Well this is why after seeing shit hit the fan down the stretch of the primaries for Obama, superdelegates will realize who is the more electable candidate in a general election.
Its time to realize that Obama won't be going up against Hillary in the general election and if Hillary is nominated, she won't be going up against Obama so the fact that obama is slightly winning is pretty moot considering Hillary has all the swing states.5/13/2008 10:33:58 PM |

Quote : | "As a former Marketing major, I'm going to sum it up for you:
1) Old. 2) Old. 3) Old. 4) Old. 5) Old.
Old ideas. Old appearance. Old guard.
McCain is old.
As the Presidential advertising campaign develops into one of contrasting brands by the political duopoly, the sheer contrast between the two men on this simple metric shatters McCain's chances. Between voter perceptions of the economy, foreign policy, and their interplay; anything voters perceive as old won't inspire.
I think the historic influx of enthusiastic young voters (disenchanted Ron Paul Republicans, and OMFBama fans alike) turns a tight election away from McCain based on the weight of this contrast. The general election 2008, IMHO, will resemble a hybrid of 1992 and 1996.
The dramatic influx of campaign staff and voters from the younger bracket will resemble 1992 with similar results for the Democratic Party. The role of Ross Perot will be played by the Silent Conservatives who prefer neither Obama nor present-day McCain, but Ron Paul, or more likely, John McCain v2000. In our 2008 election, I expect this voting bloc will merge with the apathetic majority who form a larger potential voting bloc than either political party: eligible, non-participants.
The 1996 reprisal stems from a Democratic branding effort like the Clinton campaign's portrayal of Bob Dole as "old and moldy" in 1996. As time goes on, and this contrast registers and compounds, John McCain simply won't be able to out-inspire his younger rival. Bill Clinton taught Bob Dole this in 1996. Petty disputes over the minutiae of legislative proposals that have exactly zero chance of being passed (and nobody reads) may provide high brow infotainment, but don't strongly influence the broader vote.
Yes, this is my 2008 election call.
Barack Obama wins in a tight one.
To look for: After brokering a deal for Hillary Clinton's campaign and fundraising machine in exchange for her role as Secretary of State in his administration, not Vice President, Barack chooses a white man, perhaps even John Edwards, to take the Vice President slot at the Democratic Convention.

Polls show both Obama and Clinton knocking off McCain in the generals. I don't see how anyone could expect otherwise with the turnout the Dems have seen in the primaries. 5/14/2008 10:12:43 AM |

i'm not at all surprised that democrats prefer the democrat and republicans prefer the republican...
that's why we have political parties....
when you show me a shit load of republicans that vote for the democrat then you'll have a valid argument...
but in NC a shit load of democrats have voted for the republican since the 60s

LivinProof78 All American 49373 Posts user info edit post |
how can you talk about the majority of america in the primaries?
unless you are in an open state you HAVE to vote in your registered political party primary....and there are more registered democrats than republicans...so that would suggest that the majority of the country prefers the democrat...but when the majority HAVE to vote for a democrat then that's exactly what happens....
you still haven't made a point
in 2004 ~47% of all registered voters were democrats and ~33% were republicans and GWB still got re-elected....

I think Wolfood98 is in there somewhere.
Anyway, this statement made me laugh:
Quote : | "Campaigns are ultimately about the qualities of candidates" |
No sir, campaigns are about how a particular politician is marketed by his campaign. The Obama campaign has done a MASTERFUL job of marketing their product and by all appearances will continue to do the same in the general election. Hell, he is already campaigning in states where the primaries have already been held.
Neither HRC nor John McCain has matched their level of precision, efficiency, enthusiasm, or strategic brilliance. It doesn't help that their product is shiny and new in a country where novelty and youth are practically worshiped.
Contested campaigns usually rest on turnout. Obama will simply turn out more voters in November and will defeat John McCain on sheer energy.
There are only 2 real ways that I see the Democrats screwing this one up: 1) Superdelegates nominate HRC instead of Obama. 2) Obama picks a disastrous VP (unlikely) while McCain picks a superb one.
A terrorist attack might also work in the GOPs favor however. John McCain is likely to look resolute in the face of an attack while Obama will take a more nuanced position (or appear obviously uncomfortable attempting to take a strong position), thereby appearing weak in the face of danger.
Barring any of these unlikely events, we will have our first black president in January. Personally I think many of Obama's domestic policies are disastrous, but I give him credit for being more introspective than any candidate in recent memory and, quite frankly, speaking to voters as intelligent individuals, instead of just feeding them mildly condescending sound-bites.]5/14/2008 12:12:07 PM |
