^^lonnie chisenhall appartently had some off-field issues that scared a lot of teams away from him. Hopefully he works out for the indians

yeah he's never been consistent...i watched him pitch in Charlotte a few weeks ago when he was on a AAA rehab stint...he gave up back to back homers one inning, while retiring the side in another...inconsistent

and last night against the Indians he got rocked for 8 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings

has he had lots of rehab stints? i dont remember him having a bunch of injuries before he fucked his leg up a couple months ago, but i only kept up with that since he was pitching locally

I'm just saying it's silly to harp on the guy for pitching like shit when he's been injured all year.

200+ IP, 150-170 SO, sub-league average ERA the past three years. He was bad last year but not awful. He's a pretty consistent pitcher.

his K:BB ratio has been about the only consistent thing about him...IP just means he's healthy and still in the league

career stats

14-6 3.30 ERA good season
10-11 4.02 ERA average at best season
22-10 2.63 ERA great season
12-12 3.87 ERA average at best season
10-15 5.17 ERA bad season

i wouldnt call that consistent

You're counting win-loss record as a measure of consistency? C'mon, man.

ERA+: 127, 102, 151, 112, 83
He was below the league average ERA every season before 2007.

You need to readjust your qualifications of "good" and "average" seasons for starting pitchers. Most GMs would kill for a pitcher that could put up those numbers over five seasons, let alone a pitcher who was doing it at ages 21-25. Good starting pitching is hard to come by; a guy that can be above average for 200+ innings for five straight seasons is a godsend.

Never understood the ERA+ statistic

I'm assuming 100 is the league average and anything above that is better than average

Probably a better indicator of success than just raw ERA alone

ok his first season was a great season, not a good season

but the 10-11 and 12-12 seasons with ~4 eras are still average

Win-loss records are about as indicative of a good season as shoe size. Raw ERAs aren't much better.

raw ERA doesnt really have anything to do with run support so how is that not a good stat?

i know you have a man crush on dontrelle though, so i'll lay off him

Because ERA is highly dependent on the defense behind the pitcher. The Braves pitching staff in the early 90s was great, but was perceived to be other-worldly because they had the best defense in the NL behind them. The Braves pitching staff for the last 10 years has been undervalued because of the generally lousy defense behind them.

Probably the best way to evaluate a pitcher (both in the long and short terms) is by subtracting the defense. There are a lot of ways to that, read these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_independent_pitching_statistics and http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=878

And I don't have a man crush on Willis, I'm just defending his record against stupid comments.

I think this is the first time I've watched a full outing from Volquez. The Reds are going to be scary good in a few years if they can get rid of Dusty Baker.

The Rays are ESPN's new team. It kinda sucks that the shoe is on the other foot now.

Can Orel Hersheiser be any more terrible of an analyst?

LOL... I thought it might take another season or two, but hell, I'll go ahead and be correct now (probably not). I'm waiting for David Price to be the best #3 in baseball in about a month or two. Move Sonnanstine or Jackson to the pen and this might just be your wild card or AL East champs.

No they aren't. They are the worst run organization in baseball. They CAN compete but they won't even spend money on pitchers for ONE YEAR! They have no pitching outside of Kazmir to speak of. They won't sign but 1 or 2 players longterm (Baldelli being one) and rarely hold players through their arbitration years. If they didn't deal with a braindead GM in 2004 they'd have literally NO pitching.

Until they actually trade for some pitching and sign a real pitcher they are going nowhere. They sure ain't showing any signs of being able to do that trading Hendrickson for Seo (who has SUCKED as a starter this year).

Jason Bay to the Rays for 22 year old SS Reid Brignac and former first round pick P Jeff Neimann...

This makes the Rays the team to beat in the AL East to me...

V lol... yeah, they are going to trade Manny to their biggest rivals.

wonder who its for

depending on who its for, the Dodgers would probably have to be the new favorites in the West, especially since the West sucks

hahah i wonder if LA somehow unloaded Andruw Jones in the deal

Heard rumors Bay went to LA first so my complete guess is

Red Sox get: Bay
Pirates get: LA prospects (Loney/Ethier/Kemp and LaRoche?)
Dodgers get: ManRam

on ESPN too.

Well this sure as hell mixes the league up this year. Griffey to Chi-town, Manny to L.A., Bay to Boston, Pudge to NY, C.C. to the Brew Crew and a lot of little movements should really make this a wild finish.

I hope Kruk is in rare form tonight.

On a somewhat related note, the producer for the X-files is a huge Dodger fan. He named the Scully woman after Vin Scully.

BTW, it looks like LA is where former Red Sox heroes go to die, geez.

So Manny will play Left, Pierre will play Center, but I doubt Andruw Jones will play Right. Guessing Jones will just fill-in?
