i dont ride my bike on hillsborough st to school because im afraid of how most of those people drive so agressively when they have to wait 30 seconds behind someone turning left. 4/25/2008 11:00:43 AM |

and to those who say that bicyclists add to congestion... do cars not add to congestion?? if people choose to ride bicycles, take 5 seconds out of your day to slow down and pass them carefully. and to those saying that bicycles deserve the grief because they don't obey all the traffic laws,,,, well there are thousands of motorists every day who don't obey the traffic laws: speeding, running redlights/stopsigns, etc.... just my two pence.4/25/2008 1:09:45 PM |

^ My big complaint was that they travel in the right lane well below the speed limit and bring traffic to a stand still. Cars can be ticketed for that. 4/25/2008 1:13:35 PM |

Understandably so, they can't always cruise at 35mph+. And its better than the left lane right? My point is it slows down your commute at most 60 seconds. People will always be in a hurry to get from A to B, but just a little patience can go a long way. I ride and drive, and have been frustrated on both ends, but in the end I realize that a bicyclist is just trying to have less of an ecological footprint and get some exercise.
Ticketing is hardly objective to begin with. 4/25/2008 1:17:55 PM |

I read the original post. Driving preference maybe, I dont always slow down more than 5 mph, typically I just adjust my speed, switch lanes if possible. Same as I would if a slow car was in front of me, or making a turn. I dont get furious about my fuel economy because cars are going to make a left or right turn in my lane. 4/25/2008 1:25:00 PM |

Of course, I just started this after getting stuck behind 10 cars who were stuck behind a guy on a bicycle and no one could get over because of the fast heavy traffic in the left lane. If there isn't much traffic then there isn't really a problem. 4/25/2008 1:27:43 PM |

Isn't it more dangerous to change lanes than to stay in the same one for your entire commute? How are you affecting the safety of car drivers behind you who all change lanes because you are going 25 in a 45?4/25/2008 1:36:24 PM |

Sure, changing lanes is more dangerous than staying in one lane.
But this is about fuel economy. 4/25/2008 1:38:12 PM |

I would think the effect of slowing for a little bit behind a bike would be negligible compared to stop lights and stop signs. 4/25/2008 1:44:37 PM |

^^ True, but when you multiply it by the number of cars that you're forcing to slow down and speed up the figure goes up considerably. 4/25/2008 2:00:01 PM |

"It's aggravating at times, but I certainly respect their right to travel however they wish.
I made this thread after getting stuck behind 12 cars on Hillsborough who were all stuck behind a guy on a bike who was oblivious to what was going on. It made me question the environmental benefits of biking and disrupting traffic flow. I think that the Hillsborough street revitalization should definitely include some infrastructure for this, such as dedicated bike lanes"
Not oblivious: He was living what he thought were the last moments of his life knowing that there were assholes like the one that started this thread 5 cars behind waiting to toss a CD at him. 4/25/2008 8:38:16 PM |

This started with an honest question about fuel economy.
So fuck yourself. 4/25/2008 10:39:49 PM |
