Quote : | "Yes, we whites get downright pissed off when you call our country and culture racist. " |
yes we do, because its ignorant and generally stupid to try and label 174,000,000 people with a broad brush
any intelligent person knows that every race has good people and bad people...there are racist whites, blacks, asians, hispanics, arabs, etc...there are also whites, blacks, asians, hispanics, arabs, etc, who are NOT racist
so why must you say "white America is racist" or something like that? It makes you look like an idiot just like if you said "blacks are racists" or "asians are racist"]3/21/2008 2:07:52 PM |

Perhaps American culture would be more accurate.
Does that mean all American whites are bad people?
Of course not.
But this country was founded on systematic racism. It's not something we can ignore, however much we might want to.
It's not merely an individual problem.
(Also, I'm white. I feel more comfortable making generalizations about my own race.)

it wouldnt be more accurate...it would actually be accurate, unlike saying "white America is racist"
and the systematic racism this country that helped build this country isnt systematically in place anymore...nobody can ignore that slavery used to be legal in this country and helped build up this country...but thats not how it is in 2008...oh you might get a few racist looks from people here and there...that wont ever change in ANY country...but no minority nowadays has to sit in the back of the bus or use a separate water fountain or anything like that...pointing to the past shit that people did 150 years ago has nothing to do with how i choose to live my life nowadays

Obama's Faulkner quotation is perfect: "The past isn't dead. It isn't even past."

It's not a troll if it's true.
Besides that, you never post anything substantive in Soap Box, all you do is cry like a little bitch.
This is entire thread is composed of you crying and people laughing at you, which I am sure is very similar to your everyday life. That would explain your uncontrollable and unfounded anger.
This thread was meant by you to point out some Bush racist tendencies against Obama through the violation of accessing his passport when every Presidential candidate has had their information illegally accessed.
It's almost as if you read the headlines, get angry, never read the whole story, and then come in here acting like a little girl. 3/21/2008 3:33:47 PM |

Ok, here's my position. You obviously have some pretty serious reading comprehension problems which led you to believe that somehow Bush allowed access to Obama's passport information, which is probably trivial information, and ignored the fact that both McCain's and Clinton's were also accessed. Either that or you are so delusional and paranoid that you believe that the whole world is out to get you, in which case, you should contact a pyschiatrist immediately and try to deal with your self esteem problems.
I suppose that you are so paranoid that you believe that McCain's passport being accessed was part of an elaborate cover up operation to find out what countries Obama has visited. It coudn't have been some bored contract workers just looking people up at work, right?3/21/2008 3:54:04 PM |

So funny. Heh.
A black man finally runs for president and has a decent chance of winning, and his passport file is compromised. Is anybody surprised?" |
Everyone's (major presidential candidates) passport files were compromised. What does his race have to do with it? Your unwillingness to understand facts shores up my belief that you are in need of some therapy.
Your initial post is in itself racist. I recommend that you get out and try to make friends once in a while. If you were to try it, you would find that it's hard to hate someone because of their skin color.3/21/2008 4:01:33 PM |

Oh, I suspect there are a number of living American blacks and Asians who suffered similar treatment. I do think this is a major reason why McCain got a pass. However, what if the situation were reversed? Imagine, sometime in the future, an Arab American who was tortured by white US soldiers is running for the top office. Would you feel comfortable if he noted how much he hated the crackers?3/21/2008 7:28:06 PM |

Exactly
shit, I'm pulling for Clinton over Obama, and not even because I really support her any more than him--just because at the moment, I think she would be easier for McCain to beat. Furthermore, the longer the Democrats fight it out, the better for McCain.
Quote : | "Oh, I suspect there are a number of living American blacks and Asians who suffered similar treatment. " |
WHAAAAAAAAAT?
and I think he gets a pass because he clarified that statement to specifiy just his enemies and captors in Vietnam (whether or not he's sincere, who knows, but he doesn't really strike me as a racist). Fuck, he has an adopted daughter from Bangladesh.
Quote : | "So basically no one can hire a black person or woman ever without you claiming affirmative action... you're the racist one... you claim that they COULDN'T have gotten to where they are through their merits. " |
yep.
Quote : | "Oh they're there for their merits, but also because they're blacks with specific views. " |
ok, like he just said--you're claiming that they couldn't have gotten to where they are through their merits...they needed "unofficial" affirmative action.

Look--he's by no means my political idol (although I do like to listen to him speak when he's delivering a serious political message and not simply stumping for his wife), but I've LONG thought that Bill Clinton was grossly overly maligned. Yeah, I disagree with him on a lot of things, but we could've had it much, much worse with a Democratic President. Relatively speaking, he was very moderate, and a brilliant leader.3/21/2008 7:55:54 PM |

You don't think there are American blacks and Asians who've been tortured by whites? Maybe none who had the exact same experience, but it's hard to rate and compare severe trauma. Older blacks, especially, could have been subject to considerable abuse from whites. The American military has maimed countless Asians. I suspect some of these victims are still alive and now citizens.

It's not as simple as that. I certainly don't think he's a conscious white supremacist or anything similar. However, he doesn't seem to realize how offense his comments were. The details of his apology particularly bother me. Follow the link for a breakdown of the problems:
http://www.aamovement.net/viewpoints/2006/mccain1.html
Combined with his initial remarks, I'd say McCain believes it's fine to use racial slurs to insult bad people. Indeed, he apparently would rather use a racial slur than profanity. Imagine if he had used the racial slur for blacks instead. Would anyone consider that less offensive than even a string of obscenities?

After all these threads, you're still clinging to this line?
Do you not realize that white people, considering they are the majority group, as well as the majority in power, have a far bigger influence from their racism than other groups? And on top of that, have a long, dark history of using racism to influence laws and policies and gov. programs.
Also, you're ignorant or delusional if you don't think the past has an affect on the present or future. Barack Obama put it well in his speech:
Quote : | " As William Faulkner once wrote, "The past isn't dead and buried. In fact, it isn't even past." We do not need to recite here the history of racial injustice in this country. But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow.
Segregated schools were, and are, inferior schools; we still haven't fixed them, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today's black and white students.
Legalized discrimination - where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from unions, or the police force, or fire departments - meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between black and white, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persists in so many of today's urban and rural communities.
A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family, contributed to the erosion of black families - a problem that welfare policies for many years may have worsened. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods - parks for kids to play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pick-up and building code enforcement - all helped create a cycle of violence, blight and neglect that continue to haunt us.
