Thats the tough thing about CO2 and climate change. The carbon dioxide doesn't just disappear. At least not for a few millenia. Methane and some other greenhouse gases interact with the atmosphere and / or fall back to Earth in a few years. Increases in carbon dioxide persist for thousands of years because the gas is inert. Even if we slash carbon dioxide emissions, the damage has already been done, and we just have to wait and see how much of a hit we take.
That said, climate change is something that we can adapt to. A lot of other species will be fucked, but it's nothing that will prevent mankind from surviving and continuing to procreate. And I wouldn't be surprised if global dimming via reflective aerosols is used as a way of combating global warming in the near future. Just like there are greenhouse gases, there are also gases that reflect sunlight back into space. Using them to dim the amount of sunlight that hits the earth would counter the radiative forcing effects of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.4/17/2008 3:06:35 AM |

a supervolcano (like the one in yellowstone) erupting and radically changing the world climate
nah i don't think that will end mankind, but it will happen and will kill millions 4/17/2008 1:54:05 PM |

if the supervolcano at yellowstone went off there is a good chance humanity may not survive it 4/17/2008 1:58:40 PM |
