I guess this guy judged me based on my impoverished hipster appearance
but he fucked up

cause I'm a good tipper and I still have money left

besides its not his job to judge people's character its his job to take my god damn order
and he wasn't around to do that

while the woman waiting the table next to us was awesome (and took our dessert order)

First, link or it didn't happen. Second, he would have then lost his job for carrying so much cash on him, and for resisting an assailant.
News flash: If you fight off a robber, as a delivery driver, YOU GET FIRED for putting yourself at risk.

I did this at los tres a couple days ago. But I didn't want to look like a jew, so I ordered a 36 oz beer and some cheese dip while my girlfriend ate. And mine turned out being more expensive

Funny thing is that people don't realize that their reputation for being a shitty tipper follows them everywhere.

I'm pretty open about telling who is a good tipper and who is a bad tipper. And although someone might not start hating you just because they hear you're a bad tipper, it definitely lessens their perception of you a decent amount.

i consider tipping at 20% being a good tipper. people can get all high and mighty about their tipping if they want, but the general principle is that if they do everything that they're supposed to then you tip them everything you're "supposed to" i.e. 20%. if your service is poor you deduct accordingly, but don't go too low or you're clearly just being a dick, unless the waiter had absolutely no concern for your general well being and experience while they were serving you. Tipping more than 20% is just absurd. you're welcome to do it, but it doesn't make you a better person than anyone else, it just makes you stupid and in need of things to make you feel more self-righteous. If people have a concern with that then they can choose another industry in which to work. they're there by choice, and they know the rules.

Oh, it's because other than handing us the food we paid for, they don't include any other services.
Well the same is true for to go orders at restaurants. If I take food to go, i'm not in the need of further services such as drinks, refills, ranch runs, more napkins because i spilled my drink, more refills, etc.
Those things I pay for with my tip. (unless I don't get those things, in which case I won't pay for them.)"

Nobody said it makes you a better person...it just has to do with your priorities. If you want service "above and beyond" and certain perks...then tip more. If you could care less...then tip normal. Nobody is trying to be "high and mighty."

I feel like that's pretty common, although it doesn't seem right considering that servers usually do more catering to the customer than bartenders. But I have two theories that I use to explain it:

1) In the overall scheme of things, bartenders do more work. Their shifts are usually longer, and when a bartender is slammed for several hours, he/she does as much work as a server does in several shifts combined. So when someone sees a bartender running behind the bar like a chicken with their head cut off, then tend to give them a little extra.

But I think the following is probably the correct theory:

2) There is more opportunity to really get "taken care of" at a bar. Getting served before other people, getting free drinks, etc. So bar patrons tend to tip more so that they are treated better at a bar in a more social setting where their "getting taken care of" also tends to get noticed more.

If you do the bare minimum amount of service (refill my drink when it gets empty, bring my food out, and are polite) you'll get the standard 15% tip. If you're friendly, my drink never even gets to empty, and you make my meal generally more pleasant than it would have been with another server (you make excellent menu recommendations or the like) then you'll get more than that, usually in the 20-50% range. If my food is free and you hang a boobie out for me I'm probably tipping over 100% of what the bill should have been.

If you pull what Snewf's guy did and ignore me you can expect jack shit and perhaps a note letting you know that a) I'll never come here again nor will I ever recommend the establishment and b) if you don't want to deal with the job requirements of being a waiter perhaps you should seek employment in another field because this won't be the last time it happens to you.

Yeah, it sucks when you provide good service and don't get tipped, but there are also plenty of times people overtip for basic service so deal with it. It's the nature of the beast when you rely on the fickle, stupid public for a portion of your pay.

I hate that I can't even mention the idea of tipping to someone who doesn't, cause if they called the store saying i said anything about their tip negatively towards them, I don't have a job anymore. Hell i'm not even supposed to tell someone what a good tip is if they ask.

But mostly this is how i feel, if you don't wanna fucking tip me go pick it up you pieces of shit, if you can spend fucking $35 bucks on pizza you can throw another 5 on there. Hell with a lot of people that my store regularly delivers to it doesn't matter if we get there in 20min or 45min its still a shitty ass tip, i mean what the fuck a dollar on a $20 order is never a good tip.

If we are late fine, I understand why you would be pissed but what most people don't realize when its late it isn't the drivers fault. We get the pizza when its ready and go, but on Friday and Saturday nights it could be close to 20 mins before its ready, and then its fucking 530pm with traffic, I can't get there any faster.

I really wish our delivery charge, charged based on how far way you are, then we wouldn't have to worry about tips unless they wanted to add more. There are some places that we have to go to that take 45mins there and back, and some how people think 2 bucks is gonna cover it?

I've definitely started tipping less on pizza delivery since every place now charges a delivery fee. If that's not going strictly to the driver then you should bitch to your management and not about the customers. If I'm already paying $1.50 just to have it delivered I'm not going to tip as much. I used to tip about 25% for pizza delivery, but now I only tip 10-15% based on how much the delivery charge was.

i'll get some delivery steaks or chinese food sometimes and the guys bring it pretty quick cause i'll usually give them like an $8 tip on a $25 order

partially to establish a relationship and hopefully get prompt service in the future, but also cause gas prices are a bitch

^^ yea we get i think $1.15 maybe its more now, but I feel that if I walk out of the store averaging $4+ total from the delivery charge and a tip ill be happy.

The thing that I do like about the delivery charge is that at least i make something each time. But there are what to many people that think a dollar or two is enough for any delivery. I mean to me it doesn't matter if its 10 bucks or 30 bucks at least give us $3. Just because you only order one pizza doesn't mean I'm using less gas

Once again this thread was about Old People and if anyone else notices they don't tip. Not an entitlement thread.

I will agree though, I think a lot of people don't realize all the work they do. For example I bartend and have no barbacks. People simply see me pour beer. They don't realize, I have to clean the whole place up before I open and after I close, lug heavy kegs up two flights of stairs, clean all the glass, clean the bar as people use it, and also dump out ashtrays (all by myself).

I hear about a dude who would put a stack of ones on the table as soon as he sat down.

He'd tell the waitress: "For every time you mess up, my drink is not filled, etc. I'm taking a dollar away"

Bet that gives waitresses good incentive to not piss you off.

Bullshit. If you clean it when you close you wouldn't need to clean it again before you open unless people are in there overnight while you're closed.

But I see what you're saying. I tip the shit out of bartenders.

Its not so much cleaning when you get in there (although there is usually a little dusting and wiping to do before you open up), but the other prepping. I'd always show up an hour to an hour and a half before my bar shift to clean and prep, and anywhere from an hour to two hours after we closed down to clean up and re-stock.

fired for carrying cash to make change with - you're an idiot.

resisting - well that's just protecting his livelihood.

shooting would-be robbers after being robbed 4 times previously? priceless.

^however many up

I once had a busboy spill damn near a whole tray of drinks from a dirty table on my back at the bar at Champps. He apologized and got me a towel. The manager never apologized, let alone even came over to see what happened.

After about 10 minutes (it wasn't busy at all), I walked to the middle of the dining room and interupted him speaking with another employee. He offered to find me one of the promotional shirts they had. I told him that it would be great to change out of a soaked shirt. Ended up not having one, so he asked what he could do for us. I just told him to take care of us how he saw fit. Meal ended up free and we only paid for beer.

I hate when something like that happens and the management does nothing to rectify the situation.

I delivered for about a year a few years ago.

#1, the delivery charge is not for the drivers. The drivers made a per-run fee prior to the delivery charge. The charge was used by the companies to recoup some of their costs. When my store started charging for deliveries, we got an extra $0.15 from a $1.50 delivery charge. The drivers aren't making anything extra. In fact, they're making less since most people tip less when there's a delivery charge.

#2, Most corporate delivery places (i.e. Domino's, etc.) do not support drivers carrying any weapons whatsoever. For many, it's a fireable offense if you're caught with a damn pocket knife. It's complete and utter bullshit. Delivery drivers are some of the most at risk workers out there. When I worked, I concealed carried every day. I'd rather get fired than killed.

#3, having $180 on you doesn't mean shit. I routinely went on runs where I collected over $100 and frequently delivered big orders that were $250+.

#4, it can be damn good money if you get away from the colleges. A bad day for me was around $14/hour. A good day was more like $23. Yeah there was increased wear & tear but I still came out ahead. I always knew who was going to tip and who wasn't. If you gave me no tip or a shitty tip, you got pushed to the last of the line (sometimes 30 minutes AFTER I left the store). The worst were the people that gave you a fucking ziplock full of change or the fuckers that expected you to break a $100 bill for a $15 order and then complained when you only have $80.

As for me, I tip well. If you suck, I'm not going to give you shit. If you're slammed and you TRY to take care of me then I'll add some. I like being the first one that the bartender serves, the driver delivers to, or the waiter/waitress checks on. Plus, like someone said above, it's nice to make someone's day. I've been there and know how a 50-100% tip can make a fucked up day turn around.
