well then let me clear it up for you all

i was not trying to tell him to act christian, its fine for people to stand up for what they believe but going out of your way and being rude is not.

whether u think it was being rude or not, others believed u were.

and until u get every person in the thread to say they disagreed with me, your just as wrong as i am in implying that some people did agree with me

I usually try to avoid mentioning I'm an atheist if I'm not asked IRL

I don't like talking about my religious positions most of the time. but i've said it before... I do feel genuinely awkward when people say 'bless you' or especially 'god bless you' when i sneeze.

I don't like people to ask me to pray for them. I feel its odd practice to go around asking god for favors for other people.

The term "god bless you" implies something about someone else that you don't know to be true, it's just likely to be true. It's a little presumptuous.

Like someone said... "God will find a way" and "God works in mysterious ways" are the types of phrases that are the most uncomfortable, and I really would appreciate it if you didn't say them to me. I also don't like to be asked to pray for something, when I feel that even if i were a christian, I wouldn't want to do it.

I don't see the big deal with the guy saying "I don't pray, but best wishes"

what really pissed me off was the guy who said "I'm not going to pray for him [because he is an animal]" Don't reply then if you aren't even going to say that you wish him well.

I'm a Christian, btw.

And the right thing to do is complicitly lie and say "yeah, I'll pray for you" even when he won't?

You have a really weird sense of truth for a Christian. When the truth isn't "the right thing," then I don't know what is.

He didn't even give you a lecture on how you should get rid of your religion altogether (as some Christians would try to convert atheists), yet you went off on him anyway. Nice work.

datman:

in the comment that this thread is referring to, didn't the person say "i don't pray" and not "i am an atheist, so i don't pray"? didn't the person leave out their religious affiliation?

regardless, your response to them and this thread is superfluous and rudely unnecessary. we live in a country where we're free to express our viewpoints on the subject and if someone asks you to pray for something, it's perfectly acceptable to decline but still wish it well.

hell if i'm going to say i'll pray for you/your grandma/your dog if i don't pray otherwise. that's stupid.

and if i did pray, i would pray for someone's dog b/c if that dog dies it would cause pain/grief/suffering to the owner...and i would not want that to happen. therefore by praying for the dog's recovery you may help the owner avoid the pain of loss.

duuurrrrr not that hard to figure out

the entire thing is just stupid

im not going to be mean to someone or rude to them unless i feel they are doing the same.

yes i had a problem with both of them, not because im a christian but its about how he did it.

if it was a discussion like this, i have no problem with someone saying, i dont believe in it.
the only thing i objected to was, there was no reason for him to be an ass and go out of his way to say i dont pray

it wasnt a discussion about him or his beliefs, if he doesnt pray, y join in and be the odd man out.
its like going to a church just to see whats going on, and then when its time to pray, you say fuck that.

u dont do that

like ur mom always said, if u have nothing nice to say, stfu

you're the one who put him in an awkward place to begin with by bringing up religion

then you rail against him for wishing you well

I'm gonna put this in religious terms for a second, so you understand this: Jesus Christ, you're a douchebag.

yea, i did put him in that position but he opened the door

ill admit its my fault for the whole view, nonetheless, some people take offense to the fact that things are said when not needed

such as this thread, many of you took offense to it and tried to rail me

i tried to rail him because i took offense

Chembob shouldn't have even responded in that thread, but from a theological stand he's correct. According to most christian theologians (you'd be hard pressed to find one that disagreed) animals do not have souls.

yea, thats him asking for prayers

doesnt mean u have to say fuck you i dont pray or say ok

you can ignore it, be an ass, or say ok

as far as christianity goes and animals, id have to say your right

but not all christians believe the same thing
there are many different groups of christians with different beliefs and id say most of christians dont believe everything that their group believes in. like my grandma goes to a baptist church but didnt realize they believe in some things. if you categorized her, she would be actually a mormon

like i said, believe what you want, i dont give a shit
just dont be an ass to others

but ur missing the fact that it was rude and out of the way for him to say i dont pray. if he doesnt pray, y say that

yea im sure he didnt think anything of it but thats beside the point

i may make a joke about woman and some girl takes a huge offense to it and im just like, im sry i didnt think anything of it. its still rude because i didnt consider she would take offense to it

i dont care if you say im retarded, im smarter than a lot of you
but just as dumb as others

my intelligence is not on trial here

whats being discussed is whether or not it was rude of him to go out of his way to say i dont pray
when it was never a discussion whether he did or what his religion was. he voluntarily came in and made an ass move. if i cant bust him for doing that, you cant say shit to me about making this thread

i dont have to justify my bitching at him about, with this thread im justifying that regardless of your beliefs on religion, there are a time and place for discussing them and you should still try and be nice and not act like a total douche bag, which he did and then subsequently i did

Because he doesn't pray! Imagine! He said something relevant to what was said in the first place, in response to asking for prayers!

No, the entire point is that he meant no harm, only good will and you crucified him. Surely you don't think you should be held accountable for (what you see as) a mistake in speaking if you only meant well.

"This might seem like a dumb question....but does this nice Baptist boy realize you're wiccan or what it even means to be wiccan?? I think its hilarious that you're using the fact that he is baptist as an excuse not to go to a Catholic church, but he seems to be ok with the whole wiccan thing."

This is what happens when I go play FFXII for three hours.
Yes, my boyfriend knows and accepts that I'm Wiccan. He, honestly, doesn't attend Baptist church outside of holidays, and even then, rarely. But, he finds personal comfort in his faith, and I can't fault him for it, just like he knows my faith brings me comfort. And, since neither one of us has a problem with how the other expresses our faith, it's not really a problem.
But my family has been Catholic for generations, and even though a good number of my personal generation of the family are veering away from that, we play nice around grandma, not because she wouldn't like it, but because she honestly wouldn't get it. A couple of those of marrying age have married to outside faiths, but none have said, "I'm not Catholic any more."
Like my Mom. She has little to no faith, because of growing up in Catholic schools, and her hard sciences background makes her blow off most of the Catholic doctrine as ridiculous. But, when she visits, she takes the one hour of preaching to make sure her parents are happy.

On the topic of religion, perhaps someone that knows more about the topic can answer a question about the Church of Satan... so since Satan is an actual Christian figure and stuff, does Satanism actually count as a form of Christianity? Are Satanists just like "Yeah I believe God and Jesus exists, but I like Satan better" ?
