i'd rather see michigan st vs george mason as a 12/5 matchup than notre dame and george mason as a 12/5 matchup

Davidson/Gonzaga will be a good one.

so will butler/ south Alabama. its in Birmingham and that is a ripe 10 seed upset.

temple/Michigan state too. tough call.

^ i don't know, i think both games are really good tough open rounders. ND will not get off easy there.

That is messed up VT got snubbed. I guess if they had beat Carolina yesterday they would have been harder to leave out.

^^they would have to

Miami beat 1 of 2 games and beat VT 1 of 2 games, lost to unc, lost to clemson

VT beat Miami in the tournament, lost to UNC twice, lost to duke...but had a better conference record...

^ It's not a balanced schedule, so comparing conference records doesn't mean much when you have 16 games and a 12-team conference.

turn it to CBS/ESPN/ESPN News/ESPNU and you'll hear every analyst they have talking about Arizona State and their snubbing

I'm laughing my ass off at Dick Vitale. He's telling Bob Knight to go back coaching at Indiana with Vitale as head recruiter and Digger Phelps as director of basketball operations, and Knight has got this priceless look on his face with his chin sitting on his fist of "You're crazy and shut the heck up!"

haha wow i love how 2 of the ESPN guys think its all 1 seeds in the Final Four and the 2 others talking right now think its 3 out of the 4 in the Final Four

How many times has all 4 one seeds made it to the Final Four? i know its not many times

I think Vitale is closer to being right though I don't think UNC wins it all

What I really really really don't get is how Butler was ranked #10 at the end of the season, wins their conference tournament, and then gets stuck with a 7 seed? I'd think that the 4 seven seeds would be about the 25th to the 28th best teams in the nation, with maybe a +/- 1 seed for some wiggle room. To me it totally makes sense that the #1-4 teams should get a #1 seed, the #5-8 teams should get a #2 seed, etc. That would put Butler as a solid #3 seed. I just cannot fathom why they are a #7 seed.

I am not really a Butler fan at all, so I am not trying to argue their merits either way. However their only losses were a 1 point and a 4 point loss to the runner up teams in their conference and a 7 point loss to another ranked team. Does that imply that the people making the polls all year long are complete idiots and Butler is not even a top 25 team, much less a #10? Or are the people on the selection committee just that stupid?

All four #1 seeds have never made it to the Final Four. In fact only three times has their ever been a Final Four with three #1 seeds (1993, 1997, 1999).

The people on the selection committee are just that stupid.

It's upset fucking central this year. I think one #1 seed makes it to the FF (Memphis or UCLA).

they've always said they dont look at conferences as whole

they just look at who you've played and who you've beat

if that makes sense

That's entirely untrue:

Villanova beat 4 Top 50 RPI teams
WVU beat 3 Top 50 RPI teams

Really those are the only teams from the Big East that you can call "on the bubble" but just for kicks

ND beat 5 Top 50 RPI teams (and 8 top 55 RPI teams)
UConn beat 7 Top 50 RPI teams
Marquette beat 4 Top 50 RPI teams
Pitt beat 6 Top 50 RPI teams
etc, etc

Now look at the ACC "bubble teams"

Miami beat 3 Top 50 RPI teams
VT beat 1 Top 50 RPI team
Maryland beat 1 Top 50 RPI team

[Edited on March 18, 2008 at 7:04 PM. Reason : and anyway, the crappy bottom of the BE is represented in the RPI ranking of each team]

They just showed some memorable moments of March Madness in a highlight as they came back to the play-in game. They had a couple of shots from the 83 game, like the players getting on top of the goal, and of course the Jimmy V running around. It made me sad, b/c we aren't in the tournament. We are hosting NCAA games and aren't even in the tourney. If I was Sid I would take those guys to some of the games and show them what they are missing. Maybe that would light a fire in them and make them determined to get back to the NCAAs.

^^^^ It is the #1 rated conference in the RPI but that is far from the whole story.

I would put it 3rd behind the Pac-10 and Big East personally...

About Va Tech... they had ample opportunity to beat a number of Top 50 RPI teams and only had ONE win, which was far less than any competing bubble team (for comparisons sake Arizona St had 5). That combined with BAD home losses to mid-major to low-major teams did them in.

There was no one else in the ACC that was a viable option to make the tourney with Maryland flaming out. I think the committee got it about right with the ACC...
