^this was the only thing that made the movie worth my time. I wouldn't say it would have been enough to deserve my money

The overly done (sometimes fake looking) violent deaths.

This made for at least a few laughs.

I forgot about the 1989 version. lol.
I was thinking about the 2004 version, which I thought was awesome, so can't wait to see this one then.

Got what I expected out of it, much better Punisher than the 2004 version. Probably could have been better if it had been made my Marvel, but still was a good action flick.

Effects of shit being shot/blowing up was cool.

First 1/3rd of the movie was too overly done on the violence part during which there was too little dialogue if any, of which was pretty bad acting. The movie got better in quality acting-wise as the movie went on though. I just think the movie was sometimes under-done and sometimes over-zealous. It seemed out of balance and inconsistent from the beginning compared to the end.

Again, shit being shot was pretty awesome.

Best LOL moment is when he fired a grenade or whatever at the guy jumping from roof to roof, blows him up and both of them look at the punisher like WTF?

Not sure what you expected. It is a Lionsgate film, which should clue you in that it isn't going to be the best script. Most of the major roles were filled by British actors because of the previous. If you went into this movie expecting anything but extreme amounts of violence you were deluding yourself. The acting wasn't bad, I think Ray Stevenson did a good job as The Punisher. The script/plot was weak of course, but I expected that.

Hopefully Marvel will take over making Punisher movies, but I wouldn't mind them keeping Stevenson.

Complete failure in execution.

I was expecting competent directing just to bang out a movie. You have to try to be this bad. I mean this is rare shit.

I don't get how people hate this movie. They finally properly portrayed the fucking Punisher. You people just weren't ready for the actual PUNISHER. No, he's not a hero. He's not a team player, and Nick wasn't waiting there for him at the end of the movie to hire him. The Punisher is a fucking monster who just happens to be on our side.
This movie rocked for a number of reasons:
1: The Punisher is not an alter ego, and this movie didn't try to make him into one. The Punisher makes no attempt to keep up the "Frank Castle" side of himself. Frank Castle = Punisher.
2: The Punisher kills everyone involved. There is no sparing of the "innocents." See Punisher snapping the Mob Wife's head at the table in the first fight scene.
2a: Female deaths. In addition to the Mob Wife, we had a semi-competent female cop in the house scene try to fight, and get skewered by a sword. Oh, look, female cops die in the line of duty, too. It wasn't misogynist, it was REAL.
3: The back story was told in a good 2 minutes, not taking up a lot of time (see 2004) Punisher's back story is not complicated. When Peter Parker gets bit by a radioactive spider and gains powers, that takes a bit of explanation. Punisher is an ex-military guy whose sanity went out for a walk one day and never came back. In, out, done.
4: Punisher gets shot by a no-name villain. When going through the hotel, Punisher fails to clear behind a door, and gets shot in the back, by someone who ISN'T a named villain. Had he shot Frank in the head, it would have been game over. It was a nice touch, I liked it.
5: Rocket
Launcher
Jumping
Punk.
Titus Pollo RULES.

i haven't seen it yet

but people who are saying "punisher should not be campy/over the top" have clearly not read anything where frank runs into superheroes

seriously, there is one frank vs wolverine book, from ennis' run (#17), where

A) frank buys a few minutes by shotgunning wolverine in the face, peeling his cap back daffy duck style, and then wolverine spends the rest of the issue trying to regrow his face

B) frank takes a baseball bat to wolverine's nutsack

C) frank and wolverine are interupted in their fight by an army of midgets. AN ARMY OF MIDGETS.

D) frank gets away by rolling wolverine as flat as possible with a steamroller

and in the followup fight in a wolverine issue a few months later, the basic punchline was that the Punisher was gay and jerks it to body building magazines (i'm totally not kidding)

those are just two issues i can think of off the top of my head

not every comic book movie needs to be erudite and polished

^^ add to that list the fact that they actually used a bunch of punisher characters- jigsaw, lbj, microchip, soap, 2004 had what, 1 other comic character?

and like you said, the fact that they didn't take half the fucking movie trying to explain how he becomes the punisher is great (just like the 89 version), i wish more comic movies would do this. people like to go see the comic book movies so they can see their beloved characters kicking ass, but usually the first half (or more) of the movie is them becoming the hero, then you get maybe one or 2 cool scenes towards the end of them kicking ass, then you have to wait for a sequel to actually get a full movie of what you want to see.

maybe I'm the only one, but the intros where it shows how they become who the are is totally necessary. The only movie where it was too long was the first Hulk, but even then it was enjoyable.

^i think that was his point. they touched on it enough to show the audience why he is what he is without devoting the first half of the movie to background/hero discovery ala Hulk, Spiderman, Punshier 04, Batman Begins, Ironman.

Guys.

I am not talking about how they are trying to portray the punisher. I dont give a damn if its like this movie or the 04 version.

The point is that this movie is directed, acted, written, shot, lighted, HORRIBLY.

I left when Jigsaw and his brother walked into that club and 30 fucking black gangters all raised guns at them. Really. They were all gathered facing the door when he came in. REALLY?

And the shot right before that was worse. DID YOU SEE WHAT HE WAS WEARING AND HOW HE WAS WALKING?!?!?!

Oh my god. Its everything. bad bad bad bad bad.

I seriously cannot comprehend how someone could actually like this movie. To actually come out of this thing and be like, "Well that was a good way to spend 7-10 dollars and 2.5 hours!"

Basically, movies like this hinder more movies of the same genre from being made.

i think the comic-book-movie genre is fine

seriously, there was an article last month with 80+ comic book movies that will be out by 2011

there are only 160 weeks until 2012, that means that right now we're scheduled, theoretically, to have a comic book movie every other weekend

theoretically, or course

most of those will go to dvd instead or get shelved

but at the end of the day, "War Zone" is not going to be why mark millar has to wait for his comic books to hit 11 or 12 issus to sell the movie rights...

Yeah, but I've always had a bit of trouble with Punisher's status--I mean, didn't Spider-Man and Daredevil lock him up before? In any event, Batman kicked Punisher's ass in the crossovers--just as it should be.

I also loved the one where Frank is fighting the Russian and Spider-Man shows up, so Frank uses him as a human shield and lets the Russian punch the crap out of him until he gets tired. hilarious

For me... they dug themselves a pretty large hole to climb out of with the first action scene. Spinning upside down on the chandelier? That and jigsaw reminded me of unfrozen caveman lawyer a bit too much... appearance and behavior.
