I agree that some of them are- but some are still pretty attractive. If you wear the ones with out rageously baggy pockets it just doesn't make sense. The slimmer pocket ones are nice- but they are fading out slowly. I wear them cause I haven't bought new shorts in 3 years. 6/18/2008 11:06:00 AM |

haha cargo jean pants. i had a pair of cargo pants in middle school that had 2 pockets on each side above the knees and 2 pockets above the ankles on each side. plus the normal side and back set of pockets. i lost stuff in those pants.
^^yeah i can't sit on my wallet either. too much shit in it. it goes in my right cargo pocket. keys in right pocket. cell phone in left pocket so it doesn't get scratched by the keys. book/weed/misc in my left cargo pocket.

my every day dress at work:
dress shirt (short-sleeved or long-sleeved with the ends rolled up), unbuttoned and not tucked in t-shirt (white or color-coordinated) cargo shorts (some variation of khaki/brown) chaco flipflops or chaco sandals, depending on whether or not i'm going to need to be walking around a lot
i love it...if i could, that would be the most formal i'd ever get at work...i tend to dress up a bit when i have meetings with people who make significantly more than me, but that's only one or two times a month
when i have court or a formal engagement, i'll dress much nicer

^^^^^ Though I must beg to differ. All I own are cargo shorts because they're the only ones with deep enough pockets that let me carry an insulin pump, diabetes testing supplies, and several things of fruit snacks (for low blood sugars) along with my wallet, phone, and keys. All the dressier shorts w/o cargo pockets don't have deep enough regular pockets, and they're designed with too slim a cut (so if you put anything in your pockets they bulge like hell).
The only alternative is a fanny pack (GOD NO) or a small backpack (which makes you look sketchy if you're in a store or something). 6/18/2008 2:39:12 PM |

^ See, those little bags are exactly what I'm trying to avoid wearing around. If I had to walk, say, two miles to somewhere and needed to carry some stuff with me I think those wouldn't be bad (because they weigh nothing and don't insulate as well as a normal backpack so you don't burn up), however if you saw me walking around wearing those in public (in a store, at the mall, at school), you would start muttering unkind things about me in the back of your mind. Given the stigma that I associate with them, I don't want to wear one, lol.
I'd really just prefer that somebody slim down the diabetic stuff I carry around with me so I could carry it in dress pants without looking like there's something weird going on in my pants. I need super concentrated sugar at an affordable price to deal with the low's instead of these bags o fruit snacks. 6/18/2008 2:45:36 PM |

Or I can just continue as I do now!
I draw hardly any attention to myself by wearing pants with deeper pockets to store all these damn fiddly medical things when I'm out and about. The only option left besides what I do now for me is for them to engineer this stuff a little better and make it a little smaller (which is doable).

Quote : | "and what the shit are you people talking about cargo shorts being out of style? they are the shit. i actually have places to put stuff. " |
thank you. Not to get into the topic of style but cargo shorts are still in style. Most clothing stores have a wide variety of them, and plain flat khaki shorts are boring as hell.
Quote : | "i felt like i had all kinds of rigging and hardware on me when i would wear cargo shorts" |
That's partly why i like them. I'm not a big fan of gym back packs because they take 2 hands to open and it takes too long to get stuff out of them. Plus i just don't want to wear a gym back pack around all day. If i'm walking to a friend's house, going to get some coffee, or out taking photos cargo shorts come in handy.
It's when i have too little stuff to justify a bookbag, but too much to fit in 2 small side pockets. I'm a big reader so if i'm walking to caribou/park to read a book i usually have the book in my cargo pocket. I also travel a lot and carrying a bookbag around is not always ideal. If you're only carrying a map/camera than cargo pants are really the only way to go if you don't want to carry a book bag. Cargo shorts are also great for camping/hiking because you have easy access to maps/compass/leatherman.
exofficio makes some nice cargo shorts:
They're nylon and work great for swimming/kayaking. Sometimes the only place i have to put a car key or compass while kayaking is in my zip cargo pocket.6/18/2008 3:32:17 PM |

See the exact same thing applies to regular flat khakis. It's just that cargo shorts have a use. If i'm hiking and i'm not carrying a pack cargo shorts are perfect for a map/compass. Or if i'm out photographing an event they're perfect for memory cards. I guess i just carry more shit than other people.
^plus flat khakis make me think "dumb frat boy who majored in drinking/mass comm" and who hasn't changed thier style since college. Atleast i'm sticking with the same style because of its function. Flat khakis have no function or purpose. (partial sarcasm, i have my share of flat khakis, but i rarely wear them because i'm always carrying something around).

But the majority of the time you aren't hiking. And, how big are your damn memory cards?
Funny, cargo shorts, unless being used in a functional capacity are far more juvenile.
