hell of a night A's....

i just hate the d-bags put in lyon when they were down 10-1 only to give up a bomb to mark ellis. killed my fantasy team ERA, but the A's got a big win against a NL contender so whatever.....

I know its early.... but:

despite playing great baseball, hopes of catching the Angels keep getting dimmer. They just keep winning these 3-2 games - taking a page right out of the classic A's handbook! Ya gotta figure they will just get better as the season progresses and that run differential will rise.

Looks like we are fighting Tampa, Minnesota, and the Yanks for a Wild Card. I really do think Tampa and NY will beat each other up and Minn will fizzle out. This is the best shot we got for the playoffs at this point- if we can get to 15-25 games above .500!

If only Harden would stay healthy, he is a top 5 MLB pitcher....really is sad he cannot sustain it.

^ .....and over two weeks after that comment Beane agrees with you and trades him.

I was upset when he traded Hud, Mulder, and Haren - but all of those (except Hudson) were better for our end than the other team. Right now, I gotta say the Harden trade looks more like the Hudson trade - but only time will tell.... In Beane we trust

Also how about the job he did nabbing Michel Inoa from the rich$$$ teams? A true artisan of business!

how does it feel to cheer for a team when you know the owner cares a lot more about money than winning?

You tell me... you could have had one of the top emerging young pitchers in the game but decided to ask for Philip Humber instead, because he didn't have as big a contract (and the "big contract" is $1M per for the next 2 years)...

I know it'd be rediculously expensive, but what if they still had:

1. Hudson (9-6, 3.19)
2. Harden (5-1, 2.34)
3. Haren (8-5, 2.83)
4. Duchsherer (10-5, 1.78)
5. Mulder

Throw Zito in the 'pen, with Street closing. That'd be a staff you wouldn't want to face. Damn free agency.

^^^i'm not saying we're not fiscally responsible (cheap)...we have one of the richest owners in the league...and also if the A's really did only care about money, you'd think when they last made the playoffs they would actually sell upper deck seats...but it seems like every 2 years they have some stud pitcher and they get rid of him...kudos on the Zito deal though, they sure did sucker the Giants on that one

yeah for draft picks

That was just the giants being dumbasses (and the mets almost being dumbasses), not anything genius the A's did

[Edited on July 9, 2008 at 4:28 PM. Reason : also the A's had Aaron Harang, but they didn't trade him for money reasons]

All valid comments we A's fans wrestle with... but I suggest reading Moneyball. That explains alot about who Beane is and how he came to revolutionize Business Management for MLB. He is now revolutionizing the farm system process, but I imagine that book wont be written for many years to come....

Just wait until Cisco park is finished, (even though they should technically be the Fremont or Silicon Valley A's when they move outtof the ghetto and into the $$$$) 0- then he will have the money to keep all these great players that come up through the A's system...
http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/oak/ballpark/new/index.jsp

But the most important part of it is the system itself that Beane has built - which continues to produce top talent from its farms. If the players you lose to free agency end up getting record setting contracts, then that is further testament to the system that created them. That system is what A's fans are proud of...

Not a bad start for Gallagher at all....
S Gallagher (W, 1-0) 7IP 2H 2ER 3BB 7K's 96Svs.57B 2.57ERA

Also Murton had 2 RBIs and an amazing catch in left field.... He does need some work on his plate discipline though. Both are in the right place now , IMO to rebuild themselves...

But you're never going to win a world series trading away players when they need a new contract. Might make the playoffs occasionally, but eventually you have to pay a couple of those really good players to stay with the young guys to be really really good. I guess all he cares about is being good enough to keep making money though.
