^mistreatment of animals is important to some people man. If you can't get with that, fine, but some people see that as a very real problem. It's not the plague, but it's a problem nonetheless.

I understand the power of markets and money

while it may still be around, what does that prove? nothing.

slavery is still around (cause the money's good)

child prostitution is still around (again, cause the money's good)

even when prohibited, people will still race horses -- but at least they'll know they're wrong

I'm the kind of left-winger who is supposed to get upset about animal cruelty and stuff like that.

But I really like horse racing.

And veal.

And it is probably cruel, but I just don't give a fuck.

i'll bet 392 would tie himself to a tree if a timber company was going to chop it down

he'd probably take it a step further and murder the loggers since trees are more important than people (trees are even more important than horses!)

i'll bet 392 also thinks horses have souls

(and people on TWW say I smoke too much weed

you see?

you keep assuming things based on your bigotry and prejudice

I never said anything about trees

do you actually think putting words in someones mouth, then refuting those words accomplishes anything?

human rights? I think people are just saying that you shouldn't mistreat animals. Big difference. The kentucky derby serves no purpose other than people getting drunk, gambling and wearing stupid hats.

once again, that's why it's useless to argue because you don't get it.

i dont know how any rational person can read through 392's posts and think he's not going overboard

he isn't simply saying "animals shouldnt be mistreated" which i dont disagree with at all

he's saying humans and horses and animals are all equal and should have equal rights...yet its my reality thats out of touch?

he compares horse racing to slavery and dog fighting

but its MY reality thats out of touch for saying theres a lot more important shit going on than horseracing? if you think so i can only assume yes, you're trolling, so fuck off, i'm done

where did he say that humans and animals should have equal rights? If he did, I didn't see that I don't agree. But, at the same time, besides dogs and cats, we don't really give a fuck about animals and that's wrong.

I don't even know the guy, but from what I've read, I sure agree with him on much more than everyone else in this thread who doesn't see anything wrong with animal cruelty.

(unless its dogs of course, then people care)

and, once again, you're putting words in people's mouths (aka trolling). Show me where I said the world doesn't have any bigger problems than horse racing. I didn't. Is mistreatment of animals a problem? Yes. That's all I'm saying.

its not such a hard life.......they are athletes

they wake up, go workout, come back get a shower and a rubdown

then they get a tasty meal of pellets, and molasses, and alfalfa hay and then they get to snooze for the rest of the day.... till their next tasty meal and maybe another rubdown.

maybe some hydrotherapy for a joint or something, or maybe some acupuncture.

OR they could be running around on the farm waiting to step in a gopher hole and snap off a leg... cuz that shit happens too out there.

sports injuries arent new to sports..............newsflash

but humans can and do have the physiological ability to lay around in a bed for months at a time

horses...do not have that ability so their sports injuries just happen to be catastrophic at times... doesnt make it cruel.

so bob the horse can snap a leg or two off anywhere, the farm, the track, the wild......it happens and bob is either given the pink juice, or gets eaten by a mountain lion.. either way poor bob im sure if bob had his druthers he'd rather just go to sleep peacefully than die screaming whilst being eaten by a mountain lion

dude, don't try and act like you weren't talking to me at all, okay.

also, I see what he's saying and I don't think he's saying we should have ALL equal rights. But he's saying that they should be able to live as they be, and not be forced to run until their ankles break. (forced being the key word)

and for what? so people can gamble?

you have people who like animals and nature...like me...you...most people probably

then you have militant people who love animals and nature more than humans...people like 392...PETA...the Unibomber

its really not hard to tell the difference

i figured when 392 compared horseracing to slavery and dog fighting that would clue in most people that he is taking it too far...when he said pigeons have a "right to pursue happiness" i figured most people would realize he is taking it too far

did you miss that thread? the one about the laws of killing pigeons in colorado? oh yeah i'm drawing off his comments in there too...its in The Lounge

I just wonder how somebody like that would've survived back in the day...like when there werent cars and people had to ride horses to get great distances...would he refuse to ride a horse since its cruel? i thought it was sad that they had to put Eight Belles down after she broke her ankles...but it was also to put her out of her misery

i just think 392 is going way overboard...and it appears most people agree

its apparent you have very little practical experience with horses

you do not force a horse to do anything it doesnt want to do

id like to see you try though

you will get hurt.....really badly if you do

One of the very few accurate comments being made so far. People that think horse racing is pure evil don't know anything about horse racing. Do you think people race their horses because they want them to get injured? So much painstaking care is put into protecting your horse from any possible disaster, but you still get freak accidents. PETA charging the jockey is an absolute joke. Horses are delicate animals, they run and hurt themselves all the time. Several famous horses have died just slipping on grass in their paddock in the past few years.
That being said there are 2 changes about the racing industry that could make a difference:
1) Stop breeding to unsound horses.
Eight Belles' sire Unbridled Song is from a well known line of racehorses that have suffered career ending injuries. Breed to fragile horses; you'll get fragile horses.
2) Get rid of 2 year old racing (this will never happen I'm sure)
Horses are young and still developing at this age--that's a lot of stress on young bones. Eight Belles was a whopping 17 hands (very freakishly tall). Racing a horse whose bones are growing like weeds so young just adds fuel to the fire.

so the "then fighting them" part was irrelevant? i shouldnt even take into consideration that one animal is running, and the other is fighting to the death?

your comparison of horse racing to dog fighting is pretty telling though...that you're an idiot
