That thing is a beast. Too long to jump any waves that you'll encounter on inland waters and incapable of spinning or sliding in any way. They are reliable though and the touring seat is hella comfortable if it has that option (the super plush three level seat.) They have plenty of power for pulling the toob or a wakeboarder and they don't get jerked around as much by the person you're pulling as the smaller skis do.7/15/2008 10:10:24 AM |

^^it's got a beast of a motor to match its size though. the 1200 motivates it pretty well. sure, you won't be carving coves up and launching wakes, but you can to a certain extent. then you've also got the added comfort and size, which is a big advantage if you plan to use the board and tube much. also, you don't want a ski that slides around in turns. cut a sponson in and go. a ski that spins so easily is fun to play on sometimes. my raider 760 is like that, it'll just lose it's shit in a full high speed turn and slide/spin like it was on ice.
ha, yeah i've been going with shark bite recently but latino gang sounds good.

Best wave/wake jumper in the WORLD! I had a 700 in it with a riva pipe. Super racey and it would spin on a dime if you just leaned forward in a turn. It was such a good ski. To many problems with it now 7/15/2008 10:48:29 AM |

You can easily fit one fatass and two skinny chicks. Axe me how I know.
^ One of my friends had a VXR like that back in the day. It was a fun ski, but it sat so low and the motor was a little forward for my tastes. He also had a WaveRaider like the one BBR is talking about. That was a really nice riding ski for the most part, but something was severely fucked up with the hull or sponsons. I don't know if it was just his ski or a design flaw, but I had that thing running full speed several times and it would randomly turn 90 degrees and stop on a dime after hitting a small chop. Trust me when I say something was severely fucked up and it wasn't rider error. Getting thrown unexpectedly at ~60MPH sucks. After the third time it happened to me I told him that thing was a piece of shit and he'd be better off letting it slip off the trailer on I-95.

HAHAHA exactly! it's a flaw. mine has whooped my ass more times than i can count and sent me swimming hundreds of feet to get it cursing the whole way. it sure did really teach me how to ride/control one though, i think i'm a better rider for having it as my first ski. i just love watching first time/inexperienced riders on it. first time they get brave and hit a little chop or a wake at some speed BAM major wipeout. 7/17/2008 3:35:05 AM |

i've heard the GP1300R will do that shit if you don't change out the stock intake grate.
For having such a nasty reputation, I never ONCE got bucked off of my Ultra 150 (except with my friend's mom trying to climb on the back and nearly tipping it over). I came close a few times when jumping waves/wakes, but always managed to hang on.

^^^^^^it happens a lot more often than you'd think or probably hear about, especially in coastal areas with rentals. there's usually at least one pwc related death per year down around the area i ride most of the time. usually it's a result of people hauling ass towards another craft, pier, or channel marker/buoy. in an effort to maneuver around or away from whatever it is, instinct/panic tells them to let off the throttle. obviously this renders the steering useless. just like people who stand on their brakes locking the wheels up in a vehicle and wonder why it doesn't turn.
there must be an adverse affect i'm missing, but i've always wondered why manufacturers don't incorporate some sort of fin/rudder onto the bottom of the nozzle to aid in some sort of control when you back out of the throttle. similar to what's on the lower unit of a outboard/stern drive. or, even an aftermarket piece that could be installed by clamping it around the nozzle for rental companies, inexperienced riders, etc.
there's also the limited cases where people die as a result of being tossed from the pwc and hitting something/losing consciousness and drowning. even just tumbling across the water at 50mph+ can ring your bell a little.

It seems like the rudder might be useful for steering in case you've lost power, but I haven't been on a ski/waverunner/whateverthehellyouwanttocallit of any kind since I was about 10 years old. I don't know how often you would possibly loose power or how effective a tiny rudder would even be. I remember having a lot of fun though and I remember people riding their skis up onto beaches in their back yards instead of onto a trailer. That always seemed stupid to me, since you're probably packing lots of debris into the impeller.

The unidentified 44-year-old man and his wife were riding personal watercrafts near the Rolling View Recreational Area at the Wake-Durham county line at about 11:30 a.m. when he lost control in a turn, said Sgt. Tim Sasser of the state Wildlife Resources Commission.
The man fell off into the water and might have struck his head on the back of the craft, Sasser said, noting the man was wearing a life jacket and the proper safety equipment at the time of the accident." |

I don't know how you could hit your head on the back of the ski. I'm still skeptical about that part. Usually when someone loses control in a turn the ski stops and the person gets thrown hard. I guess this is an example of how people can pass away from a PWC accident though.8/22/2008 2:32:47 PM |

there's a GP1200 I can buy for $2700 with a trailer. it has 65 hours, and is in good shape except for the paint being worn in a spot on the side where it rubbed against a dock.

sounds like my Ultra 150 when I bought it (although I tested it in the water, noticed the problem, and got it for cheap enough that it was still a good deal).
I'm afraid the values will have gone back up by the time I get back from Iraq. I might roll the dice and buy one from over here, anyway (either eBay, craigslist, or from greenhulk.net)...just have someone back in NC pick it up for me.
I mean, I'm seeing GP1300Rs for $3500-4000, and 1200s for $1500-2500, all advertised as good skis (on greenhulk.net, where they aren't likely to be able to scam anyone, anyway).
