Do my eyes deceive me?

Has Ralph Stanley or the Stanley Brothers really gotten no mention in this thread?

You all fail.

For those of you in Raleigh tonight, got this in an e-mail from Pinecone today:

Quote :
"If you're a bluegrass musician or just a fan, tonight is your night! The bluegrass jam, which has been hosted for a long time by Dave Cauthorn at the Big Boss Tavern (formerly Horniblow's), is now hosted by Doug Pratt and Dave Hedrick, and it will now be held on the second and fourth Monday nights of each month beginning at 8 p.m. at the Six String Cafe, located at 1040 Buck Jones Road, beginning tonight. The Six String opened its doors in this new location on December 17, and David Sardinha graciously agreed to house the bluegrass jam when it needed a new home. Please head over tonight to enjoy the music and camaraderie found at an evening of bluegrass jamming. The jam welcomes players of all levels, as well as spectators to enjoy the music, and the food and drink!"

I enjoy Old Crow Medicine Show and Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, but they are a progressive spinoff of bluegrass.

LOL@bluegrass snobs in this thread. Bluegrass is really anti-snob music.

And that video of Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin on Letterman is one of my favorites.

Agreed, but this snobbery goes two ways. Bluegrass, like jazz, was born largely out of the need for the poor and disenfranchised to create their own entertainment and control the beauty of something in their lives. the influx of rich white kids looking to get into "roots" music can appear to some to be a selling out or a shallow interpretation of the deeper feeling behind the originals.

It is precisely the difference between visiting, say, Ecuador and raving about how great it is as a weathy white tourist and coming away with some Indigeno clothing and feeling like you connected with the "people" of Ecuador and truly having lived there your entire life.

Now, I'm not saying that progressive spinoffs of Bluegrass can't be good bands or are inherently inauthentic, but music is always a tension between the new spin and the original (which is really just a riff off something else).

^^^^ good stuff, I really need to get back into the new music scene. Eighteen months in lower Alabama effectively isolated me from anything of the sort.

maybe, I've kinda jumped in the thread late, but dont really plan to read the rest of it. It seems like the BLuegrass vs Americana vs Folk vs etc etc blah blah has been somewhat explained and people are just talking about artist similar to the avett brothers but not really . .. . . .. . .......... . .. .. . . . .. . . ..

its not really that hard of a music genre to explain or understand, but at the same time there are a lot of people that dont like to throw around labels and what not

IMO this is a perfect bluegrass song. Up-tempo, high skill solos, catchy lyrics. If only it was a bit longer.

My friend introduced me to Carolina Chocolate Drops and I love them! I've just begun listening to the bluegrass junction channel on sirius, it seems to be the only station to keep my interest during my commute. I highly recommend it if any of you are using sirius.

jk

^bluegrass junction is a fun station. XM subscribers (yes i know they are the same now, but this station is still XM only) have Folk Village, i think it's either 15 or 17, and it's a pretty good channel as well. They play a lot of slower stuff though, so you have to be in the mood for it more.

and if you want a mix of it all - bluegrass, american, alt. country, folk-rock then listen to the Loft.

LunaK and I were driving past the Birchmere in Alexandria last night and, lo and behold, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mtn Boys were playing. It turned out to be a phenomenal concert, even if the good Dr did forget the lyrics to a few songs

The man was rocking it out for an 87 year old and I was fortunate enough to speak with him briefly and get a CD signed. Good times for an accidental find

So, for those of you Bluegrass / Folk / New Folk / Americana / Alt. Country / Not-really-nameable-but-has-bluegrassy-instruments-in-it-but-don't-call-it-bluegrass fans I recommend to you the Blue Ridge Outdoors Trail Mix. Every month they post 12 - 20 free downloads of bands they've collected. Some are really good, most are enjoyable and I've only deleted one or two. Worth a listen for free. Most months have a theme, this one being the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival: http://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/blue-ridge-music/trail-mix/

Quote :
"Wade Mainer, 104, a show-stopping banjo player from North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains who was a vital link in the evolution of bluegrass music, died Sept. 12 at his home in Flint, Mich. He had congestive heart failure.

. . .

He goes to the absolute taproots of this music,” country music historian Charles Wolfe told the Charlotte Observer in 2003. “He took the oldest traditional songs and translated them into sounds that could be recognized as blues and modern country.”

Historically, Mr. Mainer’s musical technique was noteworthy, and he was said to have influenced a range of bluegrass performers including Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt.

Mr. Mainer picked the banjo with his thumb and index finger — creating a softer and less-syncopated approach than the three-fingered style later popularized by Scruggs and Don Reno. At the same time, Mr. Mainer heralded a distinct change from the drop-thumb style known as clawhammer.

. . .

As his style of music was overshadowed by newer forms of bluegrass and country, Mr. Mainer moved to Flint in the early 1950s to work full time in an auto plant. He returned to entertainment after his retirement and became a popular attraction at folk festivals.

In a 1986 concert at the National Museum of Natural History’s Baird Auditorium, Mr. Mainer drew praise for his dynamic musicianship in a program called “Living Legends of the Banjo.”

Reviewing the show for The Post, critic Joe Sasfy wrote that Mr. Mainer “was the showman, ending the set on his feet, dancing and playing the banjo behind his back.”

. . .

“What we was playin’ in the ’30s was true country music — no electric instruments, no copyrights,” he once said. “Something’d happen and someone’d write a song about it — nobody owned it, nobody’d know who wrote it. The music just told a story.” "

Check out some Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet.

Also, Trampled by Turtles is more of the new grass out there. Little faster tempo and pretty fun music.
