 4 & National titles. We'll find out alot more about this Vols team after the Memphis game. The ACC is the conference to be reckoned with this year and the road to the title will almost definitely go through Duke or Carolina (maybe even a tenacious Maryland?) & i agree with whoever made the comparison to Wake winning the ACC in football. Although Florida has had its 2 recent titles, you'd be hardpressed to find someone outside the SEC base that would consider them a national power.

damn, Memphis has won 47 in a row at home...

and Hubert is talking about the exact reason why Tennessee will probably lose... Dorsey

and they have Tennessee being better in every category, about 6 points better overall, but give Memphis an 8-point home court advantage....

jesus christ, I don't know if I have ever seen tickets this insane for a regular season game. Aside from the ones mentioned above:

Quote :
"Memphis tickets to Saturday game against Tennessee - $6000
Reply to: sale-580067909@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-02-19, 10:30PM CST

GUARANTEED TICKETS AVAILABLE UNTIL FRIDAY. SECTION 229 ROW N SEAT 11-12."

Quote :
"#2 Tennesse vs. #1 Memphis - $750
Reply to: sale-579919135@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-02-19, 7:51PM CST

I have 2 tickets which are my season tickets located on the plaza baseline. Section 109 approximately 10 rows off the floor. If interested please hurry. I have been offered $1400 for the pair. If you can beat that they are yours! The tickets will get you in to all the pre game festivities as well. ESPN gameday is there starting at 10:00 am. There is also 2 different bands playing in the afternoon. This will be an event to remember! "

Quote :
"UM vs UT 4 Tickets and Parking Pass!!!!! Sec 107 Row E - $6000
Reply to: sale-579671286@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-02-19, 4:06PM CST

I have 4 tickets to the Memphis Tigers VS UT Vols on Sat Feb 23rd. Sec 107 Row E and a parking pass. I am asking $6000.00 for 4 tickets and a parking pass"

Quote :
"Saturday (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET): Tennessee at MempHis (6). This is the biggie. They're ranked 1-2 in the polls (MempHis, followed by Tennessee). They're ranked 1-2 in the RPI (Tennessee, followed by MempHis). Quite simply, it's the largest game of the season and the largest game in the history of a football-first state.

The rivalry between orange and blue has really heated up since Bruce Pearl swaggered into Knoxville and offered a competing megawatt personality (and winning percentage) to John Calipari's. But the social gap goes way beyond recent times. MempHis is almost an island republic on the state's western edge, whereas the state university nearly 400 miles to the east is in a wholly different place geographically and culturally.

You'll find a lot more orange in MempHis than you'll find blue in Knoxville. Saturday night, you'll find the biggest (and potentially best, if both teams live up to their on-court styles) game of the season.

Feb. 26 (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET): Tennessee at Vanderbilt (7). This one screams "trap game" so loudly that it's audible in Tibet. The Volunteers go from the GOY in MempHis to Nashville for another rivalry game. They'll play in one of the toughest gyms in America, Vandy's Memorial Gym, against a Commodores team that has regrouped impressively. The Dores have won five straight, including consecutive home wins over Kentucky (by a whopping 41 points) and defending national champion Florida (by a skinny three points), after losing four of five.

If the Vols win both games -- and the unofficial state championship -- consider it the greatest week in program history. And consider them strong national title contenders. "

It would be so fucking funny if Tennessee lost to Auburn, then beat Memphis... no idea what they would be ranked after that
