I love it. I still need to let a couple of the songs that just got released grow on me, but all in all I think it's their most solid effort in a long time (and I'm a fan of everything they've put out, even St. Anger)
For the haters to come:
You've been saying for years that Metallica has sucked or gone in the wrong direction since Master of Puppets, or since Justice, or since the Black Album...so after 15-20 they have finally listened to you and gone the direction you want....so what do you complain about? It sounds like they TRIED to rock out old school but it's not the same, or it sounds like too mixed with other stuff, or Hetfield's voice isn't the same...It's 2008, it's been 20 years of musical influence since then, and they're 44 years old now. Did you expect a twin album to the last one you loved? 9/12/2008 3:06:42 PM |

I'd say so far my favorite songs are Broken Beat and Scarred, My Apocolypse, The Judas Kiss, and believe it or not, The Unforgiven III

I never do this. Once I get pissed at a band, they are blacklisted forever. GNR, Nickelback, Creed. Fuck 'em. But, what I heard tonight was incredible. I am annoyed that you picked possibly the worst track to debut on the radio, but you made up for it. You reminded us that you are, in fact, Metallica, and you do own this bitch, and none of us would be here without you. Lars. James. It's cool. I forgive you. We can be friends again. 9/13/2008 3:46:41 AM |

Nickelback and Creed? When did they piss you off? When they first formed and started to come out with music? 'Cause that's when they pissed me off.
Yeah, they probably did pick the weakest song to debut. I thought the instrumental song was pretty weak and I just can't get around thinking of STP's Creep when I hear Unforgiven III. Other than that the album is pretty good. Definitely better than St. Anger and Reload. 9/13/2008 9:57:09 AM |

HUGE step up from st. anger which I liked 0 songs from, still doesnt do much for me despite a handful of songs being decent. :/ i think its more that, despite some of the songs being good (and some of their best guitarwork in a longtime) its still been done better by themselves before.
production is absolutely terrible, flat, and nonorganic too which didnt help me at all but Im not going to blame that all on them.

haha, looks like im not the only one that thinks the recording/mixing/mastering on this sounds absolutely horrendous. He pretty much says exactly what I thought when listening and what I stated earlier. It has no dynamics.

Quote : | "Analysis: Metallica's Death Magnetic Sounds Better in Guitar Hero By Eliot Van Buskirk September 16, 2008 | 11:17:32 AM
According to Wales-based MusicRadar guitar editor Chris Vinnecombe, Metallica's new Death Magnetic album has a serious sonic problem: it has been compressed (in the audio sense of the word, not the file size sense) just about as much as it's possible to compress audio.
Part of the "loudness war," this type of compression is designed to make music sound as loud as possible at the expense of dynamic range (the difference between loud and softer sounds). Television advertisers use similar technology to get the most bang for their buck volume-wise, which is why ads often sound so much louder than television programs.
However, according to Vinnicombe, the problem goes beyond compression. He says some parts are actually distorted from digital clipping, explaining, "the kick and snare drum seemed to be audibly clipping, along with some of the palm-muted guitar parts."
Vinnicombe's audio analysis (pictured to the above right), using the free, open-source audio editor Audacity (one of my favorite applications of all time), demonstrates graphically the severe nature of the audio compression used by Metallica's engineers for the CD version of the album by comparing it to a recording from the Guitar Hero videogame. This version of Death Magnetic, featuring extended solos from James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, became available within the game on Friday as an $18 download.
According to his analysis, which looks solid, audiophiles would be better off recording the songs from the videogame than buying the album because the Guitar Hero version has far more dynamic range than the hyper-compressed CD version.
Vinnicombe spotted a comment by oneway23 on a Metallica forum that appears to contain a note he or she received from head engineer Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound, the company that mastered the album.
"I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction," read the note, "I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case, the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here.
"Believe me I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."
If this is true [note* im not trying to pass this as complete fact*], and Jensen (whom the Death Magnetic liner notes identify as having mastered the album) received the mix in such a compressed form, it looks like the engineers who mixed the album before it was sent to the mastering facility -- identified by Vinnicombe as Greg Fidelman and Andrew Scheps -- are to blame.
So far, 2,730 fans have signed a petition asking that the album be re-mixed (as opposed to remixed) and/or remastered. Failing that, someone will eventually record themselves playing the song perfectly within the game and distribute it via bit torrent, and then Metallica's label will have another thing to get upset about." |

^They had some terrible quality mp3s on their website as a pre-release. They later updated it, but it really did hurt my ears to listen to it. The album wasn't quite as bad, but it's still entirely too loud.
I got a copy of the FLAC files from GH3. MUCH better sounding than the CD and the MP3s they made available on their website. 9/19/2008 1:35:34 AM |

They're getting old, dude
You can't play that kind of shit forever. There's a reason they haven't aged as well as bands like Iron Maiden. Their old shit took a ridiculous amount of stamina to play.
I used to play drums all the time and playing even one of those old songs used to nearly wind me. I can't imagine playing an entire concert of that shit, or even attempting it in my 40s.9/19/2008 10:31:10 AM |

A funny thing about the new album, there's no profanity. Literally none.
Funny how with St. Anger they were saying "look guys, we are hardcore again, listen to how many times we say the F word!"
Now, it's "Look guys, we are hardcore again, we are actually playing thrash metal!" 9/25/2008 12:42:41 AM |
